A Message from the Pastor

Thank you to all who participated in the Feast Day Mass of Our Lady of Victory (Our Lady of the Rosary) this past Monday, October 7. It was a wonderful celebration and a beautiful tribute to our Blessed Mother as well as to the legacy of our beloved Father Baker. Congratulations to all of our employees who were honored for significant years of service or on their retirements from Our Lady of Victory Basilica and School, Homes of Charity and Baker Victory Services. God bless you all for your dedicated and effective service in carrying forward the legacy of Father Baker in service to all the people entrusted to our care here at Our Lady of Victory Institutions. A special thank you to all of our parishioners, donors and benefactors. We could not do all that we do here at Our Lady of Victory without your generous support! God bless you all!

Congratulations to the 26 young people who received the Sacrament of Confirmation by Bishop Malone this past Tuesday evening, October 8. I wish to thank all of their parents and sponsors for their commitment to raise their children in the practice of the faith. I also wish to acknowledge with deep gratitude and appreciation Carm Zomeri, our Director of Religious Education, Vicky McEvoy, Secretary for Religious Education, and the Confirmation Team: Mr. Chris Duncan, Mrs. Linda Duncan, Mrs. Mary Anne Jackson, Fr. Justin Steeg, Mr. Edwin Voll and Mrs. Paula Dalfonso. Thank you all for preparing these young people to be full active members of our Catholic Faith Community here at Our Lady of Victory Basilica!

Next Sunday is World Mission Sunday. I share with you the following letter from Bishop Malone:

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

World Mission Sunday will be celebrated in our local Church and throughout the world on the weekend of October 19th & 20th.

As we celebrate World Mission Sunday, your role is important in reminding your parishioners of our common missionary call. We, as a Church, our mission, directed to all of us men and women of good will, is based on the transformative power of the Gospel which brings joy and peace in our lives. This celebration leads us to mission, the heart of our Christian faith, and encourages our joyful participation in the Church’s global effort to support the Pope’s Missions. Pope Francis has set October 2019 as an Extraordinary Mission Month to foster greater awareness of missio ad gentes (mission to evangelize all nations) and to animate the missionary transformation of Church life and pastoral activity.

Through the World Mission Sunday Second Collection, the Society for the Propagation of the Faith helps the Society to provide resources to missionaries in 1,111 mission dioceses throughout the world to care for Christian communities in need and for the proclamation of the Gospel to the ends of the earth.

Sacrament of Baptism: Our Parish offers a special Pre-Baptism preparation program for parents who desire to share their faith with their children. Parents-to-be must attend this class prior to the birth of their child. Baptisms are usually scheduled two times each month. Call the Rectory to register for classes. Godparents must be Confirmed and practicing Catholics. Non-parishioners are required to have a Letter of Recommendation to serve as a sponsor.

Sacrament of Marriage:

To be married in the Basilica, you must be an active parishioner for at least 9 months prior to setting a date. Engaged couples should contact the pastor before making other wedding arrangements. Couples are required to attend a Pre-Cana Conference, or equivalent pre-marriage preparation program.

Letters of Recommendation:

Recommendations to act as sponsors for Baptism or Confirmation can be issued only to registered members of Our Lady of Victory Parish who have received the Sacrament of Confirmation, attend Mass and receive Holy Communion regularly, have their children attending a Catholic school or Religious Education class. If married, the marriage must be in conformity with the regulations of the Catholic Church.

Devotions:

Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament begins immediately after the 12:10 p.m. Mass in the Basilica on Fridays and concludes with Benediction at 5:00 p.m.

First Friday:

On the eve of the First Friday of each month there are confessions from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Mass is celebrated at 7:30 p.m. on First Friday.

Care of the Sick:

Please notify the rectory office for a visit to any family member who is sick, in the hospital or confined to home. Regular home Communion visits are usually on the First Friday of the month by a priest, deacon, or minister of the Eucharist.

