From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, One candle. This weekend we light the first candle of our Advents wreaths, signifying the beginning of a period of expectation, when the true Light will come into the world and dispel the darkness. The physical darkness that encompasses our land, with the shortness of the days we share, is a perfect accompaniment to this time of Advent, and as we approach the end of this season, our northern hemisphere will experience the lengthening of days. As Advent comes to its end, the light brought into the world by the Christ Child will dispel the darkness of sin and ignorance. Before everyone becomes tired of the steady stream of Christmas music, one of my favorite, and still extremely popular over forty years later, was a song written by Fred Jacobson, and originally sung by Johnny Mathis, When a Child is Born. Its words are worth contemplating, especially as we prepare to celebrate the first coming of Christ as a baby. “A ray of hope flickers in the sky; A tiny star lights up way up high; All across the land, dawns a brand new morn; This comes to pass when a child is born. A silent wish sails the seven seas; The winds of change whisper in the trees; And the walls of doubt crumble, tossed and torn; This comes to pass when a child is born. A rosy hue settles all around; You've got the feel you're on solid ground; For a spell or two, no one seems forlorn; This comes to pass when a child is born; And all of this happens because the world is wait-ing, waiting for one child. Black, white, yellow, no one knows; but a child that will grow up and turn tears to laughter, hate to love, war to peace and everyone to everyone's neighbor. And misery and suffering will be words to be forgotten, forever. It's all a dream, an illusion now; It must come true, sometime soon somehow; All across the land, dawns a brand new morn; This comes to pass when a child is born.” How often do we get caught up in the day to day nonsense? Especially in an age of social media and internet anonymity, where people feel no need to watch what they say and do, when written and spoken words which inflict pain and suffering on others is allowable and normal. Where things of no importance are given top billing, and the opinions of the ill-informed and uneducated are put on equal footing of those of experts, in a parody of democracy. Perhaps it is because those things of true value are ignored, devalued or even mocked, and the mindset of a throw-away culture rules the day, rather than those things which we, as followers of Christ, are really called to value. All these things are part of, and contribute to, the Culture of Death, which St. Pope John Paul II spoke about so frequently; when children are viewed as inconveniences rather than as gifts from God; when we would rather dump money into being entertained or distracted, than being engaged in relationships; when we would rather hang plaques on our walls, which will be thrown away when we are in the grave, rather than work for that which endures. Words of hope, which come to us in a song, reflecting our own hope, not only in the coming of Christ as a child in Bethlehem, but in the birth of every child; in recognizing the image and likeness of God in every child conceived, and every person who passes from this life to eternal life. Instead of listening to the world, and allowing secular voices to change the way we live out our faith, we need to listen to the Voice of Christ, the Word of God, and allow our hearts to be changed, and our eyes to see the world the way God sees it. As those awaiting the Christ Child, we take the Word of God and the Body of Christ with us, to transform our world, to shape the institutions of the world to serve God’s people, to be strengthened by the Holy Spirit, and be allowed to build the Kingdom on earth, as we await the fullness of His Kingdom. As we await that day, that new morning, which will bring an end to pain and suffering, even to death itself, we continue to live our lives in witness, not in denial; in light and not shadows; we live in the joy of life, not in the fear of death. We are a people of the Incarnation, made in the image and likeness of God, and sharing with each other the humanity Christ took upon Himself, and glorified. Pax, Fr. Henry

THE PROMISE OF JUSTICE We are in fairly good company when we ask God for justice. Often enough we hear and agree with the lament of the people of Israel asking God why the wicked prosper. Howev-er, when we call out for justice, we usually want someone to get his or her comeuppance. God’s justice is something other than this, of course. God’s justice comprises a wonderful rightness between God and humankind. Today, Jeremiah looks ahead to a time when a just one will sprout from the shorn-off stump of Jesse of the house and family of David. Life was not fair in Jeremiah’s time. Israel’s kings held the promise of God’s fidelity, but it was difficult to see how God’s promise could be realized through them. Nevertheless, Jeremiah lifts his voice and announces that the Promised One will come. Luke’s Gospel echoes that an-nouncement, and Paul is filled with sturdy encouragement. Primer Domingo de Adviento LA PROMESA DE JUSTICIA Estamos en buena compañía cuando clamamos a Dios por justicia. Con frecuencia escuchamos y estamos de acuerdo con el pueblo de Israel que pregunta a Dios por qué el malo prospera. Sin embargo, cuando clamamos por justi-cia usualmente queremos que alguien reciba el castigo que se merece. Obviamente la justicia de Dios es más que eso. La justicia de Dios abarca una maravillosa rectitud entre Dios y la humanidad. En la lectura de hoy Jeremías avizora un tiempo en el que un justo brotará del tronco de Jesé, de la casa y la fami-lia de David. La vida no era justa en el tiempo de Jeremías. Los reyes de Israel mantenían viva la promesa de la fideli-dad de Dios, pero era difícil ver cómo la promesa de Dios se podía cumplir por medio de ellos. No obstante, Jeremías levanta la voz y anuncia que ya viene el Salvador prometido. El Evangelio de Lucas hace eco de ese anuncio, y Pablo se llena de un gran ánimo. Christmas Giving Tree 2018

Please join us in celebrating the 2018 Christmas Season by participating in the annual Giving Tree held by The Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish Outreach and the TIM 4:12 youth ministry. When taking from the Giving Tree you will receive 2 connected tags. The tags will include the age and gender of the recipient, their clothing sizes, favorite color and 1 item from their own specific wish list!! You may ei-ther purchase the wish list item that the recipient has requested or buy a gift using the additional infor-mation!

Gifts can be dropped off below the Giving Tree before and after all weekend Masses, starting Saturday, No-vember 17th at the 5pm Mass, and ending on Sunday, December 9th after the 1130am Mass (If for any rea-son you cannot drop off your gift during these times, contact the TIM 4:12 group as soon as possible). Kindly return your gift to the Giving Tree, wrapped with the original tags you took off the tree secured to the outside of the package. There will be an additional tree set up in the Parish Center during Religious Education classes for any of the families that find it easier to take from the Giving Tree there. The last day to leave gifts at the Parish Center will be December 5th. We will also accept donations of smaller items that can be combined with the packag-es already received. Anything helps and every donation will be gifted! Scarves, gloves, hats and blankets are always wonderful this time of year! The Food Pantry

We would like to express our appreciation to Mike and Cathy Milano and the volun-

teer who worked on the Thanksgiving Food Drive conducted at Best Market in

Oakdale on November 4th. They collected over 300 bags of groceries which went a

long way in restocking our shelves and helping to provide Thanksgiving for families in

need.

We would also like to thank the parishioners who continue to provide support to the

pantry and the less fortunate both during the holidays and on an ongoing basis. Your

outstanding generosity is truly appreciated.
