"6 weeks after arriving in Melbourne I secured my first contract position, and I believe that the career coaching I received through CABA was a major contributor to my success.

The support I got from CABA and the local career coaching company was really valuable. They gave really good advice and guidance, and honest feedback through this journey. I would recommend to all ICAEW members or past members to become familiar with CABA’s various support offerings.”

OUR 2015 HIGHLIGHTS

More than 13,000 people came to us for support in 2015, a 135% increase on 2014. We provided grants and donations totalling over £1.1m. Over 1,200 people received personal support. More than 2,000 people took advantage of our personal and professional development courses. Over 4,000 attended our joint events with ICAEW and over 6,000 people used our online tools and advice.

Our career coaching helped people get back into paid employment, and we helped people with practical advice and support to set up their own businesses.

We organised occupational therapy visits and paid for specialist equipment and home adaptations so people could maintain their independence. We helped fund things like respite care, in-home support and help with childcare costs.

For those in emotional distress we made fast referrals to our trained counsellors – eliminating the long wait to see their GP. And, for people struggling with financial issues, we were able to reduce the feelings of fear, stress and anxiety by providing short-term financial assistance. And, for those struggling with debt we worked with them and their creditors to address over £4.5m in collective debt.

“ 2015 was an important year for CABA. And it was a year of action. We spent more money than ever, supporting more people than ever. We launched a range of new services and expanded our support to dependent children and young adults up to the age of 25 years old. And we continued to develop our international presence with a wider range of courses and support across the world.”

HOW WE HELPED… ACA STUDENTS

In 2015 we supported more ACA students than ever through the emotional challenges of exams, relationships, anxiety, depression and more. We helped them to succeed through our personal and professional development courses and webinars. The most requested areas of support were:

PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

We worked with ICAEW on a joint student wellbeing week with webinars and advice on issues such as mindfulness and internal networking. We also delivered workshops and seminars directly to students and within firms as part of their induction programmes.

EMOTIONAL SUPPORT

The number of emotional support enquiries increased by 50%, and the numbers accessing our online, face-to-face and telephone counselling services grew by 35%.

We provided emotional support and counselling to 180 people to help with work and relationship issues, anxiety and depression. We also offered a listening ear for people coping with bereavement.

PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Alongside our existing range of courses, and being aware of the time pressures facing busy professionals, we launched a series of seminars, workshops and webinars giving people the chance to enhance their skills.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

To take the pressure off and enable ICAEW members to regain control we helped 173 individuals with financial assistance: from navigating the benefits system to debt advice and support through grants and donations.

In 2015, 774 past and present ICAEW members contacted us for support – from those early in their careers to established executives, as well as practice and business leaders. We appreciate the continued support from past and present ICAEW members, and in 2015 we were grateful to receive a number of generous legacies and donations totalling over £1.4m.

“ Before I got in touch with CABA, everything was getting a bit much. I was often quite low in mood – it felt like everything was falling apart. I was stuck in the house as I am 86 and have a number of health conditions. There were terrible draughts around the windows and doors and the seals had gone on the old double glazing units on the windows. They became so clouded with the condensation, there really was no view at all. I actually felt ashamed that I wasn’t able to manage. The whole situation made me very anxious. I needn’t have worried though. I found CABA to be a very respectful organisation. They funded the replacement of the damaged double glazing. They also arranged for some painting and minor repairs in the house including a new fuse box as the old one was unsafe. They continue to help with a fuel allowance, which means my house feels cosy and safe again and the regular ongoing contact with my support officer is hugely reassuring.”
