Please welcome our new board of directors for 2017-2018.

I am excited to have them onboard, and look forward to working with the new team that you have elected into position.

Our Board of Directors is charged with maintaining, preserving and enhancing the common assets of our association. In order to perform those duties, our Board depends on committee recommendations and the advice and counsel of experts in various fields of community association management, such as, attorneys, landscapers, insurance specialists and the management company.

When making decisions regarding our community, the Board is expected to consider all facts and factors involved in the issue and make the best business decision possible. Sometimes those decisions may not appear to be in the best interests of all the owners; however, if each owner understood all of the underlying issues that go into making the decision, they would understand that

the board’s choice of action is usually the most practical and well thought out.

In addition to dealing with insurance, maintenance, financial and contractual decisions, the board must also balance their positions on the board with their role as a homeowner. If assessments are increased that means they are increased for them also. If rules are enacted, that means they have to obey them too. Being a board member does not grant one immunity from the responsibilities of living in an association. In fact, serving on the board reflects just how seriously they take that responsibility. So please keep in mind that our board members are actually doing “double-duty” for our community. They serve as board members and neighbors. All who have served and currently serve deserve a heartfelt thank you for all of their contributions to our community!

If you see a maintenance item that needs addressing, please call our office at 480-983-5555 or you are more than welcome to come in and fill out a work order or landscape request form.

Community Corner

This is my last President’s Corner for the Mountaineer. I have had a great two terms serving this community. In the book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon writes that for everything there is a Time a Reason and a Season and I have had my season. When I came

into office there was a need for my skills and expertise, especially for the renovations we accomplished. We received quality work from Global

Prevention Services and many other contractors we hired to provide the necessary services for this community. Our bylaws charge the board with Protecting, Maintaining and Enhancing the Association owned property and that was my only agenda, to protect and serve. I believe when you look at the campus center and front entrance fountain, that is exactly what my Board did. Now my season is past and it is time for new blood to make decisions for this community. I pray for them that they do their very best to serve us.

In Christs service,Gene & Connie Prescott

THEATREBill Wash

The MountainBrook Village Theatre’s performances of The Odd Couple (Female Version) ended its three-day run on Saturday, February 25. The Theatre extends an appreciative “Thank You” to their audiences for attending, and hope you enjoyed the play as much as the actors enjoyed performing and interpreting their characters. Another huge “Thank You” to Bob Carnahan for designing and building the set. And, a special “Thank You” to all the many volunteers (their names are in the program) for the generosity of their time and efforts in helping to make this play the success that it was.

Next year’s play is You Can’t Take It With You, a comedy by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman. Auditions were held on March 8 & 9 to fill 19 rolls (some actors may assume dual roles). Next month’s Mountaineer will announce the names of those who were awarded roles by the play’s Director, Randy Ratcliff.

VOLUNTEERSBuildings and Grounds Committee

There are many residents in MountainBrook Village who had career experiences that could potentially benefit projects within the village. The Buildings and Grounds Committee is seeking VOLUNTEERS to assist the committee with projects assigned to them by the Board of Directors.

This would be an opportunity to be involved within your community and see the inter-workings of your HOA.

Please contact Larry England, Chair of the Buildings and Grounds Committee, at [email protected] to get more information and add your name to the list.

News on Coffee and NewsResidents are invited to attend the weekly Tuesday morning

Coffee and News. The scheduled starting time is 9:00 am.A wonderful benefit is the Fire Department on hand to perform

complementary blood pressure checks. The Fire Dept. arrives about 8:30 am. They usually stay around to perform the checks, but on occasion they are called away for an emergency. Lucky for us they have been on hand to tend to a few in-house medical emergencies. We love our Fire Department!

Each week a board member shares timely updates to inform residents of new or ongoing projects or situations in MountainBrook Village. In addition, Jennifer, our much-

appreciated Lifestyle Director, educates everyone on up-to-the minute information regarding ongoing and upcoming activities in MountainBrook Village. Don’t rule out a ‘teaser’ from Village Voices or something from the next play. Occasionally a guest speaker is invited, and musical entertainment from one of the local schools has been known to delight. The sign up books for free activities are brought to Coffee and News as a courtesy for Coffee and News attendees. In addition, tickets for State Potlucks are usually sold at Coffee and News as their time approaches. Stay flexible, you never know what might pop up!

Don’t forget, if you cannot attend Coffee and News, a recording is uploaded to the MountainBrook Village website!

Another request: Jennifer is looking for VOLUNTEERS to make the Tuesday coffee and tend to the donuts. If we don’t get some VOLUNTEERS, C&Ns could become BYOC (bring your own coffee). Contact her for information.

