Administrator’s Message
There are few times during the year that are more sacred for a family than Christmas. It is so rich in traditions which, despite commercialism, still stir our hearts and fire our imaginations. The manger scene, the tree, the music and carols, and the lights shining in the winter darkness all joyfully proclaim the birth of Jesus Christ. Opportunities abound to gather and rekindle old friendships and start new ones!
The school is abuzz with excitement as we prepare for our Christmas Concert on Wed Dec 6th @ 7:00 p.m. It will feature all children from kindergarten to grade five singing songs during the Performing Arts Academy production of “A Charlie Brown Christmas”. Our G6-9 Bands will get the evening underway with a rendition of your holiday favourites. We look forward to seeing and hearing the sights and sounds of Christmas come alive in our gymnasium that night! Elementary students and the JH Band should be at school by 6:30 p.m. which is when the doors to the gym will be opened.
Our annual Mount Carmel Hockey Classic is being held on Thursday December 21st at the nearby Southside Arena. The puck will drop around 9:30 that morning as our G8 and G9 Hockey students vie for bragging rights. As per usual, this last Thursday before the Christmas break will be a full-day of school and Friday De-cember 22nd a half-day. All members of our school community and their close friends are more than welcome to join us on both Dec 6th and on the 21st!
On behalf of our staff, we wish all students of Our Lady of Mount Carmel School and their families a very Merry Christmas and a Blessed 2018.

Hello OLMC Families,
The School Council thanks the new families who joined our No-vember meeting. There’s always room at our table for any parent
who would like to participate! Please note that our next meeting will be January 16 at 6:30 pm in the library. If you would like to join our mailing list, please contact us at [email protected]. Once on our mailing list, you will receive information on all upcom-ing events hosted by our School Council such as casinos, hot lunches, pancakes on Shrove Tuesday, and the family dance and silent auction. We hope to meet a few new members on January 16th.
We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all parents who have signed up and volun-teered at our Casino being held on December 7 & 8th. If you haven’t yet signed up, and would like to help, please email [email protected].
The next hot lunch will be held on December 8th with Deluxe Burger Bar. All student orders may be made through www.healthyhunger.ca. Please consider volunteering for 45 minutes to help distribute the lunches from 11:45 am– 12:20 pm. December 3rd is the last day you can order this hot lunch. Extras will not be available in the JH Canteen. Pro tip: There are seven more hot lunches available and you may pick and pay for all of them at once! That’s the equivalent of one week of lunches that you or your child won’t have to prepare!
Easy Fundraising: Keep submitting your itemized Boston Pizza receipts to our school office, which will provide our School Council with an extra 5% cash for school programs and activi-ties.
On behalf of your School Council, we wish everyone an exciting Advent season and a Blessed Merry Christmas. We hope all our fami-lies enjoy this beautiful season with family and friends in the beauty of the white Christmas which is promised. Almighty Father, may we look forward to the birthday of Christ, experience the joy of salvation, and celebrate that feast with love and thanksgiving. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you, one God, for ever and ever, AMEN.

December Music/Band News
We’ve had a great start to the band season this year! In early fall we went on a successful trip with the grade 6 classes to Jumpstart at the College of Alberta. While there, students learned how to play their instruments and were treated to a concert by the clinicians.
Next, our Junior High Band played a beautiful rendition of ‘O Canada’ at our school’s Remembrance Day service. I would like to send a huge thank you to Nikolai Tchesnokov for playing Last Post on his trumpet as a special tribute. Going forward, we are going to start preparing for the upcoming festival sea-son with some new pieces that will continue to showcase our band’s talents.
All of our music classes and bands are working hard to prepare for this year’s Christmas Concert on Wednesday, December 6. We are very excited to show-case what we have been working on and entertain you with some new Christ-mas songs mixed with some of the classics. All of our music will be performed throughout the duration of our Christmas play, A Charlie Brown Christmas.
We ask elementary students to please dress in their “Sunday Best” for the performances-no sweat pants please. All band students are asked to dress nicely in black, if possible. The concert starts at 7:00pm.
We look forward to seeing you then!
Merry Christmas!

