CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
07
The Sri Lanka Association of Airline Representatives, was founded in
1993 as a platform to develop the aviation industry. Over the years the
internal stakeholders of the Association have driven explicit goals for
the development and the advancement of the industry.
The year in review has been unprecedented with the onset of the
Covid-19 pandemic. The Aviation and Travel industry was most
affected as a result of this with turbulence to be expected in the year
ahead.
Despite the pandemic SLAAR stepped up in ensuring the well-being of the industry. The
Association interacted with the relevant stakeholders such as CAASL, AASL and BAR in finding
common ground and direction who in turn amply supported us in all our endeavors.
The Sub-Committees related to Industry Affairs, Training, Public Relations and Social
Committee dispensed with their duties at regular intervals in order to continue the vibrancy of
the Association. This year too we conducted learning engagements, in collaboration with
Diplomatic Missions and on soft skills. We have always had positive feedback from the
attendees which assisted them in their career progression.
Keeping Social Responsibility in mind we initiated a CSR project to enrich lives of the less
privileged. I am confident the new committee will continue these initiatives. We held a
successful year end event with excellent participation from our members representing both
passenger and cargo airlines. We noticed an uptick in our social media platforms with regular
uploads from our member airlines as we optimized technology in the new normal.
Finally, I am grateful to my Executive Committee for the support rendered to me at all times.
They were endlessly committed and contributed in a consistently professional way. I wish to
place on record the our wishes to Capt. Themiya Abeywickrama, the newly appointed Director
General of Civil Aviation & Chief Executive Officer in his new remit. We assure him of our
support as an Association as he guides the destinies of CAASL. It is pertinent to acknowledge
the contribution of Mr. H M C Nimalsiri, the preceding DGCA for his guidance during his tenure
in office.
08
Today I step down as the Chairman of SLAAR with memories that will stay with me a lifetime.
The baton will be handed over to my esteemed colleague Ms. Thanuja Lankathilaka. SLAAR as
an Association respects gender equality and coaches the next generation for leadership roles
within the aviation community.
The volatile landscape in the pandemic has enforced a new outlook to the way we conduct
business. It is vital to adapt, collaborate and optimize strengths to face the challenges of the
pandemic while pushing boundaries in order that Aviation can endure and overcome for
resilient performance.
May I wish you and SLAAR, the very best!
Stay safe.

Speech by Chairman
Our chief guest this morning, Ms. Kasturi Wilson, Managing Director Hemas Logistics and
Maritime Cluster, Hemas Pharmaceuticals, Chairman Sri Lanka Tourism Bureau – Mr.
Kishu Gomez, Mr. Johanne Jayaratne – Chairman Sri Lanka Tourism Development
Authority, Mr. Rayhan Wannippa – Director Legal Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka and
Ishara Gunawardena, IATA President – Mr. Rizmi Reyal, Mr. Trevor Rajaratnam –
President, Travel Agents Association of Sri Lanka, Deputy Chairman Board of Airline
Representatives – Mr. Chandana De Silva, the senior Management team of Sri Lankan
Airlines, distinguished invitees, members of the head table and the Executive Committee
of The Sri Lanka Association of Airline Representatives.
As the incumbent Chairman of the Sri Lanka Association of Airline Representatives
(SLAAR), it gives me great pleasure in welcoming you to the 26 Annual General Meeting
today. Continuing the benchmark set by my predecessors the association continued to
play a vibrant role in the activities of the airline industry working closely with all
stakeholders for the betterment of the industry. SLAAR continued to engage with the
Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka on multiple occasions to sustain and stabilize our
core interest.
13
th
The implementation of the Civil Aviation Policy was a significant milestone and I would
like to place on record my sincere thanks to the civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka for
enabling the Act and our past Chairperson/Chairman who have lobbied on multiple
occasions to ensure the passage of this legislation. Similarly there were many
interactions between BAR and SLAAR on matters of importance in order to find
common ground on industry related matters.
We would like to continue this relationship with BAR going forward as we consider this
association complimenting partners. The highlight of the year was the increase in
frequency to Colombo by major online carriers and further having new airlines entering
the skies of Sri Lanka to augment the tourist arrivals.
Our commitment to maintain high standards and knowledge in the industry lead us to
conduct several high level training programs. The positive responses we received from
the participants and trainers was encouraging and I wish to assure you that we will
continue these efforts in the future. The revamping of the website
(www.slaarcmb.com) was a significant milestone giving the Association a strong global
presence. In a brief moment we will have the privilege of our chief guest launching this
website.
The Social Committee created a vibe in organizing the most talked about Christmas
party onboard Garton’s Ark. The year also ended on a positive note for SLAAR with a
healthy financial standing. It would be pertinent to mention the close follow up, the
committee made in ensuring we receive the money hitherto deposited with Pramuka
Bank. I would also like to place on record my appreciation to Sri Lankan airlines for
having granted us concessionary travel for our recent General Meeting in Thailand and
all those in our committee who supported me in this endeavor.
SLAAR has always stood for innovation and adaptability to changes and in the context I
am proud to mention the induction of the younger generation in to the Executive
Committee. This further enables succession planning and continuity of the functionality
of the Association. SLAAR was invited to participate in the Tourism Advisory Board
formulated to advise the Government on policy framework.
14
The setback of April 21 2019 had a drastic implication on our industry particularly.
While we share the pain of those who lost their lives in the tragic incident, the impact
on our businesses has been significant. Most airlines have reduced frequency or
suspended flights to Sri Lanka. Similarly new operators who had identified Sri Lanka for
online operations have decided to rethink strategy.
I would use this opportunity to urge the Government of Sri Lanka review the charges
levied by the authorities for foreign airlines operating to Sri Lanka. It was reassuring to
have our Prime Minister echo the same sentiments in order encourage more airlines
to operate to Sri Lanka and boost our tourism. As an island nation there is high
dependability on all airlines operating to Sri Lanka to bring in tourists. This will also
compliment the open skies policy adopted by the Government.
I wish to reassure this forum and in particular Mr. Kishu Gomez and Mr. Johann
Jayaratne that our Association through our foreign principals constantly promote Sri
Lanka. The above initiatives would not have been possible if not for the support I
received from my Deputy Chairperson – Thanuja Lankathilake, the immediate past
Chairperson Dushy Jayaweera, the Ex Officio members, Eustace Silva, Shaminda
Fernando, Ravi Widyalankara and Parveen Dassanayake, our sectary Sureeka Fernando,
our Treasurer Dumindu Amaratunga. May I also place on record my thanks to the entire
executive committee and our administrative secretary Sunethra for all the assistance
afforded to me.
Similarly to all those in the working groups for fulfilling the responsibilities entrusted
to them. As you are aware the members of SLAAR and the Executive Committee
function in an honorary capacity and despite their busy schedules were always there to
attend committee meetings as well as industry related meetings.
In conclusion to all you ladies and gentlemen for being present here this afternoon and
for your support as well.
I wish the new committee all success!
