NAPLAN tests the sorts of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life, such as reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy. It is important to remember that NAPLAN tests are not pass/fail tests. At the classroom level it is one of a number of important tools used by

teachers to measure student progress. If you have any questions about NAPLAN please ask your child’s teacher.

News Junior News

Welcome to Term 2! We hope you all had a safe and wonderful Easter break. We’ve jumped straight back into learning across the Junior School and can see lots of improvement from all the students since the beginning of the year. Keep it up team! Reading: In Prep, we are focusing on recognising the difference between letters, words and sentences. We are continuing to find the number of syllables in words and are starting to explore rhyming words. We have also begun to talk about Tricky Words (non phonetic high frequency words), we will be introducing these at school first before sending them home to practise. In Grade 1 and 2, we are focusing on Sight Word Spider and Checkin’ Chicken, who remind us to practise and learn our high frequency words and to stop and check while we’re reading to make sure we understand what we are reading, as we are reading it.

Writing: The Preps have been focusing on Group 4 Jolly Phonics sounds – they are /ai/, /j/, /oa/, /ie/, /ee/ and /or/. They have now learned the four of the five LONG vowel sounds - /ai/, /ee/, /ie/ and /oa/! We are continuing to try and regulate the size and formation of our letters and are beginning to listen to and record the sounds we hear in words.

In Grade 1 and 2, we have jumped back into narrative writing – refreshing ourselves on what a narrative is and working on Sizzling Starts. That means starting a piece of writing in the middle of the action to draw in the reader’s attention and make them want to keep reading!

News Mathematics: In Prep, we have been making groups, using different objects to model numbers to 10. We have also been thinking about numbers that come BEFORE and AFTER a number. We have begun exploring the concept of capacity, learning to label containers as empty, full and half full. We continued learning about 2D shape, reviewing the features of simple shapes, finding 2D shapes in our classroom and turning simple shapes into other objects, for example, using a square to make a house. The Grade 1 and 2s have been focusing on place value and number sequence, this includes breaking numbers into their parts, i.e. hundreds, tens and ones, skip counting and ordering numbers. We have been working hard on time, using clocks to make o’clock, half past and quarter hour times – we are working hard to remember the job of the big hand, and the job of the little hand. Reminders:

Late Arrivals – please remember that if your child arrives at school after the bell has rung, they need to be taken to the Office, and not straight to their classroom, so that they can be signed in. We cannot sign students in from the classroom.

Tissues – if you haven’t sent in a box of tissues for your child’s class, please do so at your earliest convenience. We are missing a lot of boxes and they will be needed for the coming cooler months.

Home Reading and Homework – please help your child/ren get back into a solid routine with their home reading and homework, the additional practise they get at home is crucial in consolidating their learning in the classroom.

Celebrations: Congratulations to all the Preps who have been working hard to learn their letter sounds –

Miss Hayes and Mrs Minas were super impressed to see how many sounds they remembered over the holidays! Keep it up superstars!

What a fabulous start to the term – keep it up everyone! Miss Hayes, Mrs Minas, Miss Morrison and Miss Robinson

Literacy: To support Reading and Writing at FPS we have the Jolly Learning Program that helps to structure our phonics, grammar and spelling lessons at school. Over the past few weeks the grade ¾ have been learning about and discovering antonyms and synonyms. Below are some of their Anty-Antonyms that they have created to show their learning.

For those of you who want to help your children learn at home, below are some of the topics we are

focusing in Grammar lessons for the remainder of the term.

News Maths: Over the past few weeks we have had a huge focus in class on or number fact knowledge: Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division. It has been wonderful to see how much the students have grown in these topics already but there is still a way to go before the students feel super confident with this topic. At school we have been learning different fact strategies, and practising how fast we can remember our number facts by playing games, making flash cards and challenging ourselves to answer as fast as we can. Cross Country: It’s been amazing to see how well the students have taken on the challenge of training for Cross Country! Students have been practising their breathing when running, having a lot of drink breaks to stay hydrated and trying to beat their previous efforts. Teachers have also been hearing an amazing amount of motivation and support to keep everyone moving and get everyone across the line! We are sure the students will be excited to tell you about how they went and the efforts they made

on Thursday and Friday this week for school Cross Country!

News Homework: As many families may have noticed there has been a change in the days. Homework is now due on Tuesday. This change was made to support the students that wished to do homework on the weekend, and to help students feel a little more organised and confident when completing the homework by giving them more time to ask questions about their spelling and maths work. Students can either bring in their homework as a hard copy or post their homework and reading online on Compass. Another change this term is that there are two homework club sessions during lunch time: One on

Monday for students to ask questions about their work and get extra feedback and one on Tuesday

to give students an opportunity to finish their homework.
