    L A W – M 6, 2019

    A

Winter has come to seem like a very unwelcome intrusion about our lives. But it is winter a er all and even though this winter has not been par cularly harsh we are s ll looking forward to spring. Spring is on the way. “Lent” means “Spring.” With our Lenten observance we open our hearts to the power of God’s grace and mercy in an especially focused way. The promise of spring coincides with the hope and joy that we find in the most important truth of our faith: Jesus Christ, Crucified Savior, and triumphant Risen Lord, is the conqueror of sin and death and our promise of eternal life. Lent begins on March 6th. We begin our me of prepara on for the beginning of Lent.

Lent is always a special opportunity to recommit ourselves to making our rela onship with God the first and most vital rela onship in our lives. When we live in a right rela onship with the Lord everything else in our lives finds meaning and purpose. None of us are exempted from the cares and disappointments of this life but our rela onship with the Lord promises us that what we bear out of love points our des ny toward eternity spent with the Lord.

Easter will be celebrated this year on April 21st. We are about to celebrate Ash Wednesday. On March 6, 2019 we will begin the holy season of Lent. Somehow with Christmas in the not too distant past it is difficult to wrap our mind around Lent. But here it is. Lent begins in the dead of winter and gives us hope of the brighter days of spring that always li the spirit and give us a renewed sense of hope. Lent is an opportunity to examine our lives of faith.

Lent is not a prolonged period to reflect upon our failures but a challenge to rejoice in the fact that God has created us good and made it possible to live in a way that gives us closeness to him and peace of heart. Lent is not the me to be discouraged by how li le we might have improved since last Lent but rather to remember that the Lord Jesus con nually calls us to deeper friendship and challenges us to live as he lives.

Lent is a me for le ng go of old ways of behavior that do not lead us to the fullness of life that Christ promises us if we are open to the power of the Holy Spirit in obedience to the will of the Father. This is the season of grace that can help us to redirect our hearts and ac ons toward living the gospel and is the me to turn away from sinful behavior that can never make us happy. When we do not live as God commands us to we can be sure that we will always compound unhappiness with unhappiness. To change our hearts we must change our way of thinking and lead our lives and behavior in light of the gospel. We observe this Lent in the Year of Mercy and so this Lent is truly the acceptable me to recommit ourselves to our faith so that we may know the peace and joy that the Lord promises to all of those who make the virtues of faith, hope, and love their own.

In a Lenten Message, our Holy Father, Pope Francis notes that Lent and the Year of Mercy help us to recognize that there is a special rela onship between faith and mercy – love. The Holy Father writes:

For all of us, then, the season of Lent in this Jubilee Year is a favorable me to overcome our existen al aliena on by listening to God’s word and by prac cing the works of mercy. In the corporal works of mercy we touch the flesh of Christ in our brothers and sisters who need to be fed, clothed, sheltered, visited; in the spiritual works of mercy – counsel, instruc on, forgiveness, admonishment and prayer – we touch more directly our own sinfulness. The corporal and spiritual works of mercy must never be separated. By touching the flesh of the crucified Jesus in the suffering, sinners can receive the gi of realizing that they too are poor and in need. By taking this path, the ‘proud,’ the ‘powerful’ and the ‘wealthy’ spoken of in the Magnificat can also be embraced and undeservedly loved by the crucified Lord who died and rose for them. This love alone is the answer to that yearning for infinite happiness and love that we think we can sa sfy with the idols of knowledge, power and riches. Yet the danger always remains that by a constant refusal to open the doors of their hearts to Christ who knocks on them in the poor, the proud, rich and powerful will end up condemning themselves and plunging into the eternal abyss of solitude which is Hell. The pointed words of Abraham apply to them and to all of us: ‘They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them’ (Lk 16:29). Such a en ve listening will best prepare us to celebrate the final victory over sin and death of the Bridegroom, now risen, who desires to purify his Betrothed in expecta on of his coming.

