Advent has a twofold character: as a season to prepare for Christmas when Christ’s first coming to us is

remembered; and as a season when that remembrance directs the mind and heart to await Christ’s Second

Coming at the end of time. Advent is thus a period for devout and joyful exception.

From the Desk of Father David

Monday, December 9 THE FEAST OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY Masses will be celebrated at 7:00 AM, 12:00 Noon, and 7:00 PM

5:30 PM (in Spanish) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ OUR ADVENT NOVENA WILL CONTINUE MONDAY, DECEMBER 9 AFTER THE 7:00 PM MASS

On Monday we celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. It is the patronal feast day of the United States. On that day we celebrate the fact that Mary, preserved from original sin at the moment of her conception, was uniquely prepared by God to be the “singular vessel of devotion” because of what would be her intimate relationship to, and participation in, the incarnation of God as the God-man, Jesus, the Christ. Mary’s earthly journey is framed by two solemnities. On Monday we celebrate the beginning of Mary’s earthly pilgrimage, her Immaculate Conception. At the other end of her earthly pilgrimage we cele-brate the Solemnity of the Assumption on August 15. The Assumption celebrates the fact that Mary was as-sumed body and soul into heaven upon the end of her life on earth. The two solemnities are inextricably linked; for it is by virtue of her sinlessness that Mary was spared the corruption of death as we know it. Mary’s soul was never separated from her body, but was assumed, intact, into heaven. Both celebrations, Mary’s Immaculate Conception and her Assumption, celebrate a unique aspect of Mary’s being. And that aspect was revealed by the archangel Gabriel when he saluted Mary with the words “Hail, full of grace.” Actually, “full of grace” is an imperfect translation of the Greek word kecharitomene, a word that appears only this once in all of Scripture. It is a unique word to describe a unique situation pertain-ing to a unique individual. In the original Greek it expresses the concept of Mary as one who has been fully endowed by God with the plenitude of grace. The words “full of grace” do not go far enough to express this extraordinary reality. What the angel Gabriel communicates to Mary, and to us, with this unique word, kecharitomene, is more than a description; it is a title; a unique title, describing a unique action, performed by God with respect to a unique individual, who has been chosen to play a unique role in the history of our salvation. Kechari-tomene is not only what Mary has, it is who Mary is. Pope Pius IX described it in terms of being “a singular privilege and grace granted by God.” And so, while we do not worship Mary – worship, or in Latin latria, being reserved for God and God alone − the dulia, or veneration, that we owe the saints is intensified in respect of Mary. Theologians describe the veneration which we owe Mary as hyperdulia – veneration going above and beyond the veneration we owe other saints. And this hyperdulia is owed Mary in respect of one thing - that Mary is, indeed, kecharitomene; she who is, in the very essence of her being, the absence of sin and the very fullness of grace. Our perfect role model always, but especially during this Advent season as we prepare for the coming of Christ – He who Mary had the singular privilege to bear, and embrace, and love, with a mother’s special love. Truly blessed art thou, Mary, amongst all women, for blessed is the fruit of thy womb.

ADVENT BIBLE STUDY

Presented by Fr. Louis A. Mattina

The following Mondays before and during Advent:

Dec 16, Dec 23

7:30 to 8:30PM in the Parish Center

All are welcome to participate in prayer and study of the Sacred Scriptures as we examine

the Infancy Narratives in the Gospels. Attendance at all 4 sessions is NOT required

so please join us as your schedule allows. Please bring a Catholic Bible.

CHRISTMAS GIVING TREE

Parishioners are asked to take a tag from the Christmas tree, purchase the gift and return both the gift (unwrapped) and the tag to the

church the weekend of December 14-15, 2019. De-livery to designated charities will be made on De-cember 16th. We look forward to your continued support. We provide gifts to 11 organizations, including Catholic Charities, Roosevelt Care Center and Great Expectations. For some of their clients, this is the only gift they receive for Christmas. We are in need of additional volunteers to sort, bag and deliver the gifts on Monday morning, December 16th. We will meet downstairs at 9:00am to sort the gifts. A few more helpers would make the job easier. It's actually a lot of fun working together. If you can, please join us.

ADVENT CONFESSIONS SUNDAY, DECEMBER 22

7:00 P.M.-8:00 P.M.

OLMV Parish will hold its Advent Confessions on Sunday Evening, December 22 at 7:00 P.M.. We will have several priests available to hear confessions. Adoration of the Blessed

PARISH REGISTRATION: In order to be considered a registered parishioner, an adult (persons 21 years of age or older) must complete and submit a registration form. These forms can be picked up at the parish office. Completed forms must be brought to the parish in person. Please remind young adults (family and friends) that they must be separately registered with the parish. Ordinarily, for Baptism, First Communion, Confirmation or Matrimony, or to receive a eligibility certificate, persons must be registered and active members of OLMV.

ELIGIBILITY LETTERS FOR GODPARENTS AND SPONSORS: A person seeking a “sponsor letter” to serve as a godparent for the Sacrament of Baptism or a sponsor for the Sacrament of Confirmation must have received all three Sacraments of Initiation and be a Confirmed Catholic who is active in his or her parish and, if married, be in a valid, Catholic marriage. An “active” Catholic is understood to be a person who is registered, attends Mass regularly, and whose lifestyle is in keeping with the Catholic faith. They should ensure that their own school age children are attending Mass, are enrolled in religious education, and have received their sacraments.