Inclement Weather
We are entering the cold season and we encourage students to dress appropriately for the weather. Students go outside at recess and lunchtime unless the weather is inclement. Components of in-clement weather are continuous rain, extreme wind, or extreme cold (combination of temp and wind-chill factor of -20 Celsius).
Students stay inside during inclement weather. We are in contact with the weather bureau and we also follow a weather chart that
gives us the necessary information. Rest assured that we would not allow the little ones’ to freeze (and not even the big ones’ either!). We also rely on students to use good judgment when it comes to freezing temperatures. If they arrive at school early, they can access the school to stay warm.
Please be advised that the following Radio and TV Stations will carry announce-ments with respect to transportation cancellations due to inclement weather condi-tions.

Idling By-Law
The City of Edmonton Idling Bylaw was put into effect as of January 1, 2013. The Bylaw pre-vents vehicles from idling in designated areas near schools and hospitals.
The Bylaw only applies when the temperatures rise above zero degrees Celsius. Drivers can-not idle for more than three minutes within any 30-minute period when parked in an area des-ignated as no idling.
Bylaw exemptions apply to vehicles licensed to provide public transport, such as
School buses and taxis; emergency vehi-cles and vehicles transporting medically
fragile people. We all deserve clean air. With your help, we’ll be able to create a healthier environment for our students and school communities.

Blessings Mount Carmel Families! Throughout the month of November, the Mount
Carmel community continued its spiritual journey focusing upon the theme of Hearts
to Love, Hands to Serve. In keeping with this year’s message, MTC students con -
cluded their social justice activity – We Scare Hunger. We greatly appreciate the
amazing contributions, kindness and efforts on display from all of our students
and families! In addition, they continued with their morning prayers and daily
readings emphasizing the importance of selflessness, humility, and extending
kindness to others, particularly to those less fortunate. As we get closer to Christ-
mas and bearing this year's theme in mind, Mr. Leonard and his leadership team
will be spearheading his annual social justice initiative – Toys for Tots.
On November 9th, Mount Carmel acknowledged the significance of being sol-
diers of peace as well as the sacrifice and brave contributions of both our veterans and present-day
military personal with a solemn and touching Remembrance Day commemoration. Thanks so much
to the organizing committee as well as to the students and staff for their hard work and inspiring
message.
Now that we are into December, the Mount Carmel community is embarking upon the Advent sea-
son. This year, students will be celebrating Advent with their classmates as they prepare for Christ-
mas. Though Advent is an ideal time for quiet and joyful preparation for the celebration of Jesus’s
birth, it is also a time to enjoy the hope that Christ’s Resurrection points to. As part of the spirit of
Christmas, all are invited to attend and celebrate this festive season with our Christmas Concert on
Wednesday, December 6 at 7:00 p.m.
May Christ’s peace be with you always!

Chaplain, Our Lady of Mount Carmel School
Advent
Advent has a twofold nature: It prepares us for Christmas, when we recall Christ’s first coming among us, and it is also a time when we look forward to his second coming at the end of ages. Advent is a season of joyful expecta-tion.
Advent, the Church's new year, is an invitation to wake up! This can be a turn-around time for us. Now is the time to understand ourselves more completely. Now is the time to improve our relationships with peers and with God.
Before Jesus came, the people of Israel waited and prayed for the Messiah, who would free them from foreign rulers. During Advent, the Scripture readings tell us about Israel’s desire for the Messiah prom-ised by God and about the Church’s yearning for Jesus to come again as he promised.
The Advent wreath is a sign of our waiting. Its green branches, shaped into a circle, are a sign of life. The three purple candles remind us to make our best preparations for Jesus. The pink candle on the third Sunday of Advent shows our joy that Jesus’ birthday is almost here. The lighted candles represent Jesus, the Light of the world. With great joy we receive him after an Advent of waiting.
Another, now somewhat commercialized, symbol of Advent is the Christmas lights that we see lighting up our houses and places of business. Although not all of us who put up these colorful lights may realize their significance, what they are saying is “We are Christians waiting for Jesus”. It can be very com-forting to know that there are so many people that are sharing in our Advent journey.
How do I show through my actions and words that I am truly and joyfully wait-ing for Jesus to come into my life in an ever deeper and more loving way?
During Advent we are waiting for Jesus. It is equally true that Jesus is waiting for us. He has been waiting all along, we just need to welcome him.