Lent is the me to open ourselves to the power of God’s love. Each Lent we carry out special observances and devo ons not because we need to earn God’s love or perform extreme penances but because we need to remind ourselves how much God loves us and that we return that love because of the goodness God has shown us for giving us life and the opportunity to serve him in this life and to be happy with him forever in the next.

We should make this Lent a me that helps us to change at least one thing that we are not Continued on Page 5...

Pastor’s Message (...continued from Page 4) happy with – one behavior that is preven ng us from growing more aware of God’s presence in our lives. Perhaps we need to forgive someone who we hold a grudge against, or let go of a hurt or a disappointment in another person or simply try to live in the moment where we are and serve God in the here and the now without worrying so much about tomorrow. This is the acceptable

me to try something new. We can all do be er and we can all be sure that God is calling each of us to deeper friendship. Do we really want to use this me to be more like the people God wants us to be and makes it possible for us to be?

One of the great gi s of our faith is the Sacrament of Reconcilia on; there is no be er way to start anew than by taking part of sacramental confession. The Sacrament of Penance or Reconcilia on is not something that we should stay away from because we hate the thought of speaking our failures out loud – it is not meant to feel like a sacramental trip to the den st. Confession provides an opportunity to let go of sinful behavior and to start over. I encourage you to take advantage of sacramental confession this Lent. We have the obliga on to confess at least once a year and Lent provides the perfect opportunity to make an examina on of our lives in light of the gospel. The Sacrament of Penance opens us to the power of real change because we are assisted through the grace of sacrament to become what Christ intends us to be. Pope Paul VI noted that penance leads to change of the whole person because penance changes our hearts and makes us appreciate how much we depend upon God for everything. As Pope Paul VI noted:

The kingdom of God announced by Christ can be entered only by a ‘change of heart’ (metanoia) that is to say through that in mate and total change and renewal of the en re person—of all his or her opinions, judgments and decisions—which takes place in him or her in the light of the sanc ty and charity of God, the sanc ty and charity which were manifested to us in the Son and communicated fully.

This is the season for real change and we shouldn’t allow the opportunity to pass us by. Think about returning to confession even if you have been away from the sacrament for a long me. This me is the perfect me. This Lent we once again take part in the “Welcome Home to Healing” ini a ve of the Diocese of Paterson. Bishop Serratelli has made one of his priori es as our shepherd the renewal of the Sacrament of Penance so that we all appreciate what a gi it is and so each Monday night of Lent between 7:00-8:30 one of the priests will be available for individual confession and absolu on. Confession will also be available at the regularly scheduled me on Saturdays at 3:45 PM. Please take advantage of this opportunity to be a

me of grace, peace, and joy so that your celebra on of Easter will find you renewed in heart and spirit. People some mes believe that they have been away from confession too long to ever return. Nothing could be further from the truth. The longer that you have been away from confession the greater your joy will be once you have received sacramental confession and face the day as a new person, free from burdens that you have been carrying again. Don’t worry if you can’t recall the form for confession, “Bless me, Father, etc.” or the Act of Contri on; the priest will be more than happy to assist you with the formula. This is a me to be welcomed home to the healing of the sacrament. Please take advantage of the opportunity to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconcilia on in Lent.

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of universal fast and abs nence. Fas ng is obligatory for all who have completed their 18th year and have not yet reached their 60th year. Fas ng allows a person to eat one full meal. Two smaller meals may be taken, not to equal one full meal. Abs nence (from meat) is obligatory for all who have reached their 14th year.

“Remember that you are dust and to dust you return.” Jarring words and they are meant to be. Unless we are serving God then we are not prepared to return to our maker. Ash Wednesday calls us to reflect on the most important things and life challenges us to use our me well. Please join us for Mass or for a celebra on of the Liturgy of the Word which will both include the imposi on of ashes. All liturgies for Ash Wednesday will take place in the church. The schedule of celebra ons for Ash Wednesday is as follows:

People o en ask: “What can I do for Lent.” There is no be er way to observe Lent than by taking part in daily Mass. Even making the me to take part in Mass on one day addi onal to Sunday will bring you a sense of making Lent a pilgrimage in which you are walking with the Lord. Think about making daily Mass a part of your Lenten observance.

