Not just in the lecture halls of Harrisburg University either. They’re making it happen from classrooms to boardrooms and from after-school clubs to overnight start-ups. Right here in Harrisburg, too. But also halfway around the world. So if you’re looking for a business strategy, here’s one: hire more geeks. They’re used to taking things apart just to put them back together. To see how things work. To find out how they can work better. And not just computers—but whole companies, too. Who says business can’t be broken down to a science? Not geeks. You see, re-engineering isn’t even our second nature. It’s our first. We know business solutions have many variables. Good thing we’re used to solving those. Through science and technology, we are changing the world. The business world especially. Geeks are jumping so far ahead of the curve they can’t even see it. And they’re not just real-world ready. They’re real-world working. Right now.

Business is all about investments. This is an easy one.

At Harrisburg University of Science and Technology, it’s about much more than a degree. At HU, it’s about majoring in a mission. It’s about ensuring the University’s core values are embedded in each major so we meet the needs of students, while supporting regional and global economics. This is why Harrisburg University is the region’s top educational, research, and economic development catalyst. It’s also why 92 percent of our students land jobs in their fields or are in graduate school within six months of graduation. Harrisburg University offers ten undergraduate degrees with a variety of concentrations in each program. All undergraduates must complete at least two internships before earning their degrees. And often, they land jobs with the same companies they interned with while attending HU. At Harrisburg University, the recipe for success involves world-class faculty, internships, research, business partnerships, and relevant majors. In this publication you will find out exactly why our majors are the key ingredient that opens doors for students and the economy.

Geospatial TechnologyThe U.S. Department of Labor has identified Geospatial Technology as among the most important emerging fields in the economy. And since Harrisburg University is one of only a handful of colleges to offer a B.S. in Geospatial Technology, our graduates are in high demand.

Geospatial Technology is a collective term that refers to technology that collects, stores, queries, analyzes, visualizes and presents information to consumers. Tools of the trade often include drones, cameras, global positioning instruments, and location-specific applications such as Google, Foursquare, Microsoft GeoLife, and Google Buzz.HU’s Geospatial Technology graduates are using Geospatial Technology to boost efficiency and performance for a wide range of industries, including the marketing, emergency management, environmental planning, geo-intelligence and security, risk assessment, urban planning and utilities management fields.

At HU, we are harnessing GIS tools that help logistics companies plan optimal delivery routes. Graduates of the program use geospatial data that allows insurance companies to assess risk and vulnerability. And the technology our students are employing helps the retail sector understand its customer base so it can provide more efficient services.

The public is consuming more and more place-based GIS-generated products. And access and awareness will stimulate an even greater demand for new GIS applications, which will drive innovation and push the technology into new markets.

This growth requires a well-trained workforce in the STEM fields, particularly in the field of Geospatial Technology. This makes HU’s Geospatial Technology program a critical part of sustaining future GIS contributions to industry and society.

The public is consuming more and more place-based GIS-generated products.

At Harrisburg University our Integrative Sciences program is an incubator for exploration and innovation that will continue to transform the economic landscape. By blending research, theory, and know-how, we produce graduates who are prepared to perceive, practice, and improve scientific processes and results for both the public and private sectors.

We start with the basics of biology, chemistry, and physics. Students then have the flexibility to concentrate on biology, chemistry, biological chemistry, environmental science and renewable energy, and forensics.

There is no doubt that scientific advances and technological change are the chief drivers of the economy. And the knowledge and skills Integrative Sciences majors develop at HU are the key to improving economic performance and social well-being.

Cybersecurity Operations and Management Online Program designed for professionally minded adults with IT experience and skills

The demand for Cybersecurity experts is so large that there are nearly 300,000 job openings in cybersecurity operations and management across the U.S. There are 84,500 open jobs in the industry in Pennsylvania and surrounding states alone. And as the technology we use in our daily lives becomes more sophisticated by the day, so do cyber risks that threaten these advances. This adds up to supply and demand. In fact, 1.5 million more cybersecurity professionals will be needed to fill the predicted global industry shortfall by 2020, according to Cyberseek.org (2016).

Our Cybersecurity Operations and Management program is aligned with the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) framework, a partnership between government, the private sector and academia that is focused on education training and workforce development; and led by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Our cybersecurity courses also align with the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Department of Homeland Security’s Center of Academia Excellence (CAE).

Cyber-Attacks become more complex by the day, and hackers are developing new onion-layered attacks while your business is busy fighting other ones. To stay ahead of the risk, you need deep cybersecurity expertise. To protect your IT infrastructure and operations, you need HU.

A significant body of research shows that nurses with baccalaureate level preparation are linked to better patient outcomes, including lower mortality and failure-to-rescue rates. And with the Institute of Medicine calling for 80 percent of the nursing workforce to hold at least a bachelor’s degree by 2020, moving to prepare nurses at this level has become a priority nationally. Based on responses from 576 schools of nursing, 54 percent of hospital and other healthcare settings require new hires to possess a bachelor’s degree in nursing, which reflects an increase of 6.6 percent since 2015. And 97.9 percent of employers have expressed a strong preference for Bachelor of Science Nursing program graduates.

HU established its Bachelor of Science program with these statistics in mind, and because BSN nurses are prized for their skills in critical thinking, leadership, case management and health promotion, and for their ability to practice across numerous inpatient and outpatient settings, according to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing.

The association, and HU, understands that education plays a significant role in knowledge and competencies of nurses and healthcare providers. And by partnering with local and state-wide healthcare organizations to provide a world-class RN to Bachelor of Science degree program, HU is producing clinicians who are ready to integrate clinical practice, scientific inquiry and creative thinking into healthcare organizations and beyond.
