From the time the sun rises until it sets, I take no food or water. All day, I do good works for others. If I am tempted at all, I roll in thorn bushes or in the snow until the temptation passes. And at night, before bed, I practice the ancient discipline of adminis- tering lashes to my bare back.” The rabbi nodded thoughtfully, but said nothing for some time. Then he beckoned the young man to a window and pointed to an old horse outside. “I’ve been watching that horse,” the rabbi began. “It doesn’t get fed or watered from morning until night. All day it works for other people. I often see it rolling in the snow or in the bushes, as horses tend to do, and frequently I see it getting whipped. “But I ask you: Is that a saint or a horse?” True sanctity begins with a spirit of gratitude for the very gift of life God has breathed into us, a spirit of standing humbly before God and realizing the depth of the Father’s love for all his created. It is that perspective of thankfulness that is at the heart of the hu- man spirit, that reveals to us the meaning and purpose of these lives God has breathed into us, that makes whatever good we do experiences of grace. Like the Samaritan leper who realizes he has been cured by Jesus, we too can be transformed by such joyful grati- tude to God once we realize that, in Christ, we have been “made whole,” “made clean,” “restored” to completeness in the love of God. A horse is a horse, of course, of course . . .

There is an old Jewish tale about a young man who aspired to great holiness. After work-

ing very hard to attain such holiness, he approached his rabbi.

“Rabbi,” he announced proudly, “I believe that I have achieved true sanctity.”

“How so?” the rabbi asked gently.

“Well, Rabbi,” the earnest young man began, “I’ve been practicing virtue and discipline

for some time. From the time the sun rises until it sets, I take no food or water. All day, I do

good works for others. If I am tempted at all, I roll in thorn bushes or in the snow until the

temptation passes. And at night, before bed, I practice the ancient discipline of adminis-

tering lashes to my bare back.”

The rabbi nodded thoughtfully, but said nothing for some time. Then he beckoned the

young man to a window and pointed to an old horse outside.

“I’ve been watching that horse,” the rabbi began. “It doesn’t get fed or watered from

morning until night. All day it works for other people. I often see it rolling in the snow or

in the bushes, as horses tend to do, and frequently I see it getting whipped.

“But I ask you: Is that a saint or a horse?”

True sanctity begins with a spirit of gratitude for the very gift of life God has breathed

into us, a spirit of standing humbly before God and realizing the depth of the Father’s

love for all his created. It is that perspective of thankfulness that is at the heart of the hu-

man spirit, that reveals to us the meaning and purpose of these lives God has breathed

into us, that makes whatever good we do experiences of grace. Like the Samaritan leper

who realizes he has been cured by Jesus, we too can be transformed by such joyful grati-

tude to God once we realize that, in Christ, we have been “made whole,” “made clean,”

“restored” to completeness in the love of God.

NEED HELP TO DO ELECTRONIC GIVING?

To help parishioners with signing up for electronic giving, the parish is planning to have someone from the Stew-

ardship Committee at each worship site on the weekend of October 19th & 20th to assist in the process. Save the

date & more information will be coming to tell you what you need to bring to sign up. Electronic giving is safe &

extremely helpful to the parish in meeting our financial needs.

Each year, Our Lady of the Lakes celebrates a Remembrance Service for our parishioners who have died

during the past year and for their families. This year there will be a special commemoration during the following Masses on Saturday November 2nd at the 5pm Masses at St. Michael and St. Januarius and on Sunday November 3rd at 8am at St. Patrick, 9:30 am at St. Michael, and 10 am at St. Januarius. We will

remember and pray for our loved ones who have died, and special prayers will be offered for them and for your grieving families.

An Adoption Love Story Read the full version at

Having children and raising a family had always been our

expectation. We soon learned, however, that our chances of

becoming pregnant were small. It wasn’t long before we

started talking about the possibility of adoption. I won-

dered if my heart was big enough to love an adopted child

as I would have loved

a biological child. But with

prayerful discernment, we

decided to start the process.

On Christmas Eve, Bill*

and I left the hospital with

Andrew. It didn't take long before there was no doubt in

our minds that he was our son, the greatest gift from

God! We can’t imagine loving a child whom we conceived

more than we love Andrew. *Names changed for privacy. This is a summary of a USCCB Respect Life Program article by the same name and is reprinted with permission. © 2019, USCCB, Washing-ton, D.C. All rights reserved.

In the coming week, past CMA donors will receive a letter in

the mail with a pledge card asking for their CMA commit-

ment. Please prayerfully consider your commitment. Every gift to the CMA helps those in need, supports the mission of

the Church, and comes back to our parish. Thank you. Let us continue to pray for the success of our efforts.

Do you have questions about giving to the CMA?

Where do the funds raised go? How is my contribution used? I only want to give to my Parish, why should I give to the

CMA? Go online to the below links and you will find the answers to

these and more questions.

Anne Meyer Wilber's presentation of Border Wall or Wel-come? will be coming to Naples on Monday October 14th at

6pm and will be hosted by Trinity Federated Church at 123 N Main St, Naples, NY 14512. The 45 minute powerpoint

presentation will be led by Anne and highlights her experi-

ences serving the migrant refugee population in January of 2019 in El Paso Texas. It aims to provide a humanitarian

viewpoint on the changing social climate at the U.S./Mexico border. It provides an opportunity to learn about this

issue from an alternate media venue in the absence of polit-

ical overture.

A person is an organism with unique human DNA governing

his or her own maturation from conception to natural death.

Every person bears the image of God. Any person, therefore,

demands our utmost dignity, respect, and protection—man,

woman, boy and girl—from the womb to the tomb.

The Rochester Black Personhood Initiative is the result of a

coalition of concerned organizations, and is lead by a execu-

tive team of pastors and leaders in the Black and Hispanic

communities.

Please take the time to visit www.aminotachild.com to add

your voice to the Personhood Statement in defense of unborn

children of color living within the parameters of the Diocese

of Rochester.

Please participate in OLOL's Formula For Life

program to help offer support to our local Care-

Net Crisis Pregnancy Centers. Take an empty

baby bottle from one of our worship sites starting

October 6th. You can smile knowing that as you

fill the bottle, your spare change makes great

change for women in our community who want to choose life!

A big thank you from OLOL's Social Ministry Team!

What is a culture of life and how do we build it? Recon-

ciliation students have learned that life is God’s greatest

gift to us. Life makes anything we do possible. God loves

life and wants His children to have full and abundant lives.

That’s why he gave us The Commandments. When we fol-

low God’s rules and pray to make decisions with God, He

will bless us. Prayer is the basis of all our efforts to build a

culture of life. Let us pray that during Respect Life month

that our hope in Christ’s resurrection will strengthen us in

protecting the gift of human life.
