70 th Independence Day of India: August 15 Independence Day is an annual observance celebrated every year on 15th of August. India’s Independence Day is a day of great significance for the peo-ple of India. At this day India got freedom from the British rule after long years of slavery. It has been declared as the National Holiday all across the India in order to independently commemorate the independence of country from Brit-ish Empire on 15th of August in 1947. Under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, the people had sacrificed their lives in attaining the freedom for their future generations without worrying about their comfort, rest and freedom. They planned and acted upon various

Independence Movements including violent and nonviolent resistance to get complete freedom. However, later Pakistan was partitioned from India which was accompanied by violent riots, causing mass casualties and disloca-tion of more than 15 million people from their homes. On 15th of August Monday, this year, India will celebrate its 70th Independence Day to pay tribute and remember all the freedom fighters who had contributed a lot and fought for the Independence of India. As per the media report, the Indian prime minister, Narendra Modi, is to launch a program named as “70 Saal Azadi-Zara Yaad Karo Kurbani”, also called “AZADI70” (means, 70 years of independence-Do recall the sacrifices). The aim of this campaign is to make Indian people aware that country is first and individual is secondary as well as re-member those supreme sacrifices made by the great freedom fighters of India during the freedom struggle. There is also a plan to perform a week-long “Tiranga Yatra” in order to motivate people regarding nationalism and patriotism. It will begin on August 15 on the occasion of India’s Independence Day by the members of parliament, state legislatures and other celebrities, carrying the Indian Tricolor Flag. It will take place from Arunachal border (with China) to the border with Pakistan (in Rajasthan, Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir).

The Song of Moses and Miriam (Exodus 15:1-21) 15 Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the LORD: “I will sing to the LORD, for he is highly exalted. Both horse and driver he has hurled into the sea. 2 “The LORD is my strength and my defense[a]; he has become my salvation. He is my God, and I will praise him, my father’s God, and I will exalt him. 3 The LORD is a warrior; the LORD is his name. 4 Pharaoh’s chariots and his army he has hurled into the sea. The best of Pharaoh’s officers are drowned in the Red Sea.[b] 5 The deep waters have covered them; they sank to the depths like a stone. 6 Your right hand, LORD, was majestic in power. Your right hand, LORD, shattered the enemy. 7 “In the greatness of your majesty you threw down those who opposed you. You unleashed your burning anger; it consumed them like stubble. 8 By the blast of your nostrils the waters piled up. The surging waters stood up like a wall; the deep waters congealed in the heart of the sea. 9 The enemy boasted, ‘I will pursue, I will overtake them. I will divide the spoils; I will gorge myself on them. I will draw my sword and my hand will destroy them.’ 10 But you blew with your breath, and the sea covered them. They sank like lead in the mighty waters. 11 Who among the gods is like you, LORD? Who is like you— majestic in holiness, awesome in glory, working wonders?

The Song of Moses

The Song of Moses is the name sometimes given to the poem which appears in Deuteronomy 32:1–43 of the Hebrew Bible, written/orated just prior to Moses' death on Mount Nebo. The Song is believed by some to have been written down and placed in the Ark of the Covenant at one time,

along with Aaron's staff and the Ten Commandments

According to Deuteronomy 31:16-18, YHWH met with Moses and his nominated successor Josh-ua (Yehoshua) at the "tabernacle of meeting" and told them that after Moses' death, the people of Israel would renege on the covenant that YHWH had made with them, and worship the gods of the lands they were occupying. YHWH told Moses to write down the words of a song and teach it to the community, so that it would be a "witness for Me against the children of Isra-el" (Deuteronomy 31:19). Deuteronomy 31:22 states that Moses did as he had been instructed, and in Deuteronomy 31:30 he then "spoke in the hearing of all the assembly of Israel the words of

this song until they were ended".

12 “You stretch out your right hand, and the earth swallows your enemies. 13 In your unfailing love you will lead the people you have redeemed. In your strength you will guide them to your holy dwelling. 14 The nations will hear and tremble; anguish will grip the people of Philistia. 15 The chiefs of Edom will be terrified, the leaders of Moab will be seized with trembling, the people[c] of Canaan will melt away; 16 terror and dread will fall on them. By the power of your arm they will be as still as a stone— until your people pass by, LORD, until the people you bought[d] pass by. 17 You will bring them in and plant them on the mountain of your inheritance— the place, LORD, you made for your dwelling,

the sanctuary, Lord, your hands established.

18 “The LORD reigns for ever and ever.” 19 When Pharaoh’s horses, chariots and horsemen[e] went into the sea, the LORD brought the waters of the sea back over them, but the Israelites walked through the sea on dry ground. 20 Then Miriam the prophet, Aaron’s sister, took a timbrel in her hand, and all the women followed her, with tim-brels and dancing. 21 Miriam sang to them:

“Sing to the LORD,

for he is highly exalted.