A Lenten Challenge! Every now and then, I come back to a point that many may become weary of. Yes, you guessed it: leaving Mass early. Once again, I want to reiterate that I am not si ng as judge or making a determina on of what anyone’s spiritual life is, what their reasons are, or what the state of their heart is. Only God and the individual know that. I do, however, want simply to raise the possibility that it is not necessary to leave Mass directly a er Holy Communion. It is especially disconcer ng to witness the recep on of Holy Communion at the front of the church followed by a quick exit to the right and down the stairs even before kneeling down to make an act of Thanksgiving. What is the rush week a er week? There are always mes when people may have to leave early and for various reasons but always? The parking in our lot can be nightmarish. I understand that, however, there is very li le me saved by rushing away before Mass is ended. A good challenge for Lent is to slow down a li le bit and to take a moment or two following Holy Communion to spend me in Thanksgiving to the Lord and to be in communion, too, with the Body of Christ, the Church, gathered at Holy Mass. I ask you to consider making this your Lenten Challenge: keep watch with the Lord a li le longer! Thanks for your pa ence.

CATECHIST SUBSTITUTES NEEDED! We are in great NEED of Catechist SUBS! With approximately 450 children enrolled in our programs and over 45 catechists, it is inevitable that some of our volunteers will not be able to teach every session. It is especially true during FLU season! Without our ability to find a SUB for your child's class, children will be sent home.

Our ability to provide effective programming for your children enrolled in our program is only made possible if we have enough volunteers. PLEASE consider volunteering as a SUB. Contact me ASAP at [email protected] and I will share the process, (which is minimal), to allow you to sub in when needed.

Thank You for your consideration and response to this need for your children! Confirmation Program OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES Please see the following list for possible ministry opportunities that all students can become involved with: Fr. English Food Pans Please support the Fr. English Center and support a family or two by making a meal for them to enjoy. Food pans and recipes are available during each confirmation session. All pans should be clearly marked with the meal that it contains and they should be brought back to the next month’s confirmation session FROZEN. Altar Servers This is an important ministry for our parish and your support and involvement once per month is needed! We are in need of servers at all weekend masses. Please contact the Parish Ministry Center (973-256-5200) if you are interested in becoming an altar server. Lectors Readers Wanted! We are in need of lectors to read once per month during one of our liturgies. Please contact the Parish Ministry Center (973-256-5200) if you are interested in becoming a lector. Our Music Ministry Needs You! Join us in our Adult and Children’s Choirs as we share our love for the Lord and praise Him through music. For more information, contact Stella at 973-256-5200 x-23 or talk to her after mass. Faith Formation Assistants Classroom Assistants are needed for our Faith Formation Program. Please contact Trish Filiaci at [email protected] if you are interested in volunteering. Food Bank Community food bank dates have been set for this year. It is a wonderful ministry and opportunity to work with others to help feed the hungry. For more specific information about dates and what is involved in this ministry, please contact Laura Beausoleil at [email protected]. Special Olympic Events Volunteers are needed for upcoming Special Olympic Events in our area. Please contact Chris Troyano for more specific information: [email protected].

Lenten Regulations on Fast and Abstinence

The Lenten regulations concerning fast and abstinence are as follows:

The days of both Fast and Abstinence during Lent are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The other Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence.

On a day of fast, only one (1) full meal is permitted. Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast. On a day of abstinence, no meat may be eaten. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the law of abstinence. The obligation to observe the laws of fast and abstinence “substantially,” or as a whole, is a serious obligation. The Fridays of the year, outside of Lent, are designated as days of penance, but each individual may substitute for the traditional abstinence from meat some other practice of voluntary self-denial as penance. The time for fulfilling the Paschal Precept (Easter Duty - All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year) extends from the First Sunday of Lent to the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity.

Food Pantry Thank You Thank you for your continuous support and generosity in helping to feed the hungry. We are currently pretty well stocked but as always certain items are in need, primarily pasta sauce (NOT pasta) and cereal. Hopefully you can help us to fill this void. Thanks!
