Bishop’s Annual Appeal Diocese of Paterson

“For I Was Hungry…” One of the benefits of giving to our Bishop’s Annual Appeal is the knowledge that the funds stay in our own Diocese and only support important needs in Morris, Passaic and Sussex

Counties. This local connection means that you may be helping your next-door neighbor, a former pastor now living in our priests’ retirement residence, the store owner you see each day as you shop in town – perhaps even a family member. Please help your neighbor in need and make a pledge to the Annual Appeal today! For your convenience, you can make an online gift or pledge at www.2019appeal.org.

T -E S O T “W ?”

Gra tude is a gi that we all appreciate. The gospel reading for this Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary me tells us that the Lord Jesus wants gra tude to be a hallmark of those who follow him. Following upon our reading from Luke’s gospel last week that focused on the importance of faith and the gi that it is for our lives we now see that gra tude is closely aligned with the virtue of faith. We find Jesus healing ten lepers whom he meets on his way to Jerusalem. The lepers are outcasts, because of their illness and the contagion associated with it; they know what it means to be alone and to rely on the scraps of kindness that others might throw their way in order to survive. Standing at a distance from Jesus the ten lepers cry out: “Jesus, Master! Have pity on us!” (Luke 11:14). Jesus does have mercy on the lepers. The Lord sends the ten lepers to the priests who would be able to cer fy that they had been cleansed of their disease and thus grant them readmission to society. As they are on their way to the priests, they discover that they had been cleansed. Only one realizes that he had received more than a physical cleansing; his encounter with Jesus was an encounter with the Son of God. Realizing the gi that he had received he returned to Jesus, “glorifying God in a loud voice; and he fell at the feet of Jesus and thanked him” (11:15-16). Luke adds another detail to this mee ng of Jesus with the grateful leper: “He was a Samaritan” (11:16-17). Samaritans and the people of Israel despised one another. That this Samaritan – not only a Samaritan but a Samaritan leper – should have returned with the proper a tude of gra tude would have been the source of chagrin to Luke’s first readers. And yet gra tude is found in this most unlikely of persons. Jesus asks, almost as if he is speaking to no one in par cular, just making an observa on out loud: “‘Ten were cleansed were they not? Where are the other nine? Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God?’” Jesus does not need the expression of gra tude. We can iden fy with the Lord’s feeling in this situa on. When we give of ourselves to another person and that gi is received without gra tude we miss it. But when someone tells us, “thank you” we are ourselves humbled by the gra tude of another person. Jesus didn’t need the words of gra tude but he knew that the lepers needed to say “thank you” in order to complete the circle and truly be healed both in body and spirit. Jesus tells this grateful and now fully healed leper: “‘Stand up and go; your faith has saved you’” (11:19). The connec on between gra tude and faith is made very clear. Now and then we meet people who can be filled with the gra tude for the gi of life and faith no ma er what circumstances they are in. To be grateful for the gi of life and the possibili es that it holds for all of us is a grace. As long as there is life there is faith and hope. The healing of the one grateful leper tells us to keep our eyes open for the gi of healing and to be grateful for the many ways that the Lord can heal our hearts if we are able to pray: “Lord Jesus, Son of the living God, have mercy on me.” And as o en as we are able to be healed of some hurt or disappointment we are able to be grateful to God for the people who he places in our lives and who can both give and be recipients of the healing that God promises us.

S , O 26 , 11:00 The Feast of Saint Jude is on October 28th. In order to observe Saint Jude’s feast and give the opportunity to the many devotees of Saint Jude to honor him and to pray for his con nued intercession – a er all, we are all in what seems like impossible situa ons at one me or another – we will celebrate a Mass in Honor of Saint Jude on Saturday, October 26th at 11:00 AM in Church.  November is the month of the faithful departed. Each year the names of our deceased loved ones are placed in

a Book of Remembrance and kept in church during the month of November so that they are remembered in prayer. If you would like to remember your departed loved ones during the month of November please use the envelopes found at the doors of the church in order to do so. The envelopes may be returned to the collec on basket or the parish offices by October 30, 2019. Please make sure to clearly inscribe the names of your departed loved ones on the envelopes so that they may be entered in our Book of Remembrance. A Mass of Remembrance will be celebrated for all of the faithful departed, especially those who have died in the past year on November 2, 2019 at ten o’clock in the morning.

