2 Elephant in the Room series

This new series for parents will tackle the most challenging issues facing families today. These gatherings are meant to educate, sup-port and empower parents with the help of top experts in the field. Coming up is a morning dedicated to help-ing children form good habits for success. This means having a plan for parenting – creating a mission, purpose and goals for the family. The first program features the mother-daughter duo of Pam Hurwitz and Jullian Rhodes who will share over 30 years of minis-try with children, teens, parents, and families in the diocese of Orange. Their stories will help bring focus and sup-port to wherever you find yourself on your faith journey. Through real-life tears and laughter, they will lead families into the arms of Christ. This truly begins by bringing Christ into the home and not letting prayer become just one more thing to do, but who we are. They will discuss the importance of starting at a very young age to build that foundation – a real home – before children step out into the world. Mark your calendar for the next “Elephant” program about anxiety, depression and sui-cide, a growing challenge for families today. Presenter will be a nationally-acclaimed expert and practitioner. A third program is scheduled March 7 on social media and the internet.

The Heights is our teen ministry that has one simple goal; Lead Teens Closer to Christ! We do so through prayer, liturgical involvement, service opportuni es, community building, social events, and of course The Heights gatherings. Our ministry is de-signed to create a place where teens, confirmed and unconfirmed, can support each other and grow in faith and friendship while learning what it means to be a Catholic teen today.

‘Harvest of souls’ Annual Memorial Mass is Nov. 7

Each year during the month of November, the Church invites us to remember our departed relatives and friends in a special way. The faith community at OLA will celebrate this call at its Annual Memorial Mass Thursday, Nov. 7, at 6:30 p.m. in church.

Please join us as we remember and pray for all who have died in the past year, our “harvest of souls.” Catholic tradition teaches that “it is holy and good to pray for the dead that they may be loosed from their sins” (2 Macabees 12). To pray for the dead is one of the Spiritual Works of Mercy.

Families may bring a framed photograph of their deceased loved one to the office beginning this week. It will be included in the display in the church vestibule, beneath the tapestry of Our Lady of the Assumption. NOTE: Due to limited space, these pho-tos are limited to 5” X 7” in size. Please include your name and phone number on the back.

A reception hosted by the OLA Bereavement Ministry will take place following the Memorial Mass. All are welcome.

Fair Trade candy As you prepare for Halloween,

consider purchasing treats that are not chocolate produced with child labor. The only acceptable chocolate is Fair Trade, produced under safe, ethical, sustainable guidelines with-out the use of child slavery (forced labor).

You might find the best choice is a non-chocolate treat that you can offer children at your door knowing that you are also supporting the rights of children around the world.

Dear OLA Parishioner,

The past four years have been an exceptional time of transition and transformation for our parish. As a community, we stood together through the capital campaign, the move into a tem-porary worship space, the renovation of our church and its re-dedication. At the same time, we continued to support our mission and ministries at OLA. We give thanks to the Lord for all that has been accomplished by God’s grace working through us, individually and collectively.

As good stewards of your contributions, we always strive to be as transparent as possible. Here we present a complete financial and ministry report for the Fiscal Year 2018 – 2019. Some important notes…

• First of all, we thank you for your sacrificial giving throughout the capital campaign. The result is our beautiful renovated church! We can take pride in this legacy of faith;

• It is important to know that our renovation costs have exceeded capital campaign pledges by $464,000, largely due to adding structural steel to the roof, and the requirement to expand our heating and air-conditioning capacity;

• We are asking those who made pledges, to faithfully fulfill their capital campaign commit-ment; and we are inviting all other parishioners to join us in paying down this cost;

• We can meet this new goal if all donors contribute an additional 10% over their original pledge, and all other parishioners make a pledge;

• Remember, we all are benefitting from our new worship space!

We encourage you to take the time this week to review this four-page report. It is truly a testament to the wonderful ways God is working in our parish and in the community we serve. Let us celebrate this abundance as Grateful Disciples.

Monthly Council Reports

Parish Mission Statement

Our Lady of the Assumption welcomes all people to grow in the Catholic faith as we celebrate

our diverse community, nurture the Gospel message, and exemplify our love of Christ by serving others.

In the spotlight…

Administration Plans for a new welcome center on the patio have be-gun with a projected start date of January 2020. The parish has hired a social me-dia consultant to assist with parish communications.

Community Life This council evaluated the recent event for newcomers and is planning steps to im-prove our follow-up to each new parishioner registered.

Formation This council is focused on supporting families with so-cial events such as Trunk or

Treat, and parent education, such as the new “Elephant in the Room” series.

Hispanic Pastoral Care Ministry to the Sick and Homebound is the focus of this council. Also, the next burrito sale is Sun-day, Nov. 10.

Outreach This council reports the start of Good News People with 17 participants. It also gave honorable mention to Susan Villanueva for her years of service as the coordinator of OLA’s participation in the Walk for the Hungry

Vietnamese The Vietnamese Community celebrated its 40th anniver-sary at OLA and the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. Its leadership council is dedicat-ed to increasing the number of families by 10% per year.

Worship This council will be imple-menting the Mass Bags for children after a false start (bags disappeared on the first Sunday). The Audio-Visual Ministry is collecting smart phones to be used at Mass by the hearing-impaired (see Page 5).

What the councils want the parish to know this month

Pastoral Council

Each month, the Pastoral Council supervis-es the progress made on SMART Goals for every area of parish life – Specific, Measure-able, Achievable, Relevant and Timely. The councils also report on their success in finding new members and moving experienced members into positions of leadership. A list of all our council representatives will be printed next month.

Some goals “in the works” include an effort to gather signatures on letters to Congress to support the Global Nutrition Fund. Watch for the bulletin insert next week. Another goal, long in planning, is the “Elephant in the Room” series which begins Nov. 2 to offer parents education and support. (See Page 2.) Other areas of focus include the prayer life of our faith community, and opportunities for retreats for men and women.
