Reflection on the Sunday Readings By Fr. Eamon Tobin Our first reading is a concrete example of a person persevering intercessory prayer, which Jesus speaks about in the Gospel. Both readings also speak about the justice and mercy of God. The second reading is a baptismal instruction in which Paul describes the effects of the Resurrection of Christ in the lives of believers. Let us listen to God’s Word to hear what it is he wants to say to us in these readings today. Beloved, in the Gospel passage (Luke 11:1-13), the disciples asked: “Lord, teach us to pray just as John taught his disciples.” What a holy desire! Accordingly, Jesus taught His disciples the “Our Father” as a pattern of all

prayers: “Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread and forgive us our sins for we ourselves forgive everyone in debt to us, and do not subject us to the final test.” We all need to yearn to pray better, to grow in our prayer life. All forms of proper prayer involve lifting up of our hearts and minds to God. Too frequently, many of us become discouraged and stop praying

because we had prayed for one thing or another and apparently received no answer. Perhaps, it is because of wrong ways of praying. Jesus invites us to pray with persistent and unyielding faith until, if possible, God “gets tired” and grant our request. However, in our First Reading (Gen 18:20-32), Abraham did exactly that: He prayed persistently against the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah: “Will you sweep away the innocent with the guilty?…. Suppose there were fifty innocent people in the city; would you wipe out the place…? Suppose there are only forty five… thirty… twenty…. ten;” but to no avail. How much more persistent could one be! What was the problem? Prayer involves the alignment of wills. In praying, we must align, unite, our human wills with the Will of God. We must never try to control or manipulate God to do our will. It will never work! Christ teaches us to yield to God’s will: “Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven” (Matt 6:10); just as He Himself exemplified during His Passion: “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, thy will be done” (Matt 26:42). Only in God’s will is our peace, reconciliation, success and fulfillment. And we don’t only focus on the material; more importantly, we should pray for spiritual gifts: “If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?" BIBLE VERSES OF THE WEEK: We do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with sighs too deep for words… the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God” (Rom 8:26-27). Tal vez, es debido a maneras equivocadas de orar. Jesús nos invita a orar con fe persistente e inquebrantable hasta que, si es posible, Dios “se canse” y conceda nuestra petición. Sin embargo, en nuestra Primera Lectura (Gen 18:20-32), Abraham hizo exactamente eso: persistentemente oró contra la destrucción de Sodoma y Gomorra: “¿Será posible que tú destruyas al inocente junto con el culpable? Supongamos que hay cincuenta justos en la ciudad?… ¿Supongamos si hubiera cuarenta… treinta… veinte… sólo diez?” ¡Cuánto más persistente podría ser uno! ¿Cuál fue el problema? La oración implica la alineación de las voluntades. Al orar, debemos alinear, unir, nuestras voluntades humanas con la Voluntad de Dios. Nunca debemos tratar de controlar o manipular a Dios para hacer nuestra voluntad. ¡Nunca funcio-nará! Cristo nos enseña a rendirnos a la voluntad de Dios: “Hágase Tu voluntad, Así en la tierra como en el cielo” (Mat 6:10); tal como Él mismo ejemplificó durante Su Pasión: “Padre Mío, si esta copa no puede pasar sin que Yo la beba, hágase Tu voluntad” (Mat 26:42). Solo en la voluntad de Dios está nuestra paz, reconciliación, éxito y realización. Y no solo nos centramos en lo material; más importante aún, debemos orar por los dones espirituales: “Pues, si ustedes, que son malos, saben dar cosas buenas a sus hijos, ¿cuánto más el Padre celestial dará el Espíritu Santo a quienes se lo pidan?” VERSOS BIBLICOS DE LA SEMANA: “No sabemos orar como debiéramos, pero el Espíritu mismo intercede por nosotros con gemidos indecibles…. porque El intercede por los santos conforme a la voluntad de Dios” (Rom 8:26-27).

Ignatius of Loyola was a Spanish Basque Catholic priest and theologian, who co-founded the religious or-der called the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) and became its first Superior General at Paris in 1541.The Jesuit order served the Pope as missionaries, and they were bound by a vow of special obedience to the sovereign pontiff in regard to the missions. Ignatius is remembered as a talented spiritual director. He recorded his method in a celebrated treatise called the Spiritual Exercises, a sim-ple set of meditations, prayers, and other mental exer-cises, first published in 1548.He was beatified in 1609, and then canonized, receiving the title of Saint on 12 March 1622. His feast day is celebrated on 31 July.

ASKING FOR HELP The Beatitudes praise the poor in spirit. One character-istic of those who are poor in spirit is their ability to ask for help; they know when others can provide what they lack. Today’s readings encourage us to practice poverty in spirit by asking God for what we need. What could be more natural than to ask God for good things? God is, af-ter all, the inventor of goodness and the giver of all good things. Asking God for help puts us in conversation with God. These conversations take many forms. The reading from Genesis shows Abraham bantering with God like a skilled negotiator, while Saint Paul’s letter to the Colossians praises God for answering us even when we don’t deserve it. In Saint Luke’s Gospel, Jesus not only gives us words to use in our conversations with God (the Our Father), but also promises that God always listens to our prayers. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

PIDIENDO AYUDA Las beatitudes alaban al pobre de espíritu. Una de las características de quienes son pobres de espíritu es su habilidad para pedir ayuda; ellos saben cuando otros pue-den proveerles lo que les hace falta. Las lecturas de hoy nos animan a practicar la pobreza de espíritu pidiéndole a Dios aquello que necesitamos. ¿Qué podría ser más natu-ral pedir a Dios que buenas cosas? Dios es, después de todo, el hacedor de la bondad y el dador de buenas cosas. Pidiendo ayuda a Dios nos pone en una conversa-ción con Dios. Esta conversación o conversaciones pue-den ser de muchas formas. La lectura del libro del Géne-sis muestra a Abraham negociando con Dios de una ma-nera graciosa, pero como un hábil negociador; por otro lado la carta de san Pablo a los colosenses alaba a Dios respondiéndonos aún cuando no lo merecemos. En el Evangelio de san Lucas, Jesús no solo nos da las pala-bras y frases para usar en nuestras conversaciones con Dios (el Padre Nuestro), sino también promete que Dios siempre escuchará nuestras oraciones.
