CELEBRATING ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL CONFERENCE!

Over 50 different schools applied for the CIRA Intramural Award, whichrecognizes their intramural success. Each school had to submit anapplication summarizing their program including some of the highlightsand successes of their program. After reviewing their applications, onetheme that was mentioned in a lot of the applications was the participationof the staff of the school in the intramural’s for the students.

A highlight seen in a lot of the schools is having staff involved on ateam and having the students play against the staff. Overall, the schoolsthat have done this say that there is a lot of participation of thestudents through competing and cheering. They say this is a highlight oftheir intramural programs, and most of the time the whole school isexcited about the game. Some examples include:

Immaculate High – They say it is important to have a teacher’s teamcompeting against the students to back up or talk about theimportance of being physically active, and their gym is alwayspacked for these games.

Brisdale Public – The staff/student game is an annual event at theirschool, and it is played in front of the entire school populationcreating an energetic atmosphere. It is a soccer game at the end ofthe year, which is a special celebration to send off the Grade Fivestudents.

Many schools mention ways and benefits of their staff being involved intheir intramurals. Here are some examples:

Brisdale Public – Each year the staff participation in the intramuralprogram grows. Their volunteer staff referees are crucial in allowingall of the grade levels to be involved in their mini seasons. Staff alsovideo tape the games. The staff also helps organize and run playdays. The staff/teacher involvement helps to add a sense ofcommunity.

St. Isodore – Many of our teachers are involved in the running of boththe Primary and Junior Intramurals. They are excited about theprogram, but are more happy to watch the games and get involvedwhen they can.

Frank Ryan Catholic – The staff and students really enjoy our firstactivity, which is homeroom vs. homeroom crash mat basketball. Here, the homeroom teachers come out to support their students.

The Sterling Hall – We have an event that includes the staff at ourannual SHS Summer Olympics, and it is called the House relay. Therelay starts with a JK student who passes the baton to a SK, all theway up to grade seven who passes it to a mother, then a father, thena female staff member, then a male staff member, and finally to aGrade Eight student. This is a fantastic event that includes a lot ofcheering spectators.