It’s That Time of Year Again!by BJ Jensen

What time? It`s too early for most of our winter visitors to skip out of MBV to avoid the heat. What can it be? Ah, yes, time for planting! The new plant list is on the website. And for those who want to see what those plants look like, check out one of the beautiful Landscape Books in the office. The books include the plant list, pictures of the plants, Xeriscaping and irrigation information. If you want to get an up close and personal look at the live versions of many of these plants, head for Boyce Thompson Arboretum’s spring plant sale. It starts on March 11th, lasting through March 26th. Take a copy of the new plant list with you. You can use the common name but be sure to have the botanical name available. Take advantage of the BTA Spring Plant sale and enjoy the Arboretum while you are there. You won’t be sorry! PS: Don’t assume that if you see a plant in MBV that it can still be planted; check the new list

Known by many as BTA, the Arboretum is an AZ State Park and home to the Superstition Mountain Master Gardeners who VOLUNTEER their propagating plants, help with plant sales, give directions to visitors, provide many needed hours of VOLUNTEER time for special occasions and projects. They recently planted numerous bare root roses from the Wallace Gardens Collection, a story for another time.

VOLUNTEERSPinal County Sheriff’s Office Citizens on Patrol

The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office has begun accepting applications for the department’s House Watch program which is coordinated by Citizens on Patrol VOLUNTEERS. Homes eligible for the program are those in the unincorporated areas of Pinal County. COP VOLUNTEERS patrol neighborhoods from Queen Valley to the area north of Apache Junction to the county line throughout the year, but during the summer months when seasonal visitors leave, special emphasis is placed on those homes on the house watch.

Residents who wish to have their Arizona home added to the house watch list must complete a form and submit it either in person or by mail to the nearest PCSO substation. Northern Pinal County may obtain a form at the PCSO substation at 5750 S. Kings Ranch Road in Gold Canyon or may download it from the sheriff’s office website at www.pinalcountyaz.gov/sheriff/documents. Simply look for the document labeled HouseWatchForm and download it to a computer. The form may then be printed and completed prior to submission.

Those applying for the program are asked to indicate pertinent information about the residence, the departure and return date, whether there are vehicles on the property, and list anyone who has authorized access to the property while the home is vacant. During their neighborhood patrols, COP VOLUNTEERS will observe the homes on the house watch list and report any recognizable issues to deputies. The homes will only be observed from the street in a patrol car. COP VOLUNTEERS do not go onto the property.

Members of the COP program work year round to assist with crime prevention. They act as additional “eyes and ears” for the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office. COP is part of the PCSO’s community-based policing policy. VOLUNTEERS must complete classroom and tactical driver training provided by PCSO deputies and also complete 40 hours of one-on-one training by senior COP members. VOLUNTEERS are asked to contribute a minimum of 16 hours a month to the program. Seasonal and Canadian residents are welcome to apply.

Those interested in the program can learn more by visiting the COP website: www.pcsocop.com or the program’s Facebook page: Pinal County Citizens on Patrol.

Additional information may be obtained by contacting David Region, Unit Manager, Terri Rozzini at 602-421-1569 or Assistant Unit Manager Jim Walker at 520-463-0170. Information about the program may also be obtained by calling the PCSO substation in Gold Canyon at 520-866-8127.

“A diamond is merely a lump of coal that did well under pressure.” ~ Unknown

We are all Diamonds in the Rough! Our Volunteers are the Jewels that make

MountainBrook Shine!

By Pam Burks MountainBrook Village is a vibrant community filled with fun-loving residents, who have come from many walks of life. Our residents are overflowing with experience, education, skills and talents that should be shared. Our community could sure use those talents. As a Volunteer, you can give, do or share as much or as little as you want. You don’t have to be the one to take charge (we can’t all be chiefs), you can be a participant by attending events to make the efforts of others a success. Be a cheerleader, by encouraging and supporting those that do. All committees are open, if you are not sure what your interest might be, drop in on some of the meetings to get a feel for what is going on.

Here is an example: We are looking for people who enjoy writing articles or short stories for our very own Newsletter, the Mountaineer. Contact Diana Jensen our Editor at 630-546-4018, if you would like to give your creativity a try.

Many events and projects are only once or twice a year. Check out the page in the Mountaineer that lists your Board of Directors, Staff members, Committee and Club Activity Representatives and contact them if you see anything of interest to you.

Remember… “Many hands make light work” John Heywood

A special “Thank you” to all of you who are already volunteering. We hope you will soon be receiving some much-needed help and assistance. So come on and give us a hand, and share your valuable skills, education, and talents. We need you!

