In the midst of busy days and the pressing needs of daily life it is easy to let the days of Lent pass by without making the best of them. Lent is a special me of grace that gives us the opportunity to examine our lives and to do our very best to make sure that our rela onship with God is the most important truth in our lives. Every day of Lent is a day to remember how vital it is to be open to the power of the Holy Spirit so that we are guided by the gospel of Jesus Christ above all else. We are s ll at the beginning of Lent; there are four more Sundays of Lent le ; there is s ll me to make this season a me of grace and renewal. Days fly by, the spring approaches and Easter will be here quickly. It is important that we not lose the opportunity to use Lent to deepen our rela onship with the Lord. If you are looking for something to do that will make this Lent an especially deep experience of your faith, think about taking part in daily Mass or at least taking part in Mass one addi onal day a week. When we take part in daily Mass, we appreciate the richness of the readings of Lent as the mysteries of our salva on are unfolded for us each day. Daily Mass helps us to see how close God’s presence is to us and how God reveals himself to us each day in many ways. Through daily Mass, Christ leads us up the mountain with him to teach us, to draw us closer to himself through his word and through the gi of his Body and Blood in the Eucharist. Even though Easter Sunday is five weeks away, today’s gospel gives us a glimpse of the glory that Christ will defini vely reveal through his life-giving death, his resurrec on from the dead and ascension into heaven. Our reading from Ma hew’s gospel on this Second Sunday of Lent tells us that, “Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother and led them up a high mountain by themselves” (Ma hew 17:1). The Lord wants this experience of the Transfigura on that the disciples are about to have to be especially intense; as he takes them up the mountain they move closer toward the heavens and to the place where God reveals himself in a unique way. It is easy to recall Moses going up the mountain to receive God’s law. Now, in Jesus something more will be revealed of God’s inten on to redeem his people through his Son. Now on the mountain, in the place where God dwells, the disciples are given a remarkable, even stunning, look at the true glory of the Master they have been following: “And he was transfigured before them; his face shone like the sun and his clothes became white as light” (17:2). The disciples must have been awed by the majes c glory of God as Jesus is transfigured in glory before them. But there was even more than this dazzling light to see, “And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, conversing with him” (17:4). Jesus speaks with these two great figures of the Old Testament; Moses, liberator of the people of Israel from slavery and Elijah, the great prophet, who stands as the representa ve of all of those prophets of old who told of the coming of the Messiah. Jesus is the new and defini ve liberator of God’s people from sin and death. This experience of the transfigura on must have been almost bewildering to the disciples; not uncharacteris cally, Peter seems especially out of sorts, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah” (17:4). Peter, no doubt wants to do something to honor the presence of these singularly important figures in the history of Israel. But Peter, it seems, was cut off in mid-sentence: “While he was s ll speaking, behold, a bright cloud cast a shadow over them, then from the cloud came a voice that said, ‘This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him’” (17:5). Having seen
Page 5
Pastor’s Message (...continued from Page 4)
that the law and the prophets pointed toward the Son of God as the Messiah, the Deliverer, through the presence of Moses and Elijah, now the disciples are prepared by God’s own voice to understand that the Son of God, Jesus Christ, will need to suffer bi erly and die before the full meaning of God’s plan is revealed in the resurrec on of Christ from the dead. Of course, the disciples were overwhelmed by this revela on by God, “When the disciples heard this, they fell prostrate and were very much afraid. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, ‘Rise, and do not be afraid.’ And when the disciples raised their eyes, they saw no one else but Jesus alone” (17:6-8). As at the beginning of the Transfigura on, when Jesus took them up the mountain, the disciples are once again alone with Jesus. They are the ones who are to stand with him in the moments of his tes ng, his passion, and his death. They are given this experience of the Transfigura on to strengthen them and to give them hope and trust in God’s mercy as they will see their dreams for Christ and libera on for their people smashed and destroyed in the most brutal terms. Even with this remarkable experience of the Transfigura on the disciples will fail. They will leave Christ in solitary isola on in the agony and death that lies before him. We too have the hope of the resurrec on revealed to us through God’s word and the celebra on of the sacraments, especially the Eucharist. Beginning Lent with fervor, we can quickly grow red of trying to address those issues in our lives where we need to work harder in order to deepen our rela onship with the Lord. Lent is a difficult course but if observed as faithfully as possible it will lead to a joyful Easter. In our second reading for this liturgy, Saint Paul reminds us to take heart and to be strong in the gospel we have received: “Bear your share of hardship for the gospel and with the strength that comes from God” (2 Timothy 1:8). The Lord Jesus reveals his love to us in so many ways, we pray for the grace to respond to that revela on of his love by making this Lent a
me of reconcilia on and healing by embracing God’s mercy. As the days of Lent pass by we have the opportunity to encourage one another along the way so that we remember that the witness of our own faith might be the witness that others have been wai ng for in order to deepen their own rela onship with the Lord. May this Lent lead us to an Easter of joy and renewal.
W H H
M Bishop Serratelli has asked all parishes of the Diocese of Paterson to have confessors available for the Sacrament of Reconcilia on on the Monday evenings of Lent between 7:00-8:30. If you have been reluctant to come to the Sacrament of Reconcilia on, have been away from confession for some me or just found it difficult to get to a Saturday a ernoon confession me, this is a wonderful opportunity to re-connect with Christ and his Church. There is no such thing as having been away from confession “too long” to come back. Celebra ng the Sacrament of Reconcilia on is the opportunity to let go of burdens that many carry for a long me. The Lord of mercy is always ready to pardon, to heal, and to welcome you home to his embrace. Please think about using Lent as an opportunity to celebrate sacramental confession and absolu on.

Lenten Regulations on Fast and Abstinence
The Lenten regulations concerning fast and abstinence are as follows:
The days of both Fast and Abstinence during Lent are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The other Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence.
On a day of fast, only one (1) full meal is permitted. Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast. On a day of abstinence, no meat may be eaten. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the law of abstinence. The obligation to observe the laws of fast and abstinence “substantially,” or as a whole, is a serious obligation. The Fridays of the year, outside of Lent, are designated as days of penance, but each individual may substitute for the traditional abstinence from meat some other practice of voluntary self-denial as penance. The time for fulfilling the Paschal Precept (Easter Duty - All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year) extends from the First Sunday of Lent to the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity.
GIFT CARD SCAM Please be alert to these thieves. A number of priests throughout the country have found that their parishion-ers are receiving emails or text messages claiming to be from their pastor, and asking parishioners to purchase gift cards to help the poor. This is a fraud. Please do not respond to any appeal you receive which asks you to purchase gift cards to help the poor and uses the name of the parish or diocese.
