THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD There is a light that burns over the grotto where Jesus
was born in Bethlehem. Each year, a child from Upper
Austria fetches the light from the grotto. The light is
carried in two blast proof miner’s lamps on an Austrian
Airlines jet from Tel Aviv, Israel to Vienna, Austria. It
is distributed to delegations from across Europe who
take it back, with a message of Peace, to their own
countries. Austrian Airlines then flies the miner’s
lamps containing the Peace Light from Bethlehem to
New York City. Cadette troop #4267 and their leaders
received the peace light at a ceremony at Our Lady of
the Skies Chapel at JKF Airport and brought it to our
Nativity scene. We receive this light from Bethlehem
and it is our honor to spread this continuous flame and
its message of peace. This lamp will remain in Our
Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church at the statue of
Our Blessed Mother for the Christmas season.

From the Pastor’s Desk….
Dear Parishioners, The feast of the Holy Family draws our attention to Hannah and Samuel, as well as Joseph and Mary. These stories teach us that in the midst of struggles and hardships as a family, God’s care and providence are ever present. God makes fertile what seems barren and brings new life forth in surprising ways. Faith in God, amidst the many joys and sorrows that define family life, is what is needed for families today. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, pray for us. Your support of the parish and our charities at Christmas time is deeply appreciated. Your generosity provided a beautifully decorated church and festive music for our celebrations, a modest bonus for all our employees, a fun-filled volunteer party (next Sunday!) and generous contributions to Catholic Charities, Hour Children, Bridge to Life, St. Mary’s Children’s Hospi-tal and families in need. Thank you for sharing your time, talent and treasure through your parish church. May God fill you with the joy of his presence and may we continue to grow into a Holy Family here at OLBS.
Msgr. Flood is in rehabilitation in
Ozanam Hall—your prayers for him
would be appreciated.

Luke 2:41-52 Although Jesus apparently understood from a tender age how he related to God (“Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?”), he also knew that he owed appropriate respect to his parents. This is why he stayed in their home in Nazareth and was obedient to them. Their direction, their teachings, their example, and their rules would all have shaped Jesus in his hu-manity. It was thanks in no small part to the matriarch and patriarch of the Holy Family that Jesus “advanced in wisdom and age and favor before God and man.” We should be advancing in these ways too! The Holy Family serves as a beautiful model for us in this regard. They help us learn how to submit our lives to the loving leadership of our heavenly Father. But more than this, Mary and Joseph also serve as intercessors who, like any faithful family member or friend, want to pray with us and for us. Let us turn, then, to the intercession of the Holy Family asking that our families may be holy too.
Words of Life!
“[W]e know what true, authentic love looks like. It looks like the man on the Cross. This deep, pure love that motivated Jesus to offer his life for ours, is the love that will answer the longing in our hearts, if we let it. — USCCB 2015-16 Respect Life Program - “10 Surprising Tips
for Love the Culture Won’t Tell You” -Copyright © 2015, United
