Bishop’s Annual Appeal Diocese of Paterson

“For I Was Hungry…” While there are many ways to donate to the Annual Appeal, there is one option unique to people who are 70½ or over and have an IRA. If you are in this category, the IRS requires you to

take a required minimum distribution from your IRA each year. As a result, this distribution is added to your taxable income and increases the amount of taxes owed to the government. However, instead of taking your required minimum distribution, you can instruct your IRA investment manager to donate this distribution to a charity such as the Bishop’s Annual Appeal and this automatically omits this amount from your adjusted gross income. This tax benefit can be realized by all qualifying individuals, whether you take the standard deduction or itemize your deductions. This can be a significant benefit to you and a great way to support the work of the Bishop’s Annual Appeal. For more information, call the Bishop’s Annual Appeal office at 973-777-8818 x-218. If you are considering making a charitable donation using your IRA required minimum distribution, please be sure to first discuss this with your financial or tax advisor to make sure it is right for you.

My Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Msgr. T. Mark Condon

T T -S S O T “A ”

The parable of the rich man “dressed in purple garments and fine linen” who “dined sumptuously each day” (Luke 16: 19) and Lazarus “who would gladly have eaten the fill of his scraps that fell from the rich man’s table” (16:21) is very poignant in that it is a story of an opportunity lost. The rich man had every opportunity to show mercy and generosity to Lazarus, this poor man who would have been grateful for any scrap of kindness that the rich man would have been willing to give him. But the rich man, by his behavior, and through his lack of compassion, allows a great chasm to develop between himself and God.

When the Day of Judgment arrives for Lazarus and the rich man, there is a complete reversal of fortune. It is Lazarus who is now in possession of every comfort: “when the poor man died, he was carried away by angels to the bosom of Abraham” (16:22). The rich man having lived with ease and who knew every comfort during his earthly life finds himself in quite a different set of circumstances when he crosses the threshold from this life to the next: “The rich man also died and was buried, and from the netherworld, where he was in torment, he raised his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side” (16:23). Now the rich man knows a kind of torment similar to what Lazarus, who was almost invisible to the rich man in life, knew in his earthly life.

It was not the rich man’s wealth that created a barrier between himself and God, it was the hardness of his heart. With his riches he had the opportunity to be a great force for good but he preferred to be s ngy with his wealth concerning himself only with his own pleasure. Now the results of the way that he has lived shows forth results and they are not pleasant.

In the parable, Abraham, the father of faith for the people of Israel, addresses the rich man now in torment: “Moreover, between us and you a great chasm is established to prevent anyone from crossing who might wish to go from our side to yours or from your side to ours” (16:26). The extreme selfishness that this rich man evidenced in life has forged this chasm between God and himself that is the result of a life that turns in on itself and does not care about the well-being of anyone else. As the parable ends, the rich man now in torment asks that he be able to return to his loved ones to warn them of the danger that they are in but Abraham will hear none of it because they already have all that they need to live a life of grace in keeping with what God wants for those who wish to live in friendship with him.

Abraham is the last voice that we hear in this gospel: “If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded if someone should rise from the dead” (16:31). The point at the end of the parable is not that subtle. Jesus, the ul mate expression of God’s love and mercy is calling all those who hear him and see the works that he does to embrace that mercy. Many turned away from the gospel that he was preaching, disappointed in what was perceived as a kind of power vacuum. People were looking for a powerful Messiah who would clear all obstacles that appeared to keep them from having the kind of life that they wanted. Jesus is calling people to a poverty of spirit that requires that all trust is placed upon God’s providence and God’s will for us. Many are not able to accept that and so they turn away from Jesus. Thus a kind of chasm develops and people separate themselves from the way of life that God is calling them to. We who have heard the voice of Jesus are always called to be generous with those in need.

We are asked not only to be generous with the materially poor, important as that is, but we are responsible to be generous with the gi s of mercy and forgiveness. God is always extravagant in the mercy that he shows to us. Our challenge is to be instruments of mercy thus helping to build up God’s kingdom. If we do that, there will never be any chasm between God and us and no divide with others that cannot be somehow bridged. But it takes our willingness to be rich in mercy with all of those who look to us to receive it.

Last weekend we welcomed Mr. Chris Brancato of the Department of Persons with Disabili es of the Diocese of Paterson. Mr. Brancato spoke in support of the Bishop’s Annual Appeal that does so much to support the work of the Catholic Chari es, and par cularly, the Department of Persons with Disabili es. Mr. Brancato highlighted that as we do our part to support the works of charity of our local church so many who look to us for care and compassion are assisted. In a few weeks we will observe Pledge Commitment Weekend for the Bishop’s Annual Appeal which will include a recorded homily from Bishop Serratelli. Thank you for your great generosity in the Bishop’s Annual Appeal.

2019 B ’ A A F I (M 25:35)

Many parishioners have received, or will soon receive, a le er from Bishop Serratelli reques ng support of the 2019 Bishop’s Annual Appeal. This year, the theme of the Appeal is For I was hungty. The Bishop’s Annual Appeal supports four very worthy causes: our Catholic Chari es agencies; Nazareth Village, our diocesan priests’ re rement residence; our inner-city elementary schools; and seminarian educa on. Last year’s Appeal raised a record amount which meant that even more could be done for people in our local Church of Paterson. You can make this year’s Appeal an even greater success by making a generous pledge today. Whatever you can do to help will be a great blessing. Thank you for helping our parish to fulfill our responsibili es to the Diocese of Paterson.

• Furniture for low-income families • Clothing pantries • Substance abuse counseling • Home repairs for seniors • Chore services for low income seniors and the disabled • Legal services for low income immigrants • Meals on Wheels for seniors and the disabled • Case management, job training and support services for returning men and women veterans and older veterans • Preven ve loss of housing and finding new housing for low income individuals and families • English as a Second Language classes • Inner-city Community Gardens to grow fresh produce for food pantries • Food Back Pack Programs for low income children on weekends • Programs for Youth at Risk

• S S With the help of the Bishop’s Annual Appeal last year, much was done to support Catholic schools in the inner-city area, including capital improvements such as roof replacement, HVAC upgrades, interior ligh ng and exterior doors. The Appeal also helped fund financial aid to assist families to afford Catholic school educa on, technology upgrades to enhance the academic programs offered in the schools and support of school ac vi es such as music, art and sports that give a well-rounded educa onal experience.

• S E D P ’ R R The Bishop’s Annual Appeal helps fund the educa on of our seminarians and Nazareth Village, our diocesan priests’ re rement residence in Chester. This is especially important since the number of seminarians has increased drama cally in recent years, along with the cost of their forma on. The Appeal helps both of these groups of men: those who are preparing for a life me of service to the Church and those who have faithfully served for decades.

• P R Half of the amount received over our parish goal will be returned to our parish for our own needs. Not only does the Appeal support many worthwhile ministries throughout the diocese, it will also help our own parish if we reach and exceed our goal.

96 cents of every dollar raised is applied to the Appeal needs as outlined above. The 4 cent balance for fundraising expenses is far below the guidelines recommended by the Be er Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance.

November is the month of the faithful departed. Each year the names of our deceased loved ones are placed in a Book of Remembrance and kept in church during the month of November so that they are remembered in prayer. The envelopes may be returned to the collec on basket or the parish offices by October 30, 2019. Please make sure to clearly inscribe the names of your departed loved ones on the envelopes so that they may be entered in our Book of Remembrance. A Mass of Remembrance will be celebrated for all of those who have died in the past year on November 2, 2019 at 7:30 in the evening.
