Fall 2018

By Margaret “Sparkles” Spears

I’ve never been accused of being quiet... Or shy for that matter. My natural gift of gab and ‘everyone’s a friend I haven’t met yet’ disposition landed me in a lot of punitive circumstances, especially as a youngster.

Celebrating those qualities was a concept that was laughable to me for many years.... Until I came to Special Friends Camp eight years ago.

The last many years I have had the honor of being Lead Staff and Chaplain at this incredible Camp. Celebrating every camper, volun-teer, and staffer for exactly who they are is something we do daily.

We all come from every imaginable walk of life, all age groups, and each with our own treasure chest of giftings and talents.

One camper can keep a hula hoop going on his arm longer than any of us have ever witnessed with the most amazing smile on his face.

Another camper writes original songs on his harmonica and shares them with us after explaining that the song is about his battle with cancer and is a victory song because he is in remission.

A sweet female camper thrills us each day she comes with her vast and colorful sock collection, and she remembers who gave them to her and when.

Another camper draws the most wonderful artwork reminiscent of the animat-ed Beatles cartoons. He also loves to discuss the Fab Four and knows massive amounts of information about their albums and songs.

A particular tall, quiet, sports minded camper always knows the latest update for the Seahawks and Mariners. If you ask him, he will gladly share the information... And his honest opinion about that information!

Many of our campers have impressive dance moves, bravery that’s off the charts, and above all compassion for their friends and anyone who is hurting.

We have volunteers that are experts in model trains, competitive hula dancers, Eagle Scouts, sousaphone players, opera singers, retired teachers... Staffers that are hockey players, actors, missionaries, football players, writers, artists, teachers... Our group is made up of quiet people, loud people, silly people, organized people, thoughtful people, hardworking people, and most importantly people who have hearts to love!

We spend our days together at the climbing tower, flying through the air on the zip line, playing basketball, swim-ming in the heated pools, drawing, wildly cheering for holes in one made at mini golf, and talking all about it at lunch. We sing songs, tell jokes, do arts and crafts together, have our chapel time, pet horses, visit with therapy dogs, ride our camp train, and best of all we CELEBRATE each other and become truly Special Friends!
