From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Every Spring throughout the Archdiocese of Seattle (Western Washington) Catholic

parishes and faith communities turn our attention to the Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA).

This yearly effort represents one of three main dimensions of our calling as disciples of

Jesus to practice Stewardship of Treasure—1) our parish dimension, 2) the

archdiocesan dimension, and 3) the national and global dimension. Every Fall we ask

households and families at OLG to renew their commitment to financially supporting

the life and mission of our own parish community. In addition, various collections are taken up annually as the

liturgical year unfolds. These collections, six in all, support a variety of national and global efforts—e. g., Catholic

Relief Services, the Catholic Home Missions, the Peter’s Pence Collection, World Mission Sunday, etc.—whereby the

Catholic Church strives to bring the message of the Gospel and the love of Jesus to our brothers and sisters in the

human family throughout the USA and abroad who face great and urgent needs.

But there is also the reality of our being a parish who is a member of a larger Catholic Church throughout Western

Washington, and we also have a call and a responsibility to financially support the life and mission of this

Archdiocesan Catholic Church. This Archdiocesan Church provides ministries and services that benefit its member

parishes and the wider society of which we are a part, but ministries and services that none of its member parishes

could supply all by themselves alone—formation for seminarians and deacon Candidates, training for Lay Ecclesial

Ministers, helping the poor and the needy through Catholic Community Services, CYO camps and activities, Catholic

Schools, to name just a few. In all, over 60 different ministries and services are supplied via funds donated to the ACA.

I ask, I hope and I pray that all of our households at OLG will generously support the 2020 ACA. Pledge information

will soon be coming to you in the mail, if it has not already arrived, and opportunities to make your pledge will be

provided in the coming weeks. The ACA goal for OLG this year is $82,212. As you know, if we can meet and exceed

this goal, all funds contributed by OLG households above this amount will come back to OLG to be used for a project

to benefit our own parish community. We are hoping this year for a rebate that will allow us to fund increased

ministry to our youth and young adults at OLG. OLG has always succeeded in meeting and exceeding its ACA goal and

has always earned a sizeable rebate as a result. Please help us do so again this year by joining me in supporting the

2020 Annual Catholic Appeal.

God bless you all,

Fr. Kevin

Looking For Creative Activities For Families To Do At Home During

COVD-19 - Here Are Some Suggestions

Many parents and guardians have shared that they are working with their kids 24/7 with schoolwork and trying to keep them occupied during the days of staying at home. If you are running out of ideas, here are some fun ways two stay connected as a family from Lauren Nowicki.

Create your own puzzle - You don’t even need a pair of scissors to make your own puzzle, if you already have puzzles at home. All you need are crayons, markers or paint. Create your own puzzle by simply using the other side of a puzzle you have (the blank carboard side) to draw or paint your own pictures. First, you’ll need to put the original puzzle together, then carefully flip it over. Draw your complete picture, take picture of it to reference, then break the puzzle apart and build it back using your image instead. Make it even more difficult by drawing on the separate pieces first, then trying to put the puzzle together without knowing what it will look like. This activity is good for all ages, as young children can just color the pieces any way they want. Celebrate as a family when you have completed your puzzle.

Make your own stress ball - COVD-19 can cause stress and a fun activity that can help each family member is to make their own stress ball. All you need for this activity is some flour or corn starch, a balloon and a funnel. Start by stretching out the balloon, then stick the funnel in the opening and put in the flour or corn starch. You may need to tap the sides of the funnel to help the flour move down the funnel. Once the balloon is filled with the flour or corn starch it will not expand much, then simply tie it. You may want to consider placing it inside another balloon to make the exterior stronger. Once the stress ball is made, kids can use a permanent marker to make a silly face or another image that will stretch out when

the balloon is squeezed. Continued ͢

This Week’s Readings at Mass Introducing the Trinity

• Acts 6:1-7 - The need of assistants • 1 Peter 2:4-9 - Living stones • John 14:1-12 - Last discourse: the way, the truth and the

life

Questions of the Week

1. Have you ever felt an invitation to trust to “not let your heart be troubled”, even though you sensed there was something troubling on the horizon?

2. Which person of the Trinity is it easiest for you to relate to: the Father, Jesus or the Holy Spirit? Why?

Create a “Happiness” box - Make a family “Happiness” box as a way of coping with being at home and not seeing friends as much as you would like. A happiness box is a great resource for when you feel worried, anxious or scared. Decorate an old shoe box as a family, using bright colors, smiley faces, suns and other things such as family photos. Begin to fill the box with things that make each family, member happy; pictures of family vacations, letters from loved one, write favorite jokes, etc. Tell each family member that whenever they feel sad or anxious to go into the “Happiness Box” to feel better.

Good News Page

Teacher Appreciation Day was marked with an historical event at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish. As we are adhering to staying home and staying safe during the COVD -19 pandemic, to honor our teachers and catechists challenged us to think outside of the box, and behold, we decided to have

a Teacher Appreciation Car Parade! Our car parade maintained a safe distance for all who participated, as safety was important. Fr. Kevin Duggan along with staff, teachers and catechists assembled in our north parking lot with signs to greet their students and parish members. Some even dressed up in costume! Parents and guardians started arriving at 4:00 p.m. with their horns honking, cars decorated, and signs showing their appreciation of Our Lady of Guadalupe School and parish and the teachers and catechists that serve with commitment, dedication and passion. Fun was had by all!

Our Teacher Appreciation Car

Parade Was A Wonderful Success!