Tours:

To schedule a tour of Our Lady of Victory Basilica, please contact Dianne Bosinski, Tours & Basilica Programs by email at [email protected] or by phone at (716) 828-9424.

Summary of the Readings

Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time

The readings today speak of healing and salvation. In Second Kings, Naaman, a commander of the army of the king of Syria, develops leprosy. He goes to a stranger, a prophet from Israel, when no one else can cure his disease. Much to his surprise, after a simple bath in the river, he is cured. In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus cures ten lepers and sends them to the priest. Only one, a Samaritan, returns to thank Jesus for his cure and only he hears the words, “Your faith has saved you.” The psalm and Timothy remind us that salvation involves justice, kindness, and faithfulness and forever links us with Jesus. In a world as broken as ours, both healing and salvation are necessary. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

School News

Each month we study a saint and a virtue. For the month of October, the character trait was Gentleness and the children learned about St. Angela, “Friend of Girls.” St. Angela was chosen as the first saint for the school year because it seemed as though she mirrored so many of the characteristics of our beloved Father Baker. She took care of many poor girls and taught them to be good. She built houses for them so they could be safe and she found wise young women to teach the children. She took good young women and asked them to help her. They became the first Ursuline Sisters.

The children learned how important the virtue of gentleness is in order to lead a good and special life. Character Trait awards were handed out on Friday, October 4, after Mass in the Basilica. These children were honored for exemplifying the virtue of Gentleness: Jordan Mullins, Arden Zbock, Emma Pomeroy, Michael Sutton, Rowan Geary, Augustyna Thant, Hunter Gryczkowski, Olivia Hudy, Devon Harden, Krista Turner, Tyrese Morgan, Calla Cepeda, Gabrille Forby, Michael Zbock, Alexadra Packard, Ethan O’Hara, Veronica Bohan, Taylor Zajac, Mia Jones and Aubrey Wright. Congratulations to all!

Water savings tips for residences: When doing laundry, always wash full loads. Only wash full loads of dishes in the dishwasher. If washing dishes by hand, fill the sink with water rather than continually running the tap.

Save the Date Living Rosary ~ Monday, October 28

The OLV Altar & Rosary Society will again sponsor a Living Rosary on Monday, October 28, at 7:00 p.m. in the Basilica. Everyone, especially Altar & Rosary Society Members, are invited to join in the presentation. We would like each parish organization to be represented. We need at least 60 people to voice an individual prayer, while holding a candle. The rosary is a powerful prayer to Our Lady. For more information, please contact Mary Anne Jackson at 864-0747.

Prison Ministry

This year the Prison Ministry is only asking for 2020 calendars with no wire for the Attica Prison. We will be collecting the calendars from October to January 1, 2020 (no cards, please). This is a work of mercy and your help is greatly appreciated. You may leave the calendars at the Rectory or give them to Mary Anne Jackson. Thank you.

Pro-Life

We continue to follow the timeline of Mary’s pregnancy with Jesus. Week 30: Baby is now about 16 inches long! Breathing motions are getting deeper and lasting longer. Baby can distinguish between high and low frequency sounds. Baby is now the size of a zucchini.

Message from the Pastor (Continued from Page 2)

Let us fulfill our call by being missionaries to one another and through prayers and support to people doing mission work in different countries in our world. Be assured of my gratitude for all that you do and my prayers for you and those to whom you minister.

Yours fraternally in Christ, Most Reverend Richard J. Malone Bishop of Buffalo

I thank you in advance for your generosity in contributing to the World Mission Sunday Collection next weekend.

May God bless you and may God bless our Church throughout the world!

Vocation Thought Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Whether we realize it or not, countless blessings are being bestowed upon us. Our very existence is itself a gift. How grateful are we for our blessings? How can we live out our appreciation? Perhaps we can do this by answering the Lord when He calls upon us. If God is calling you to a Church vocation, call Father Andrew Lauricella at 716-847-5535. You can also check out the “Priest of the Month” stories on our website at www.buffalovocations.org.