O come, divine Messiah; the world in silence waits the day
When hope shall sing its triumph and sadness flee away.
(O Come, Divine Messiah, S.J. Pellegrin)
The season of Advent is upon us. It is a sacred time of prayer, reflection, and preparation for the coming of Jesus.
There are so many ways that families can share in the joy and anticipation of the birth of our Saviour. Archbishop
Smith shares how we can bring the Word of God more deeply into our classrooms and homes in his message to us
this month. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, as we light the candles on our Advent wreaths, we can also reflect
on the hope, peace, joy, and love that is to be found in the gift of Jesus Christ. There are many special events that
are being held in our parishes and schools; evenings of Advent song, the preparation of hampers for families who
would benefit from extra support, extra opportunities to celebrate the sacrament of Reconciliation, to name a few.
The Catholic Bishops of Alberta and the Northwest Territories released a supplementary letter just before Catholic
Education Sunday. In it, they gave a call to Catholics to join in and spread the great news of Catholic education.
They share, “It is important that everyone be ready to stand up for our faith and for our schools. Please be prepared
to speak out in support of our Catholic schools whenever you can. We are proud of who we are as Catholics.” You
can read the entire letter at https://goo.gl/cauRBf. We will be proudly sharing the story of the richness of Catholic ed-
ucation in Edmonton Catholic Schools using the hashtag #ECSDFaithInspires in the upcoming months, and we en-
courage you to help us spread the message that Catholic education is an outstanding and important choice for fami-
lies to guide our children and youth as they learn and grow in mind, body, and spirit.
We are embarking on a legacy project and would like to be able to capture the journeys of families who have 3 or 4
generations that are able to share their story of Edmonton Catholic Schools. If your family is interested in participat-
ing, please email a brief overview of your generations to [email protected] .
The response to our Celebration of Catholic Education Evenings in November was tremendous! We have included
the responses to the questions which people shared with us as part of the feedback sheets.
Edmonton Catholic Schools is excited to participate in the Hour of Code, once again this year. This is the fourth year
that we will be participating, and this year’s event will be the best one yet! Hour of Code is a global movement that is
supported by Code.org with the purpose of reaching tens of millions of students in 180+ countries through a one-hour
introduction to computer science and computer programming. Coding is a great way to develop literacy, numeracy,
creativity, and thinking skills. Last year we had over 22,000 students participate and this year we are hoping for
25,000! Our goal is to have a <Bit of Code> In Every School.
In his Sunday Angelus to mark the beginning of Advent last year, Pope Francis shared the following message: “In this
season of Advent, we are called to expand the horizons of our hearts, to be amazed by the life which presents itself
each day with newness.” I wish you all an Advent that fills you with this amazement!
Sincerely,
Joan Carr, Superintendent
Advent Parent Message from His Grace
Archbishop Richard Smith
December 2017
Dear Friends,
In December, especially in Edmonton, we notice that the hours, minutes of sunlight diminish. It is
during this time of darkness that we begin a new liturgical year. The season of Advent is upon
us. Advent is a time of preparation for Christmas. We prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus
Christ, the Light of the World (John 8:12). The prophet Isaiah foretold this event when he wrote:
The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep
darkness – on them light has shined. (Isaiah 9:2)
During this Advent season as we prepare for Christmas, I invite you to listen to Jesus, the Word
of God and to be guided by the Word. As the Psalmist writes: Your word is lamp unto my feet
and light to my path. (Ps 119:105)
There are many ways to listen to the Word. In our Catholic Schools the Word of God pro-
claimed, studied and discussed. I invite you, as I have invited everyone in the Archdiocese, to
hear the Word of God in three ways:
To prepare a prayer space in your home or classroom where a Bible takes the place of hon-
our;
To pray a simple prayer before and after meals. I will assist you in this by offering a biblical
verse to help you to hear the Word of God. These are available through the parish Sun-
day bulletin.
To discuss the Sunday homily as a family.
With Christ as our guide, may you continue to let your light shine before others, so that they may
see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven (Matt.5:16) during the Advent sea-
son and throughout the liturgical year.
I pray that you have a blessed Christmas!
Richard W. Smith
Archbishop of Edmonton
LIVING IN THE WORD OF GOD Message from Bishop Smith continued
Creation of a Prayer Space in the Home
In his recent Pastoral Letter, Living in the Word of God, Archbishop Richard Smith offers some thoughts
as to how we, as members of this Archdiocesan family, can together listen carefully to the Word of God
and, in a shared commitment, put it into practice. ” St. Paul teaches that faith comes from what is heard.
This means that the first act of the disciple is to listen carefully to what God is saying to us in the words
of Jesus. The hearing of Christ's Word demands a silent and attentive listening. This requires effort and
determination. Living in a world of noise, we must be always cultivating, with the help of God's grace, an
inner stillness in which we are disposed to hear and be transformed by the Word of God.”
In the same way, Archbishop Smith invites families, too, to listen together to the Word of God. “Through
a careful listening to this Word, families encounter the Lord in their very midst and hear within the depths
of their hearts his assurance of love and call to holiness and service. One way to make this happen is to
create a prayer space in the home. I recall from my days as a parish priest the practice of one family that
created a sacred space in their home by simply placing a candle in the corner of one room. They would
gather daily around the lit candle to offer their spontaneous prayers to God for his blessing upon their
day.”
We, at Edmonton Catholic Schools, invite you to heed the call of Archbishop Smith. As we approach the
season of Advent, we are reminded that Advent is a time of great spiritual preparation as we ready our
souls for the coming of Christ. Advent is an important season in which families can dedicate time each
day to pray and to share the Word of God together, preparing in a powerful way for the coming of Christ.
This Advent Season, like many of the past, will be filled with distractions and priorities which attempt to
take away from our families spiritually during this crucial time. Consider creating a prayer space in your
home by placing an Advent Wreath at the center of your dining table. As a family, gather around the Ad-
vent Wreath, before or after meals, to light the Advent candles, to offer spontaneous prayers, and to lis-
ten to the Word of God. During this Advent season, we hope that you will use these traditional tools with
your family and that God will use them to benefit your family with grace and love.