Both horse and driver

he has hurled into the sea.”

Persecution of Christians from the 1st Century to the present time –10

Spain: Red Terror

The Second Republic proclaimed in 1931 attempted to establish a regime with a separation between State and Church as it had happened in France (1905), where Church had to finance itself, had full responsibility and freedom to elect its own bishops, and had to foster religious edu-cation outside formal schooling, unlike the Spanish Monarchy up to 1931. When established, the Republic passed a number of laws that prompted big progress in education, but it also challenged the power of Church, impregnating virtually all levels of life in Spain, and en-trenched values and traditional public ceremonies. The different Church institutions shifted towards ever more Manichaean positions, present-ing the situation resulting from the proclamation of the 2nd Republic as an anti-Catholic, Masonic, Jewish, and Communist international con-spiracy that heralded a clash between God and atheism, chaos and harmony, Good and Evil. The Church's high-ranking officials like Isidro Goma, bishop of Tudela, reminded their Christian subjects of their obligation to vote "for the righteous" (specific right and far-right options), and their priests to "educate the consciences. A like catastrophist approach is attested since way earlier, in 1912, when the bishop of Almería José Ignacio de Urbina (founder of the Nation-al anti-Masonic and anti-Semitic League) announced 'a decisive battle that must be unleashed' between the "light" and "darkness. Since the early stages of the 2nd Spanish Republic, far-right forces imbued with an ultra-Catholic spirit attempted to overthrow the Republic by violence. Carlists, Africanistas, and Catholic theologians fostered an atmosphere of social and racial hatred in their speeches and writings. Their action, as well as further political and ideological confrontation paved the way to the Spanish Civil War and a planned extermination conceived by the ultra-Catholic military coupists (July 1936). Persecution of Catholics mostly, before and at the beginning, of the Spanish Civil war (1936–1939), involved the murder of almost 7,000 priests and other clergy, as well as thousands of lay people, by sections of nearly all the leftist groups because of their faith. During the Spanish Civil War of 1936–1939, and especially in the early months of the conflict, individual clergymen and entire religious com-munities were executed by leftists, which included communists and anarchists. The death toll of the clergy alone included 13 bishops, 4,172 diocesan priests and seminarians, 2,364 monks and friars and 283 nuns, for a total of 6,832 clerical victim. In addition to murders of clergy and the faithful, destruction of churches and desecration of sacred sites and objects were widespread. On the night of 19 July 1936 alone, some fifty churches were burned. In Barcelona, out of the 58 churches, only the Cathedral was spared, and simi-lar desecrations occurred almost everywhere in Republican Spain. Exceptions were Biscay and Gipuzkoa where the Christian Democratic Basque Nationalist Party, after some hesitation, supported the Repub-lic while halting persecution in the areas held by the Basque Government. All Catholic churches in the Republican zone were closed.[citation

needed] The desecration was not limited to Catholic churches, as synagogues and Protestant churches were also pillaged and closed. Some

small Protestant churches were spar.

The terror has been called the "most extensive and violent persecution of Catholicism in Western History, in some way even more intense than that of the French Revolution."[118] The persecution drove Catholics to the Nationalists, even more than would have been expected, as these defended their religious interests and survival.

Nazi Germany

Hitler and the Nazis had some support from Christian communities, mainly due to a common cause against the anti-religious Communists, as well as to mutual Judeophobia and antisemitism. Once in power, the Nazis moved to consolidate their power over the German churches and bring them in line with Nazi ideals. Some historians say that Hitler had a general covert plan, which some say existed even before the Nazis' rise to power, to destroy Christianity within the Reich, which was to be accomplished through control and subversion of the churches and to be completed after the war. The Third Reich founded their own version of Christianity called Positive Christianity which made major changes in its interpretation of the Bible which said that Jesus Christ was the son of God, but was not a Jew and claimed that Jesus despised Jews, and that the Jews were the ones solely responsible for Jesus's death. Thus, the Nazi government consolidated religious power, using allies to consoli-date Protestant churches into the Protestant Reich Church. The syncretist project of Positive Christianity was abandoned by 1940. Like other intelligentsia, Christian leaders were sometimes persecuted for anti-Nazi political activities. Between 1939 and 1945, an estimated 3,000 members, 18% of the Polish clergy, were murdered for suspected ties to the Polish Resistance or left-wing groups, or for sheltering Jews (punishable by death). Outside mainstream Christianity, Jehovah's Witnesses were targets of Nazi Persecution, for their refusal to swear allegiance to the Nazi government. Many Jehovah's Witnesses were given the chance to swear allegiance to the state, but few agreed. Over 12,000 Witnesses were sent to concentration camps, and estimated 2,500–5,000 died. Vatican to release ‘St Teresa’ stamp The Vatican will anticipate the canonisation of Blessed Teresa of Calcutta with a special postage stamp, which will be re-leased on September 2, two days before Pope Francis officially declares her a saint. The Vatican Philatelic and Numismatic Office announced the stamp’s release on Aug 5 and distributed initial images of it. The 95-cent stamp features a wrinkled but radiant Mother Teresa smiling in her blue-trimmed, white sari. Overlaid on the design by Patrizio Daniele is another image of her holding the hand of a small child. The philatelic office said it would print and sell a maximum of 150,000 sheets of 10 stamps each. “Frail but equally determined in her vocation, Mother Teresa loved God and the church with great strength, simplicity and extraordinary humility, glorifying with her life the dignity of a most humble service,” said the brochure announcing the stamp’s release. “She was a humble messenger of the Gospel and of Christ’s love, known as ‘a small pencil in the hands of the

