Our Mission Our Lady of Mount

Carmel Catholic Parish is one family

in Christ.

We: • Love God and neighbor. • Pray in the celebration of the

Sacraments and receive grace. • Serve sacrificially with time,

talent and treasure. • Proclaim the good news of

Salvation.

Empowered by the Holy Spirit, and with Mama Mary to help us, we journey in hope to Heaven.

DINVE INTIMACY When the Samaritan woman meets Jesus at the well, he offers living water that wells up to eternal life. What is this living water of which Jesus speaks? St. Paul describes it in the second reading: “the love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.”

What a gift! It surpasses all others. It is the gift of God’s own life and love dwelling within us. Only this gift can perfectly sustain and satisfy us. It is the fulfillment of our desires.

The context of the whole passage is marital. In the Scriptures, what happens at wells? When a Hebrew boy and a foreign girl meet at a well, a marriage follows. Moses met his wife at a well. Isaac’s marriage to Rebekah was arranged at a well. Jacob also met his wife Rachel at a well.

The Samaritan woman represents all of us. Christ desires an intimate, loving relationship with us. Do you ever think about your relationship to God in this way?

Thomas Smith, a convert from Mormonism to Catholicism, shares an experience he had one day while going door-to-door trying to spread the Mormon religion. He and his companion went to a poor area of Alabama. They knocked on the door of a shack and were greeted by the bright eyes of an older African-American woman. They told her they wanted to share the message of Jesus Christ with her. She invited them in. They asked if she would like to begin with a prayer or if she would like them to pray. Most of the time the person deferred to the Mormon missionaries. This time was different. The woman bowed her head and began to pray.

“I remember distinctly, as I heard her praying to God, I thought if I looked up I would see Him sitting next to her on her worn couch. This was not just her God, but her best friend. Her dearest companion who had seen her through a lifetime of suffering and prejudice…I knew that she really ‘knew’ him, while I may only know about him. I wanted that kind of intimacy she shared with her Creator.”

Perhaps you identify more with Thomas Smith than the elderly woman who prayed that day. Maybe you can’t pray as that woman did. But you can start to express to God your desire to know Him intimately, to be aware of His loving presence in your life. Give God permission to do whatever needs to be done to bring you to that place, even examining your past mistakes, like Jesus did with the Samaritan woman. Tell him you are ready to set down the water jar, as she did, and turn to Jesus for the living water. “Lord, give me this water, so that I may not be thirsty” any more.