C A Many Catholics never completed the process of their full ini a on into the Church by receiving the Sacrament of Confirma on. If you are an adult bap zed Catholic and have not been confirmed but would like to be, please contact me at the parish office or via e-mail and we can talk about the program that will begin in the fall that will lead to receiving the gi s of the Holy Spirit in Confirma on at Easter. If you are an adult Catholic who has never been confirmed please consider taking part in this opportunity.

2019 B ’ A A F I (M 25:35)

Many parishioners have received, or will soon receive, a le er from Bishop Serratelli reques ng support of the 2019 Bishop’s Annual Appeal. Next weekend we will observe Pledge Commitment Weekend. This year, the theme of the Appeal is For I was hungry. The Bishop’s Annual Appeal supports four very worthy causes: our Catholic Chari es agencies; Nazareth Village, our diocesan priests’ re rement residence; our inner-city elementary schools; and seminarian educa on. Last year’s Appeal raised a record amount which meant that even more could be done for

people in our local Church of Paterson. You can make this year’s Appeal an even greater success by making a generous pledge today. Whatever you can do to help will be a great blessing. Thank you for helping our parish to fulfill our responsibili es to the Diocese of Paterson. T B ’ A A : • O C C The largest percentage of Appeal funds support our diocesan Catholic Chari es with dona ons to these programs and services: • Day care and extended day care for working poor families • Assisted transporta on for the elderly and medically frail • Individual and family counseling • Emergency food banks • Adult day care for economically disadvantaged seniors • Housing and case management for persons with HIV/AIDS • Case management for adults and children with HIV/AIDS • Group homes for adults with disabili es • Family Support and case management for families with developmentally and intellectually disabled adults • Pastoral care, spirituality programs and religious educa on for adults with developmental and intellectual disabili es • A er-school and summer programs • Furniture for low-income families • Clothing pantries • Substance abuse counseling • Home repairs for seniors • Chore services for low income seniors and the disabled • Legal services for low income immigrants • Meals on Wheels for seniors and the disabled • Case management, job training and support services for returning men and women veterans and older veterans • Preven ve loss of housing and finding new housing for low income individuals and families • English as a Second Language classes • Inner-city Community Gardens to grow fresh produce for food pantries • Food Back Pack Programs for low income children on weekends • Programs for Youth at Risk • S S With the help of the Bishop’s Annual Appeal last year, much was done to support Catholic schools in the inner-city area, including capital improvements such as roof replacement, HVAC upgrades, interior ligh ng and exterior doors. The Appeal also helped fund financial aid to assist families to afford Catholic school educa on, technology upgrades to enhance the academic programs offered in the schools and support of school ac vi es such as music, art and sports that give a well-rounded educa onal experience. • S E D P ’ R R The Bishop’s Annual Appeal helps fund the educa on of our seminarians and Nazareth Village, our diocesan priests’ re rement residence in Chester. This is especially important since the number of seminarians has increased drama cally in recent years, along with the cost of their forma on. The Appeal helps both of these groups of men: those who are preparing for a life me of service to the Church and those who have faithfully served for decades.

• P R Half of the amount received over our parish goal will be returned to our parish for our own needs. Not only does the Appeal support many worthwhile ministries throughout the diocese, it will also help our own parish if we reach and exceed our goal. 96 cents of every dollar raised is applied to the Appeal needs as outlined above. The 4 cent balance for fundraising expenses is far below the guidelines recommended by the Be er Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance.

M S C Thank you for your generosity in the second collec on on the last weekend in September for the Holy Father’s Mission Society, The Propaga on of the Faith. Please discard the envelope in your October packet of envelopes since the collec on was taken at the end of September rather than the end of October. With three special collec ons in October a fourth was too much of a burden on your generosity!
