The Public Ministry of Christ

As we begin the second phase of Ordinary Time, we reflect again on the public ministry of Christ. In the Gospel (Mark 3:20-35) we encounter Jesus explaining the kingdom of God. He

also emphasizes that His ministry is of divine origin and not the works of Satan. Jesus, as a teacher, will lead people to the truth because His words are truth and salvation.

We also encounter the role of the Virgin Mary in today’s Gospel. Although we don’t see her much in the Gospel of Saint Mark, her role in the public ministry of Christ is a mother who

longs to see her Son. A caring mother who desires Christ’s safety as a common mother would do. However, Jesus will teach that His family will be extended to those who will believe in

Him, if they will do the will of God. The public ministry of Christ is a long period of the proclamation of the kingdom. This is the reason why the Seasons of Ordinary Time becomes

extraordinary, because this is the time in which we learn again of the basic teachings of Christ in our Christian lives.
