From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Please accept my sincerest thanks for the many kind and thoughtful expressions of congratulations and support so many of you have extended as I recently crossed the milestone of my first year here as pastor of OLG. No question about it, this has indeed been quite a challenging first year, perhaps the most challenging first year I have ever had as a priest and pastor. Most of all, of course, this is because of the coronavirus pandemic that has had such a huge effect upon us all. But it is precisely in light of the challenges that COBVID-19 has confronted us with that I am so grateful for, and touched by, all the many expressions of support, assistance and encouragement that parishioners here at OLG have shown throughout this past year, and especially since the pandemic began and all the many constraints started confronting us. For this reason, while it has certainly been a most difficult first year in its own way, it has not been a year that has been at all without its blessings, joys and gifts—quite the contrary. May the coming year give us all the grace and wisdom needed to respond in the best way to the challenges that will continue to confront us, and to know more deeply through the mutual help we offer to one another, that the Lord Jesus himself is in our midst with his saving power.

As we move through July and onward into August, just a word abut a slight modification to our weekly Mass schedule. For the foreseeable future, our Weekend Mass schedule will remain the same—a 5:30pm “Open” Vigil Mass on Saturday evenings, and a 10:00 a.m. Live-streamed Mass on Sunday mornings. (The “open” Vigil Mass will permit the gathering of limited numbers of parishioners and will require prior sign ups. If you wish to attend any of these open Vigil Masses be sure to sign up for the one(s) you plan to attend. The sign-up deadline for any of these open Masses is 4:30 p.m. on the Thursday immediately prior to the Mass you wish to attend. Remember too that the wearing of facemasks and the observance of social distancing is required for all who attend any of these Open Masses.)

Starting in August, however, our weekday Mass schedule will undergo a slight change. Since the COVID-19 shutdown first began, we have been offering a live-streamed Mass on Tuesday mornings at 9:00 a.m. each week. Beginning in August, however, this Tuesday morning Mass will be discontinued. The reasons for this are two-fold. First, I have received a request from Providence Mount Saint Vincent (PMSV) for some increased assistance with their morning Mass ministry, and the only way I can accommodate their request is to scale back slightly here at OLG with regard to my morning Mass routine. Second, for the eight months I was here at OLG prior to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic we had no Tuesday morning Mass at OLG. We started offering Mass on Tuesdays in part because it helped to make up for all the many plans and activities that we had been forced to cancel and curtail. Now, due to increased weekend opportunities for Mass, and because of my increased assistance at PMSV, we deemed it best to scale back a bit on our Tuesday schedule at OLG.

God bless you all,

Fr. Kevin

BUSINESS OF THE WEEK

Mass Prayer Cards Did you know that it has been a long-standing Catholic tradition to ask for a Mass to be celebrated on behalf of another person who is sick, who has died, or who is in need of prayer in other ways? The Mass is the best way Catholics pray and it is a special way to offer prayers on behalf of another person. In addition, our parish has beautiful prayer cards that can be sent to the person or their family, informing them of the special Mass. There is no cost, although many make a small donation ($15 and up). For more information, contact the Parish Office.

Celebrating The Sacrament Of Reconciliation

Even though we are limited in our ability to celebrate certain sacraments at this time, Fr. Kevin is still available to hear confessions by appointment. Please call the Parish Office, 206-935-0358 or email Fr. Kevin at [email protected].

Need A Space For Quiet Reflection?

Consider walking our parish labyrinth in our Peace Garden. A labyrinth is an ancient spiritual tool of transformation and support. It also can be a devotional tool that can bring new possibilities to your daily life. A labyrinth is a mild walking exercise that can allow us to experience our soul’s rhythm with God and discover our own soul’s purpose. More information about walking a labyrinth can be found at the kiosk.