Lord,’ doing her work quietly and always with great love,” it said. “She assisted the poor, the sick and the abandoned with tireless dedication, offering smiles and simple gestures, finding strength to persevere with her vocation through prayer and trust in God.”

Dancing their way into record books One of the oldest Christian traditional art forms in Kerala may find its way into the record books soon. ‘Margam Kali,’ which has close ties to the early Christian traditions of Kerala, will be performed by 1,000 women at the annual feast of Our Lady of Assumption Forane Church, a Latin Christian church at Vlathanka-ra, near Neyattinkara. “It’s their dedication to Our Lady. The performance will likely make it to the record books,” church vicar Fr Anil Kumar S M said. The feast will be held from August 6 to August 15, and the performance is slated to be held at 6 pm on August 6. “Southern Kerala does not have a Margam Kali tradition as such. So we roped in wom-en from the rural areas and trained them,” he said. According to church officials, the biggest mass Margam Kali performance so far featured only 600 women. Our Lady of Assumption Forane Church comes under Neyyatinkara Diocese and traces its history to the 18th century. Till 1940, the prayers were recited in Tamil and the Holy Mass in Latin. For the Margam Kali performance, the church has roped in a coach who has trained 15 women. These fifteen women will in turn associate with the 33 family units under the church to train the rest, The New Indian Express reported. “Participants right from eight to eighty-year-old will be part of the event,” Fr Anil Kumar said. Another big attraction of this year’s festivities is an exhibition of about 30,000 rosaries from 64 countries. Curtains will come down on the feast on August 22. (Source: Matters India)

French Catholics, Muslims join in prayer to mourn priest Churches across France opened their doors to Muslims today to join in prayer with Catholics following the jihadist murder of a priest, the latest in a string of attacks. More than 100 Muslims were among the 2,000 faithful who packed the Gothic cathedral of Rouen near the Normandy town where two jihadi teenagers brutally murdered 85-year-old Father Jacques Hamel. “This morning we extend a special welcome to our Muslim friends,” Rouen Archbishop Dominique Lebrun said in his homily. “I thank you in the name of all Christians. In this way you are affirming that you reject death and violence in the name of God.” Outside the cathedral a few policemen and soldiers stood guard but did not conduct searches, seeking to reassure a jittery population after the second jihadist attack in less than a fortnight. The priest’s murder sparked renewed recriminations over perceived security lapses after the Bastille Day truck massacre in southern Nice claimed 84 lives. Both of the 19-year-olds attackers — Adel Kermiche and Abdel Malik Petitjean — had been on intelligence services’ radar and had tried to go to Syria. And the jihadist killing of a priest at his altar on Tuesday also prompted fears of possible tensions between religions in the officially secular country.

The most poignant moment of Sunday’s mass in Rouen was the sign of peace, a regular part of the liturgy when the faithful turn to greet each other in the pews, either shaking hands or kissing. Archbishop Lebrun used the moment to step into the congregation and greet Muslim leaders attending, as well as three nuns who were at the church in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray when Hamel had his throat slit. Prime Minister Manuel Valls called today for a new “pact” with the Muslim community in France, Europe’s largest with around five million members, as reported in the media. “Islam has found its place in France… Contrary to the repeated attacks of populists on the right and far-right,” he said. “This intolerable rejection of Islam and Muslims… Must be combatted — and it is — with the greatest strength,” he said. Also today, dozens of prominent Muslims published a joint letter warning that “the risk of fracturing among the French is growing every day.” The signatories, which included academics as well as medical professionals, artists and business leaders, wrote: “We Muslims were silent because… Religion is a private affair in France, (but) we must speak now because Islam has become a public affair and the current situation is intolerable.” The letter, published in the Jour-nal du Dimanche weekly, pledged: “We, French and Muslim, are ready to assume our responsibilities.” Muslims also attended Catholic masses in Italy, notably at Rome’s Santa Maria di Trastevere church in response to a call by the Sant’Egidio community known for its international mediation efforts.
