ADVENT
Advent has a twofold character: as a season to prepare for Christmas when Christ’s first coming to us is
remembered; and as a season when that remembrance directs the mind and heart to await Christ’s Second
Coming at the end of time. Advent is thus a period for devout and joyful exception.

Mass will be celebrated on December 8th at

Dear Friends, The season of Advent is divided into two portions. A period of preparation, followed by a period of expectation. The di-viding point is December 17th. That division is marked by the beginning of the recitation of the first of seven antiphons during the chanting of the Magnificat of Vespers starting on the evening of December 17th. These seven antiphons are called the “O Anti-phons” because they each begin with the word “O”. They address Jesus by seven titles: O Wisdom of God; O Lord of the House of Israel; O Root of Jesse; O Key of David; O Morning Star; O King of the Nations; and, finally, on Christmas Eve, O Emmanuel, God with us. In the Gospel, Jesus exhorts us to be watchful and alert. The original Greek the texts adds, “And be ye prayerful.” Advent is a time for us to be watchful, alert, and, yes, to be prayerful as well. This is how we are to be prepared. Just as John the Baptist, the last of the Old Testament prophets and the first of the New Testament saints, exhorted his listeners to prepare the way of the Lord at His first coming, so Jesus exhorts us to be prepared for His second coming. That second coming will come in two stages. The first stage, an individual coming of Jesus for each of us at our own deaths when we will meet Him face to face to give an account of our lives. And the second stage, the universal reckoning, when we will each see Christ’s mercy and justice applied to all of creation. The Old Testament prophets pleaded with the Lord to come to save us. To save us from ourselves. And the Lord heard the cry of His people, and He did come. We no longer cry out, seemingly in vain, “where is our God?” He is here among us. Emmanu-el – God with us. Where? Right here on the altar. Jesus Christ. Right here among us, Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity, in the Holy Eucharist; in the Blessed Sacrament on our altars and in our tabernacles. And in the other sacraments as well, especially in the sacrament of confession. The season of Advent is a particularly good time to approach the sacrament of confession as a powerful means of preparing for the coming of Jesus at Christmas. Here at Our Lady of Mount Virgin, in addition to the regularly scheduled times for confession on Saturdays at 3:30 PM and in Spanish on Sundays at 1:00 PM, we will be hearing confessions Sunday, De-cember 23, starting at 7:00 PM. Please take advantage of these extra hours to approach the Lord in the sacrament of confession. Advent is a special time for us to reflect on our need for God to come to save us from the power of sin. This holy season brings with it the special grace for us to enter more beautifully into the wonder of Christmas; the wonder of Almighty God’s coming to us in the form of a defenseless infant; emptying Himself for us; emptying Himself to save us; to save us from ourselves. Empty-ing Himself, yet all the while remaining the Most High God. God humbling Himself to share in our humanity, so that we might come to share in His divinity.
Especially during this season of Advent, we should long for God to tear open the heavens and come down. To come down
to save us. To remove from each one of us the veil of sin that prevents us from approaching God. To come to us especially in the sacraments of confession and the Eucharist in order to come alive in each one of us. To come alive in each one of us to transform us, so that we might embrace the salvation that Jesus has already won for us.
Time is short. The Church calls Advent “a period of devout and expectant delight.” Before we get too caught up in the external preparations for Christmas, let’s make sure that we make room for “the devout and expectant delight” of the season of Ad-vent. Let’s prepare our hearts and our souls, as well as our homes, to welcome the coming of Jesus. God bless, Father David

Parishioners are asked to take a tag from the Christmas tree, purchase the gift indicated, and return both the gift (unwrapped) and the tag, to the church by December 9th. Delivery to designated charities will be made on December 10th.
We look forward to your continued support. We provide gifts to 11 organizations, including Catho-lic Charities, Roosevelt Care Center, and Great Expectations. For some of their clients this is the only gift they receive for Christmas. We are in need of additional volunteers to sort, bag and deliver the gifts on Monday morning, December 10th. We will meet downstairs at 9:00 am to sort the gifts. A few more helpers would make the job easier. It's actually a lot of fun working together. If you can, please join us.

Evening Prayer in the Tradition of Taizé
From Darkness to Light
On Sunday, December 16, at 7:00pm in the church, Our Lady of Mount Virgin Parish will celebrate an evening prayer service in
the tradition of the ecumenical community in Taizé, France. Set in the soft radiance created by
glowing candles surrounding icons, meditative chants will be interspersed between readings of
sacred scripture including prophesies of the coming of the Messiah and reports of the
impending birth of Jesus as chronicled in the gospels. Silence will provide time for personal
meditation and reflection. This special Advent prayer service will help you
leave the stress of everyday life at the door and feel the calming influence of contemplative communal prayer.
Come wait in joyful expectation
for the birth of our Lord.
Come pray through song, scripture, and silence.
Come meditate in the soft glow of candlelight.
