Sunday, June 25, 2017 - Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Today, we welcome to our 10:00 a.m. Mass, our Lackawanna Firefighters for their annual Mass. It is an honor to host this Mass each year for these folks who put their lives on the line to protect and serve our community. We also welcome Father Joseph Bayne, OFM Conv., the Erie Count Emergency Services Chaplain, and the Buffalo Fire Department Chaplain, who will be the celebrant for this Mass.
You will notice that we have some scaffolding in the Basilica. We are repairing the aftermath of a few leaks from the winter, most notably, the repair to the plaster and, then, the paintings in the St. Vincent de Paul Chapel. We received a grant from the Ralph Wilson Community Foundation for the repairs to this chapel. The other areas of the Basilica which are under scaffolding are mostly repairs to plaster which was damaged by winter leaks. Once the plaster is repaired and it has had a chance to dry, the repairs to the painting will take place. Thanks for your patience while we take care of these necessary repairs.
Last Sunday was the last Mass at which our parish choir will sing until the fall. I want to say a word of thanks to Mr. David Nease and all of the choir members for their dedication and for the beauty they bring to our liturgies through their singing. We will miss them while they are on summer break. We are fortunate to have this choir for our Sunday Noon Masses, and the two contemporary music groups which provide music for our 10:00 a.m. Sunday Masses. My thanks go out to all of them.
One last word on Upon This Rock. Anyone who has not yet contributed to the diocesan Upon This Rock capital campaign, will receive a letter from the diocesan office in the coming days (if they have not already), reminding them of the importance of this campaign for the future of the diocese – but more importantly, to remain them that this is the best way to give to this year’s Catholic Charities campaign. Your contribution to Catholic Charities for this year can be made through Upon This Rock. Any contribution marked Catholic Charities will go to Catholic Charities through the Upon This Rock Office. Contributions can be made any time in the next few weeks.
Mark your calendar for our Father Baker Day celebration on Sunday, July 30, at 12:00 p.m. This date marks Father Baker’s 81st Anniversary of death. Plan on joining us for the Mass and for the reception following.
And while you have your calendar out, mark the date for Pennies To Heaven, our one-day event on Sunday, August 6. Watch the bulletin for details in the coming weeks.
May Jesus bless you and Our Lady of Victory watch over you.
Father Paul
SUNDAY 06/25/17 OUR LADY OF VICTORY PAGE 1
Pray for the canonization of our founder, Venerable Nelson Baker
Sacrament of Baptism: Our Parish offers a special Pre-Baptism preparation program for parents who desire to share their faith with their children. Parents-to-be must attend this class prior to the birth of their child. Baptisms are usually scheduled two times each month. Call the Rectory to register for classes. Godparents must be Confirmed and practicing Catholics. Non-parishioners are required to have a Letter of Recommendation to serve as a sponsor.
Sacrament of Marriage:
To be married in the Basilica, you must be an active parishioner for at least 9 months prior to setting a date. Engaged couples should contact the pastor before making other wedding arrangements. Couples are required to attend a Pre-Cana Conference, or equivalent pre-marriage preparation program.
Letters of Recommendation:
Recommendations to act as sponsors for Baptism or Confirmation can be issued only to registered members of Our Lady of Victory Parish who have received the Sacrament of Confirmation, attend Mass and receive Holy Communion regularly, have their children attending a Catholic school or Religious Education class. If married, the marriage must be in conformity with the regulations of the Catholic Church.
Devotions:
Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament begins immediately after the 12:10 p.m. Mass in the Basilica on Fridays and concludes with Benediction at 5:00 p.m.
First Friday:
On the eve of the First Friday of each month there are confessions from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Mass is celebrated at 7:30 p.m. on First Friday.
Care of the Sick:
Please notify the rectory office for a visit to any family member who is sick, in the hospital or confined to home. Regular home Communion visits are usually on the First Friday of the month by a priest, deacon, or minister of the Eucharist.