• Isaiah 55:10-11 - Triumph of God’s word • Romans 8:18-23 - Destiny of glory • Matthew 13:1-23 - Parable of the seed

Questions of the Week

1. Share about a time when you have witnessed someone open to experience God’s amazing or miraculous growth.

2. At this point in your life, what kind of soil would you say you are?

Let us all celebrate with Julia, and her family, who won the Seymour Kaplan award. Julia is an active member of our OLG parish community and a dedicated member of our faith formation program. Upon graduation, she received the Seymour Kaplan Award which is the only award not solely based on academics, attendance or athletics; rather, recipients are nominated by their peers for their humanitarian work in building relationships and treating everyone with dignity, kindness and respect. Seymour Kaplan dedicated his life to social justice, helping people to overcome prejudice and accept differenced. Julia demonstrates what it looks like to live out the Gospel values of Jesus. Congratulations, Julia!

Pastoral Care Providers in Other Languages Needed!!

St. James Cathedral Immigrant Assistance helps people from all over the world. During this time, for those immigrants in our ESL and citizenship tutoring, we want to make sure they know we are here for them. Towards that end, we are looking for people who are fluent in various languages to help by making monthly check-in calls. We need people fluent in Cambodian, Laotian, or Portuguese to call 1 or 2 people each. These calls are informal, personal, and probably quite short. To help out, contact Chris Koehler at [email protected] for more detailed information.

5 Habits To Continue Once Quarantine Ends

Many of us have adopted several Earth-friendly habits that, if we can keep them, could make a difference in the long run. #4: Keep avoiding needless spending: Our pre-pandemic economy featured many cheap products shipped from across the globe that ended up killing jobs and wasting resources on this side of the planet. We’ve learned that we can survive without many of these “necessities”. More next week…

GET BACK IN THE LOOP!

Due to coronavirus concerns, this year’s Loop the ‘Lupe Obstacle Course 5K will be postponed to Sunday, August 23rd, 2020, starting at 1:00 p.m. We’re adjusting the schedule based on advice from the Governor’s Office and the City of Seattle Parks and Recreation Department. Barring any major setbacks, large gatherings of 50+ people will be allowed in our state by the first of August, so we’re planning on a fun, end-of-summer event with appropriate physical distancing. Money raised from Loop the ‘Lupe

supports a wide range of social service work at OLG, and WE NEED YOU! Sign up for the race at www.loopthelupe.com, follow @loopthelupe on Facebook, and (if you’re just in it for the t-shirt), consider being a stay-at-home “Lounge Chair Looper,” a new option for this year! Questions? Contact Race Director Brian Callanan at [email protected].

We Need Your Photos To Fill Our Church!!

If you have not yet sent in your family/household photo, please do. We plan to use the photos to fill in sections of the church that will not be used, to ensure safe physical distancing. It will provide everyone with a sense of our community gathered in prayer—whether in person or by livestream. Send you photos to [email protected]

Girls to Girls Club Service Fair by Sophia Pedras, OLG Graduate

I am part of a club called Girls to Girls. Our club fundraises to provide high school scholarships for Kenyan youth, particularly girls. In Kenya, the government barely subsidizes high school education. Many families in rural Kenya make less than two dollars a day, which means that many Kenyan students aren’t able to get a secondary education. We know that when girls are able to receive the education they deserve, they are able to take control of their lives and in turn strengthen the economy, healthcare, and gender equality within their country.

This time of required isolation and social distancing has hindered our ability to fundraise, but we still want to have an impact. In response, our club is currently holding a service fair! Our service fair is an opportunity for you to receive a needed service while also having a positive and lasting impact on the world. Our members will do yard work, virtually babysit or tutor, wash cars, or any other odd job you are in need of. One hundred percent of your payment will go to providing scholarships.

You can go to the following link to sign up for a service: https://www.seavuriagirlstogirls.org/service-for-a-cause . If you have any questions or want to know more about our club, don’t hesitate to email me or our club directly, at [email protected]. You can also go to our website: https://www.seavuriagirlstogirls.org to learn more about projects we are working on and to sign up for our bimonthly newsletter.

Thank you for your support, Sophia Pedras, OLG Graduate
