Reflection on the Sunday Readings By Fr. Eamon Tobin In the first reading, Moses reminds the Israelites that the law of God is “already in your mouths and in your hearts.” The truth is echoed by the lawyer in the Gospel who readily quotes the law. Jesus, echoing Moses, urges the lawyer to do what he already knows. The compassionate action of the Good Samaritan reveals to us the “image of the invisible God” which Paul speaks about in the second reading. Let us listen to God’s Word to hear what it is he wants to say to us in these readings today En la primera lectura, Moisés les recuerda a los isra-elitas que la ley de Dios “ya está en sus bocas y en sus corazones”.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION There’s a different pace to a summer Sunday, especially on those days when we dream of air conditioning and wave any available paper to stir the air. Yet we persist in gather-ing, even with so many breaks from the usual routines. We distance ourselves not only from routines, but from sched-ules and familiar well-worn paths. These are playful days and contemplative days. We see long-lost friends and visit almost-forgotten places. We have more leisure than any people before in the history of the world, and we need it because our lives are so care-worn and tiring. More of us walk barefoot and look up at the stars or dip our toes in the lake or sea, sing around campfires, read novels on the beach, and eat comfort food with our fingers. We see how beautiful life can be, and are more aware than usual of how God is always breaking in with signs of love. In Genesis today, Abraham and Sarah practice hospitality to their visitors, who turn out to be God dropping in. During the summer months, God practices hospitality in return, inviting us into a season of celebration. Keeping Sunday holy is a good habit to cultivate in these days when our spirits are especially receptive to God’s deep desire for us to know divine love. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. Beloved in Christ, our Gospel Passage (Luke 10:38-42) reiterates listening is crucial in our relationship with God. What God wants to say to us or do for us is far more important than what we want to say to God or do for Him. Many

times, we display activism like Martha and want to do many things for God; but we do not pray or listen to God as Mary did. The Gospel Passage calls for a healthy balance which leans more toward listening and prayer than activism. It means, we should never rely solely on our own human strength. As we know, listening is crucial in any authentic relationship. If you are on a date or you’re with your spouse,

you want to know what the person cares about; listening to you is key. That’s how the person can know your likes and dislikes; the person doesn’t presume your likes and dislikes. This is why Jesus declared Mary’s response as greater than Martha’s. Mary gave Jesus full attention, listening to Him. Martha basically presumed what Jesus wanted, and unintentionally gave Him distracted attention. Just as we are tended to believe about activism, Martha thought she was doing better than Mary and demanded Jesus should ask Mary to come and help her. Jesus handled it very well: “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her.” Let us always first listen to God, hear what He wants, and what He thinks; then we can respond properly. Accordingly, PRAYER is not so much about vocalization or presentation of our petitions for different needs. More importantly, it is about spending time with God just to appreciate God and ponder His beauty and splendor – especially during Holy Hour, Adoration, Visits to the Blessed Sacrament, and through Meditation and Contemplation. BIBLE VERSES OF THE WEEK: “Be still, and know that I am God. I am exalted among the nations, I am exalted in the earth!” (Ps 46:10); “But the LORD is in his holy temple; let all the earth keep silence before him” (Hab 2:20). Vacation Bible School: special thanks to our faith formation coordinators, parish staff and distinguished volunteers for a successful, exciting and very engaging program for our children and young people. We appreciate and thank our parents for bringing our children.

St. Mary Magdalene is one of the greatest saints of the Bible and a legendary example of God's mercy and grace. The precise dates of her birth and death are unknown, but we do know she was pre-sent with Christ during his public ministry, death and resurrection. She is mentioned at least a dozen times in the Gospels. The Gos-pels agree that Mary was originally a great sinner. Jesus cast seven demons out of her when he met her. After this, she told several women she associated with and these women also became follow-ers. Despite the scholarly dispute over her background, what she did in her subsequent life, after meeting Jesus, is much more signif-icant. She was certainly a sinner whom Jesus saved, giving us an example of how no person is beyond the saving grace of God. Mary likely watched the crucifixion from a distance along with the other women who followed Christ during His ministry. Mary was present when Christ rose from the dead, visiting his tomb to anoint his body only to find the stone rolled away and Christ, very much alive, sitting at the place they laid Him. She was the first witness to His resurrection.

Making disciples is not just a nifty idea someone thought up. It is a biblical mandate

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Matt. 28:19

Mate. 28:19

A MINDSET OF SERVICE There’s a lot of traveling, delivering, and visiting going on in our readings today. In Genesis Abraham cares for the needs of three mysterious travelers. The psalm responds, celebrating the kind of righteousness that Abraham practices. Then, in his letter to the Colos-sians, Saint Paul describes his own ministry as almost like a delivery service: he, God’s steward, brings the word of God to their community. Finally, Luke’s Gospel shares the well-known story of Mary and Martha, and the different ways they welcome Jesus into their home. Amid all this coming and going, we are invited to pay attention to the ways we tend to the needs of others. Each of us can ask, How am I present to God and others in my life? Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