Everyone wants to be a Lion!

By Pam BurksEveryone wants to be a Lion because

Lions are Majestic, Strong, Courageous, Protective, Brave, and Believe in supporting the “Pride.” Gold Canyon Lions have strong, courageous and protective characteristics in their members and want “to serve” (the pride,) those who are less fortunate, especially the sight and hearing impaired.

Why not check out what it means “To Serve” and find out who are the “Lions” in your community by attending a Wine and Appetizer Reception on March 20, 2017, at MountainBrook Village Sunset Center, 5782 S. MountainBrook Dr., Gold Canyon, AZ, 85118, 5:30pm-7pm. You will find our members to be fun, talented, energetic, service orientated and anxious to meet you. Maybe you were a Lion in another state, or you are now ready to share your talents? Whatever your motive may be, just take the time to check us out - no pressure; this is just a social gathering to get to know each other and have a good time.

We are looking for new members who want to join an organization that is now celebrating its 100 years of outstanding service. The Lions organization is an international organization and is in 200 countries. Are you feeling the “Pride?”

The great thing about joining Gold Canyon Lions is that we only meet from September to April, and you choose the Service Projects that best suit your talents and skills. I love helping with the Vision Screening Project at our local elementary schools; the children are so sweet and happy to see us. It always amazes me how desperately some of these children need glasses, and we are the first step for them to obtain better sight. Our most fun project is our annual Gold Canyon Lions Casino Night. Our hard work brings the opportunity for attendees to have a fun time, with chances to win exciting door prizes, to bid on valuable prizes in the silent and live auctions. As excitement builds through the night at the gaming tables, slot machines, and auctions you almost forget that it isn’t real gambling. The most amazing part of the evening are the donations raised for our many worthy causes. Our Lions really feel the Pride!

So please consider our invitation to learn more about what it means to be and join Gold Canyon Lions. Please bring a friend. Contact Pam Burks, Gold Canyon Lions’, Membership Chairman, at 480-214-5555 for more information. Hope to see you there!

New MBV Pottery Club Members Display a Sampling of Their Work

Some of the MBV residents who are new to pottery display their creations made from raw clay. Once fired, these pots will be glazed and fired one last time, completing their works of art. MBV and the Pottery Club offer workshops and demonstrations for the beginner and experienced potter. The board has recently purchased new potters’ wheels and kilns, making for a high quality studio experience. Interested MBV residents should stop in at the Fired Arts Building Monday, Wednesday, or Friday to visit and imagine the possibilities. The next introductory workshop/class with available space is being offered on Saturday, April 8 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. All instructors and studio monitors VOLUNTEER their time and talents. To register, call or email John Backes (218-573-3626 or [email protected]). Pictured above (L-R) are Becky Kraft, Jean Dickinson, Carol Royal, Marcy Wilts, Rick Smith, Lori Prats, and Judy Fitzpatrick.

DID NOAH FISH? A Sunday school teacher asked, “Johnny, do you think Noah did a lot of fishing when he was on the Ark? “No,” replied Johnny. “How could he, with just two worms.”

TEXT TO THE NEIGHBOR Hi Fred, this is Alan next door. I have a confession to make. I’ve been riddled with guilt these past few months and have been trying to get up the courage to tell you to your face, but I am at least now telling you in text as I cannot live with myself a moment longer without you knowing. The truth is I have been sharing your wife, day and night when you’re not around. In fact, probably more than you. I haven’t been getting it at home recently, but that’s no excuse, I know. The temptation was just too much. I can no longer live with the guilt and I hope you will accept my sincerest apologies and forgive me. It won’t happen again. Please suggest a fee for usage, and I’ll pay you. Regards, Alan. THE RESPONSE Fred, feeling insulted and betrayed, grabbed his gun, and shot his neighbor dead. He returned home where he poured himself a stiff drink and sat down on the sofa. He took out his phone where he saw he had a second message from his neighbor: THE SECOND MESSAGE Hi Fred, this is Alan next door again. Sorry about the typo on my last text. I expect you figured it out anyway, and that you noticed that darned Auto-Correct changed “wi-fi” to “wife”. That’s technology for you, hey? Regards, Alan

MountainBrook Women’s Investment Club

“We are smarter collectively than we are individually”

MountainBrook ladies, are you interested in the stock market? Would you like to know how to read the reports you receive from your investment accounts? Do you want to understand more about capital gains, dividends, diversification and buy and hold strategies so that you are not leaving the future of your investments entirely in the hands of others? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions (or have others of your own), you may be interested in joining the MountainBrook Women’s Investment Club (MWIC).