Celebration of Catholic Education—Parent Feedback
Celebration of Catholic Education Religious Education Parent/Guardian Engagement
Evenings Feedback
On November 1 and 2 the Trustees and Administration of Edmonton Catholic School District were pleased to host parent engagement evenings at
St. Charles Parish and Corpus Christi Parish titled: Celebration of Catholic Education Religious Education Parent/Guardian Engagement Evenings.
Each evening began with the celebration of the Eucharist followed by a presentation and an opportunity for reflection. We were delighted that Arch-
bishop Richard Smith and Bishop Gregory Bittman were able to celebrate these evenings with us. They were joined at our Lord ’s table by the par-
ish priests, deacons, and our District Chaplains. Additionally, we were pleased that, so many community members attended Mass and the program
that followed.
We are happy to share some of the feedback and comments we received following each presentation. Included below are corresponding links to
more information and resources as well as highlights from the presentations.
We asked participants: What is one thing from this evening’s presentation that you enjoyed most?
“The experiences and opinions of the children in the video; they are the principle role in this story. I enjoyed the video and how the young students
understood their Catholic faith and expressed themselves with confidence.”
The video, Growing in the Spirit, was a collaborative effort between Learning Services Innovation and many students from across the school dis-
trict. It focused on asking students to express their thoughts on what Catholic Education meant to them. Growing in the Spirit Video
“I enjoyed learning about the new curriculum and resources available for parents, teachers and the parishes. Knowing what my children will be
learning enables me to help them grow in their faith.”
Growing in Faith, Growing in Christ, the new Religious Education program approved by the Catholic Bishops of Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan,
and the Northwest Territories and developed in collaboration with Catholic educators from across Canada, exemplifies the discipline and rigor with
which the program is delivered. Pearson Canada, the publisher, has developed a school, a home, and a parish website that helps to integrate the
faith into everyday life. Pearson Canada Student-Home Website

“I really appreciate how the Competencies formed through Catholic education are permeated from Kindergarten to Grade Twelve and that teach-
ers are receiving professional development in this area.”
We know that Catholic education means that students are given the opportunity to encounter Christ in all aspects of their learning day, not just in
Religion class. This means that our Catholic faith is permeated throughout all subjects and all activities. The Learner Competencies Formed
through Catholic Education reflect the Alberta Programs of Study from a Catholic education standpoint and change the way that we approach per-
meation. Learner Competencies Formed Through Catholic Education
“I was pleased to see the Archdiocese’s Sacramental Education Initiative. I have children who are passed their sacraments, so this is a document with which I am unfamiliar.”
