As Chairman, I am very aware of the women in our community fighting personal battles that most will never understand; pregnant women, abandoned and homeless, looking for refuge as they face an uncertain future. For the thirty-ninth year, we have welcomed these frightened, yet courageous women into our home and walk beside them on their journey to motherhood and a future filled with hope and promise.

In 2020, as COVID-19 complicated life for all of us, the pandemic presented seemingly insurmountable challenges for pregnant women who were without a home in which to shelter. For them, the risk of infection from the virus was greatly increased and the ability to receive services was almost non-existent as many social service agencies closed or provided only virtual support. Homeless and having no internet or computer access, virtual support services were out of reach for these women. In 2020, Our Lady’s Inn was needed more than ever, and so we remained open and operating, serving as a haven from the storm of the pandemic.

We served seventy-eight (78) pregnant women and their ninety-one (91) children within our two maternity homes throughout the pandemic. Nineteen (19) babies were born to mothers while in residence. Under our roof they found safety, encouragement and nourishment for mind and body. They discovered hope for a brighter future - a future made even brighter with the opportunity for healing from past abuse and trauma. We served an additional sixty-two (62) mothers and their one-hundred twenty-seven (127) children in our post- residential Aftercare Program.

Fiscal Year 2020 ended with Our Lady’s Inn in a sound financial position. The Executive Management Team worked tirelessly to secure a broad base of funding resources while pivoting fund raising strategies within the new virtual environment. Front line staff remained committed to working throughout the pandemic to ensure the life-saving work of Our Lady’s Inn was carried out. We continue to grow our Endowment Fund to help secure our future.

Together, we work to carry out the life-saving mission of supporting pregnant, homeless women and their children and helping them to secure a hope-filled future.

Amanda came to Our Lady’s Inn in the early days of the pandemic; she was in her third trimester and set to deliver within a few months of her arrival. Due to the COVID protocols in place at the time, she quarantined in her room for two weeks-coming out to walk the grounds for fresh air, do laundry and pick up the meals prepared for her. She met one on one with her case manager in a socially distant setting-both wearing masks. Our Lady’s Inn provided Amanda with a tablet and internet access, so she was able to meet with her counselor and attended sober living support group meetings virtually.

After those days of quarantine and with no symptoms of the virus, Amanda entered the full life of the Inn. She attended in-house classes, joined another family in the dining room at mealtimes and gathered with other mothers after dinner to watch a movie, do a craft project or play a board game—all while following the sanitizing, social distancing, and masking protocols. As all other residents, she was not able to come and go from the Inn but was able to have a visit with a friend or family member once a week. The visits were held outside in a special visiting area and as required, were socially distant. As most people experienced during the stay-at-home mandates, days could get a bit long and tedious; but the staff made every effort to infuse fun activities and positivity into the life of the Inn.

She was transported to her weekly doctor appointments by Our Lady’s Inn staff and before long, gave birth to a healthy baby. Several months after giving birth, she secured employment and childcare. Our Lady’s Inn supported her with transportation to work, daycare and doctor appointments. She worked and saved her earnings; and by year end was able to move into her own apartment. Amanda is a loving and attentive mother and remains connected through the Aftercare Program.