Tours:
To schedule a tour of Our Lady of Victory Basilica, please contact Dianne Bosinski, Tours & Basilica Programs by email at [email protected] or by phone at (716) 828-9424.
Summary of the Readings Twelfth Sunday in
Ordinary Time
How do people find hope in the face of suffering and death? That is the question addressed by today’s scriptures. We hear of the suffering of Jeremiah and the psalmist. We hear of the death that “reigned from Adam to Moses” (Romans 5:14). We hear of the fears of the Twelve as Jesus sends them out into the world to preach and heal.
Through all this tribulation one message rings out loud and clear—“Do not be afraid!” The God who saved Jeremiah and the psalmist and Jesus is fully present to save us through the gracious gift of Jesus Christ. We have nothing and no one to fear. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Basilica Tour Guides Needed
We are looking for people who would like to volunteer to be a Tour Guide, especially for tours during the week. You don’t need teaching experience or a degree in public speaking, but if you are an energetic “people person” and someone who has a love of our church, all its beauty and the history behind it, please complete the form below and return it to the rectory or place it in the collection basket. Training is provided and you will shadow one of our more experienced Tour Guides until you are ready to give a tour on your own. As an added benefit, all Basilica volunteers are entitled to a discount in the OLV Gift Shop.
SUNDAY 06/25/17 OUR LADY OF VICTORY PAGE 3
From the Religious Education Office
High School Confirmation classes are scheduled to begin in July. Please contact the Religious Education office at 828-9437 if you have not already received the registration packet.
Adult Confirmation Classes
There are many adult Catholics who have not been Confirmed. Besides the fact that they have not been received into the full initiation of the Catholic faith, it becomes a problem when they want to serve as godparents/sponsors for Baptism/Confirmation. If you are a practicing adult Catholic (that is, go to Communion, and if married, married according to the rite of the Catholic Church) and have completed high school (high school students should be in our teen Confirmation program) consider attending the five catechism-review classes and receive the Sacrament of Confirmation from Bishop Richard Malone on September 19. The five classes begin on Thursday, August 17, from 7:00 to 8:15 p.m. in the lower Basilica Marian Room and continue for the four following Thursdays: August 24, and 31, September 7, and 14. Please register by calling or meeting with Father Romulus (828-9425).
Fantasy Island Family Picnic
Don’t forget this year’s Annual Family Picnic at Fantasy Island. Sponsored by the Children’s Liturgy Community, the picnic will take place on Sunday, July 9, from 11:30 a.m. till 8:00 p.m. The cost this year is $22 per person. Children 2 years and under and our parish Altar Servers are free. Altar server family members are welcome at the fees stated above. All are welcome to attend the picnic, not just those who participate in our Children’s Liturgies. The cost is all inclusive - food, games, prizes, rides and water park. Transportation is on your own and parking is free. Tickets are available until June 29. Please contact Tina Hatem at 826-5075 for more information and to buy your tickets.
Opportunity to Altar Serve
Your child can serve in Masses at Our Lady of Victory Parish if they have received their First Holy Communion. Father Sam has one more opportunity for altar server training. Please consider the following training session opportunity: Monday, June 26 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Meet in the front pew of Basilica. Parents/Guardians are welcome to remain or leave during session. No need to RSVP. Contact Father Sam for more information or questions at: 716-828-9428 or by email at [email protected].
Parish Boy Scout Troop
OLV sponsored Boy Scout Troop 547 is seeking new Boy Scouts 11 years and up. We meet on Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m. at the Lackawanna Senior Center on Martin Road in back of building. If interested, please contact: Scout Master Ed Hecky (716-823-4656), Asst. Scout Master Mike (585-224-6348) or Kip (913-9908).
Basilica Tour Guide Volunteer
I am interested in becoming a Basilica Tour Guide Volunteer. Please contact me with more information.