Report From Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference

This past April the Conference set a new monthly record on assistance delivered both financially & number of people helped. The whys: COVID-19 shut-down a major driver – we focused on what’s important (i.e., rents, rents, rents). We have a strong partnership with the West Seattle Food Bank, the Westside Interfaith Network (WIN), and growing relationship with SVdP Case Management. Vincentians are taking on a greater solution provider role, making referrals and connections with other agencies and organizations. Our fund raising effort stepped up with modest success; donations are being supplemented by grant money; and a contribution by Holy Rosary. And finally a major shout out must go to our very generous Parish Donors and for the most excellent support we receive from Parish Staff. The good news – I believe we can do even better for “nobody is as good as all of us”.

COVID-19 Assistance: Ways to Give and Get Help

With the “Stay Home, Stay Healthy” order in place through the beginning of May and school cancelled until the fall, many of us find ourselves in difficult situations. Homeschooling, stress, isolation, layoffs, financial strain, health concerns, and more are the new challenges we are facing in this difficult time. Know that you are not alone. We are here to support the community in any way we can. To that end, we are continually adding to our new COVID-19 Assistance page: https://olgseattle.org/covid-19-assistance Whether you need assistance, want to lend a hand or both, we’ve got resources for you. We have also included prayers and reflections to strengthen you on the journey. Have a resource to share? Send it to Jennifer at [email protected].

Youth Migrant Project Is On!

The Youth Migrant Project summer mission trip for teens (graduating 8th graders through graduating seniors) is moving ahead! We will be accepting applications and preparing for a week of service in the Skagit Valley from August 10-14. This program, in its 5th year at OLG, gives youth a chance to learn about migrant life by visiting the camps, working in the fields, and distributing food through the Tri-Parish Food Bank. We will join with youth from St. Anne, St. James and St. George. We will continue to monitor updated health advice as we proceed. Even if the regular program isn’t possible in its entirety, we hope to do something to assist the essential farmworkers and their families as they labor to put food on our tables! Applications are due by Sunday, May 31. Email Jennifer for more information ([email protected]).

50th Anniversary Celebration

You are encouraged to continue to celebrate the 50th ANNIVERSARY OF EARTH DAY throughout the year. During this pandemic, interest in birdwatching has soared as bored Americans notice a fascinating world just outside their windows. The trend coincides with peak migration for hundreds of species and nesting season, giving newfound birders a front-row seat to some of nature’s biggest shows. Birds are their most active — and noisy — now! Download the National Audubon Society’s bird identification app to learn who lives in your neighborhood.

Harry Langen Turns 90!! Happy Birthday Harry

As I stumble into my ninth decade

(as my kids say) I have never felt

more loved, blessed, and humbled

than thru the experience of my

birthday Tuesday, April 28th. The well wishes from so many

folks who I knew and many I have not met. The later are the

ones that blew me away and humbled me. I have often

wondered what God had in mind 90 years ago when He put me

on this earth. I think that maybe I am having a notion of

understanding. In turn may I say thank you to all of you,

especially to all the 396 viewers Sunday who witnessed the

blowing of a well guarded secret of my birth sung in familiar

verse following the video Mass on April 26th , and ask God to

bless you as he has blessed myself and Gloria, also in her ninth

decade.

Our Lady of Guadalupe, keep a special place in your heart for all

the folks of this parish family.

“OLG: Many Parts, One Body”

This week we celebrated our wonderful teachers! Check out the website and Facebook for pictures on the Teacher Appreciation page. Thank you to all who came out to cheer them on in the car parade and show our OLG love! We also kicked off #GivingTuesdayNOW, a giving campaign that is allowing us to accept donations online with reduced processing fees. Please help bridge the gap for our school and families in need due to COVID19. We are in the midst of registrations for next year with solid class sizes but we know there are still challenges ahead for many. Thank you also to our in-parish school families for confirming their parish status to help responsibly steward our resources.

This weekend kicks off the 2020 Annual

Catholic Appeal in our parish — help us

meet and exceed our goal for our parish

project!

This year’s Annual Catholic Appeal has us reflect upon A Future Full of Hope: Passion for our Faith,

Promise for our Future, Care for our Community, and Love for our Family.

The Annual Catholic Appeal goal for our parish is $82,212. As a reminder, any amount in excess of the goal will come back to the parish. If we do not meet our goal, the parish will need to make up the shortfall out of our budget. Last year we committed to using the rebate towards paying off the debt. We also promised if we exceeded the goal, and were able to pay off the debt, we would use this year’s funds towards something new.

Based on parish surveys, we know that ministry and outreach with youth and young adults is needed. We are excited to announce that dollars received in excess of the goal will be used to expand our work with this population by increasing staff hours to include an outreach focus that would be targeted towards high schoolers and young adults in an intentional way.

Our Lady of Guadalupe is such a wonderful, generous and supportive community, and we are proud to say we have exceeded our goal every year!!

Please prayerfully consider giving to the needs of our Archdiocese as we con-duct the 2020 Annual Catholic Appeal over the next four weeks. Some of you have already made your donation, and we thank you! Your gift helps support more than 60 ministries and services throughout Western Washington.

Because of the current situation, there are three simple ways to for you to donate:

• Mail the pledge card you received in the mail this past week. • Go online to www.seattlearchdiocese.org/donate to make a secure

pledge or gift. • Call 1-800-809-4921

**Please note you are an OLG parishioner when pledging or giving