The MWIC is a group of women who meet monthly and learn how to analyze stocks by developing their skills to research and invest in the stock market. All while making new friends, gaining insight and experience from others, and enjoying social time together in the MountainBrook Women’s Investment Club.

Whether you have a little, or a lot of experience in investing, this group will help you build your investors’ vocabulary, develop a better understanding of financial resources, as well as provide an opportunity to participate in lively discussions about buying, selling and holding stocks. Many women joined our group with no knowledge of investing at all. The club makes investments that are co-owned and which generally meet or exceed the annual average of the DOW. The cost is reasonable,

the learning is fun, and the camaraderie is abounding. Please consider visiting a meeting to see if the MountainBrook Women’s Investment Club is a good fit for you. If interested, contact Loretta Milton, club Treasurer, for more information. Feel free to call Loretta at 474-9958 or email her at [email protected].

VILLAGE VOICES CHOIRBill Wash

The theme of the Spring Concert, performed on March 10 & 11, was Weather Or Not???. Well, the WEATHER may be unpredictable but our Village Voices Choir is NOT. In fact, the choir is predictably harmonious, melodic and delightfully entertaining. Audiences enjoyed Dancin In The Rain, The Wind Beneath My Wings, William Tells Overture and many other favorites. The Choir thanks you, their audiences for your standing ovations. The success of the concert is due to Patty Sobek, director; Marty Robison, a most gifted pianist; Karen Carnahan who always delights with her narration; and, Jane Gehrt, concert coordinator who brings the concerts together with her creative talents and her "behind the scenes" hard work.

The Village Voices Choir now goes dark until they meet again on Wednesday, September 6 at 1pm in the Superstition Center to begin practice for their Christmas Concert. We wish you all a very pleasant summer.

Have you ever seen a rainbow like this? Leave it toThe Superstitions to amaze us.

14

March 2017

Excess pounds often creep up on us slowly, usually over several years. Here’s a little math: gaining just five little pounds a year over ten years amounts to carrying around an extra 50 pounds. Suddenly you’re not getting a pedicure to treat yourself, but because you can’t comfortably reach your own toes. Your doctor clicks his tongue at you at every visit. Maybe you’ve organized the clothes in your closet by years: in 2000, you wore a size 8; in 2005, a size 12; and by 2017, a size 24.

Okay, you’re gonna get rid of that extra weight, and you jump in with both feet. Here’s a typical scenario: you buy a gym membership, but find yourself going three times a week, then twice, then not at all. Or you sign a contract to purchase special food, delivered straight to your door, but it’s so hard not to augment that diet food with some of the goodies that you buy for your spouse, who’s not on a diet. Or your doctor has put you on a restricted diet, but it’s so boring, and you feel so deprived! So, you change diets—or you change doctors! And the weight continues to creep up, which is not the direction that you want.

You’re far from alone. Most people who try to lose weight by themselves fail miserably—that is, they fail and become even more miserable, which can lead to eating even more junk food.

What’s missing from the scenario above? Group support. Getting together with people who share your goals and your struggles; who can help you to be accountable through weekly weigh-ins; who praise you when you’ve been successful, and who encourage you when you’ve had a setback. TOPS Club Inc. offers such group support. TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) is a non-profit, international weight loss support group that’s been helping people to take off and keep off pounds since 1948. TOPS doesn’t push diets, which always have a start and an end

(after which nearly everyone gains the lost weight back), but encourages changing one’s lifestyle. TOPS is also affordable: $32 membership per year, plus chapter dues, which are usually about $5 per month or less.

Barbara Cady, president of TOPS, says that if you are overwhelmed by making healthy eating and fitness choices and not losing the weight you want, there is another avenue to explore. “Think of smaller, more sustainable steps,” she said. TOPS members are proof that a permanent change, taken on bit by bit, can translate into significant and long-lasting weight loss.

Try this strategy: cut 100 calories daily, and burn 100 calories daily. What, you don’t think such small changes can make any real difference? Think again: by using this cut and burn strategy, you could lose up to 20 pounds over the course of one year. Barb Cady has issued a challenge to all TOPS members to cut and burn until they lose a collective million-pound loss for 2017. That’s 500 tons!

Here are a few tips from TOPS on cutting and burning 100 calories each day.

Calorie Cutting TipsCan’t give up your morning bagel? Eat only half. And if you can still

hear that half a bagel calling your name, wrap it up and freeze it, or even throw it away.

Skip the cream and sugar and flavor your coffee with cinnamon.Flavor a baked potato with salsa and fat-free Greek yogurt instead of

butter and sour cream.Leave four bites on your plate.Instead of drinking a full glass of juice, add just a splash of juice to

sparkling water.Calorie Burning TipsGo for a one-mile walk.Watching TV? Walk in place during commercials for a combined total

of 25 minutes.Climb up and down the stairs for 15 minutes. Vacuum or scrub the floor for 25 minutes.Buy a set of resistance bands and aim for 25 minutes of resistance

exercises. Are you interested in seeing how TOPS can help you lose that

weight? We’d like to see if there’s enough interest in the MountainBrook community to start a weekly chapter. All you need are at least four people, a place to meet and a scale, and TOPS will help you with the rest.

Check out TOPS by going to www.tops.org. Contact Area Captain Valerie Kellogg at [email protected] or on her cell phone at 480-250-6172. She’ll be working with MountainBrook to see if there’s interest in getting a chapter started.

Fairway Vista's HOA I regret that I missed my February report deadline for

the Mountaineer. We had a great turnout at the February 4th annual meeting and great interactions with the homeowners. Thank you, homeowners, for attending and giving your input to the board. We are here for you. Elections for board members were held and all ballots counted to retain John Scharrer, and Al Brinkman for another year. Wayne Schmidt and I still have another year to serve based on last year’s voting. We regret to lose Gordon Gavin as a solid part of our team. We wish Gordon the best and now know he can truly relax. We welcome Harry “Hank” Bowman as a write-in to replace Gordon. Harry is a full-time active Fairway Vista homeowner since 2015. Harry comes to us with an impressive work history and background that will be an asset to our community. WELCOME HARRY! Respectfully, Gene Menne

Book Discussionby Peggy Malsom

Jodi Picoult is a perennial favorite author of the MBV Book Discussion Group. Join us Wednesday, April 12 at 1pm in the Mesquite Room when Stanley and Emily York will lead the discussion for Picoult’s book Small Great Things. There are never easy answers to the questions this author poses. Small Great Things presents a moral dilemma that will question ideas you may have taken for granted about race, power and privilege in America today. This thought provoking novel is based on a true story. One reviewer calls it “the most important novel Jodi Picoult has ever written.” Another says it “puts its finger on the very pulse of the nation we live in today.” And because it is Picoult, look for her trademark didn’t-see-it-coming plot twist. This is our last Book Discussion of the season. Bring your suggestions for the books you would like to read next year. Your input is important and maybe, just maybe, some decisions will be made. See you there.

Bocce Ball Great News! We have new Bocce Ball Courts! If you want to make

new friendships, have fun and hear laughter, then come to the Bocce Ball Courts on any Monday, Wednesday, or Friday from 9:30 am to 11:30 am. You need not be experienced to play.

Renovation should be completed mid-December. We will begin playing on Wednesday, December 14th. Our thanks to the “Building & Grounds Committee and to the Board for approval of the renovation of our Bocce Ball Courts. For additional information, please contact Carol Adkins at (303) 881 4857.

Acrylic and Mixed Media ContemporaryI look at things in the abstract, the shades, textures and colors.

Nature really inspires. After 30 years of owning and operating retail art galleries in Des Moines, Iowa and Tampa, Florida, I retired to Florida to paint. After 13 years, I was moved to come west to Gold Canyon to explore the southwest. Art has been my passion since I studied it at Drake University. Over the years, I have been in many one-man shows, group shows and museum shows. I have no preconceived idea of what my painting is going to look like when I start it, I just let it happen, layer upon layer just like life.

Canyon Sounds presents

“The Poulenc Trio”Friday, April 7, 7:30 pmVenue: Gold Canyon United Methodist Church6640 S. Kings Ranch Road, Gold Canyon, AZThe Poulenc Trio, a creative piano, oboe, and bassoon ensemble,

is one of the most active touring chamber music groups in the world. The trio has made a commitment to perform music by composers from all regions of the world, Afro-Cuban, Argentina, and Russian-American, resulting in very unique musical repertoires.

The Palm Beach Daily said “From the first notes, we knew this was a group of first-rate chamber musicians, who took as much delight in the joys of intimate playing as they gave. In the Piazzolla (tangos), the Poulenc played like Argentine street musicians with plenty of dulce de leche sweetness”.

Purchase advance adult tickets for $25 and students for $5 at Canyon Rose Storage at 6405 S. Kings Ranch Rd, Gold Canyon, AZ or at the Apache Junction Chamber of Commerce on the Apache Trail. Also, order via PayPal on our website www.gcac1.com.

Tickets at the door are $30.The Gold Canyon Arts Council, a non-profit organization which

promotes the performing and visual arts through its Canyon Sounds series. The Council is supported in part by grants from the Arizona Commission on the Arts, WESTAF, the National Endowment for the Arts.
