We are delighted to present the syllabus for the 2013 festival, whichincludes new classes for Popular Song. We hope to welcome ourregulars once again, as well as many new participants.

The availability and cost of venues has been, and will continue to be,a challenge. St Peter’s Church will be used on Saturday. Most Dramaclasses will take place in the Queen Victoria Hall. We have budgetedto cover the three fold increase in venue costs by spreading the loadbetween competitors, patrons and sponsors. Our entry fees are basedon the performance and adjudication time for competitors. Thanks togenerous sponsorship from Oundle Town Council, we have been ableto keep the increase in entry fees to a minimum this year.

A Federation of Festivals report in 2011 concluded that Oundle Festivalof Music & Drama was

“A very good example of the best in spirit, organisationand performance within our festival movement”

The many positive messages received following the 2012 Festivalemphasised its value once again. Some Festivals in the region havebeen unable to continue as they have been unable to recruit newcommittee members. Our committee needs new, younger, membersif Oundle is to avoid the same fate. So please come and join us.

SPEECH AND DRAMA COMPETITIONS

Sylvia has lived and worked in Rugby all her life and teaches children, students andadults. Having trained in Dance, she became very interested in Speech and Dramathrough encouragement from Rugby High School. She went on to producepantomimes, musicals and plays as well as taking leading roles and has appearedin two TV films and in television shows. Sylvia loves to encourage all forms ofperforming arts and believes that the discipline of structured training significantlydevelops her pupils and that they all ‘walk tall’ as a result. She is a FederationAdjudicator for both Dance and Speech & Drama.

Born in Aberdeen, Tish trained at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Shehas a wide range of experience in teaching all age groups in schools, colleges andin the business world and is a visiting lecturer in vocal communications in collegesin the UK and in Italy. Tish examines for the English Speaking Board (International)Ltd. As well as ‘Voice Over’ work, she has experience as a performer and a directorand is a trained singer, specialising in recitals of poetry and song. From an earlyage Tish took part in festivals and is the Organiser and Chairman of the ChippingNorton Festival.

The title of the play/novel, author and publisher should be submitted at the timeof entry. The final script, indicating cuts, must be sent to the Drama Secre-tary, clearly marked with class number and name, by March 11th.Your attention is drawn to the ALCS Copyright agreement below.

Oundle Festival subscribes to licences from the Authors’ Licensing and CollectingSociety and the Copyright Licensing Agency.

The agreement with ALCS covers performers for the speaking of verse and proseitems during the festival. Dramatic items are not covered but solo monologues donot require copyright cover. If you intend to perform a duologue or group scene froma play you must contact the copyright owner directly, before the entry is made.

Dramatic items must be announced with title and author at the time of performanceto qualify for copyright indemnity, and the performer must not change the words orthe gender of the character.

“Performers and teachers will be delighted to know that their participation in thisfestival means that authors will be directly reimbursed as a consequence of theirworks being performed at this festival.”

The CLA licence entitles the festival to make photocopies of verse and proseprovided we own an original copy of the licensed material and the copy does notexceed 5% of any item, ie 5% of the book or one chapter. These paper copies mustnot be sold.

Michael Rose is a composer, conductor and teacher based in NorthBuckinghamshire. Formerly the Music Adviser for Bedfordshire, he conducts theBedfordshire County Youth Orchestra, Bedfordshire Symphony Orchestra andBedford Sinfonia and is Director of the Olney Conducting Workshops.He is also aregular guest conductor of the Bedfordshire Choral Society.

Michael’s compositions include many works carefully tailored to the learning needsof instrumentalists as well as large scale works for choirs and orchestras. Hecontinues to give lessons on both composition and conducting and campaigns formusic education.

ADJUDICATOR: BETTE GRAY-FOW

An American by birth, Bette has had a wide ranging career as a singer,instrumentalist, choral conductor, teacher and writer. An accomplished singer andinstrumentalist across a number of musical styles, her performing career began inEarly Music, oratorio and light opera. Later she applied her skills to choral conducting,expanding her repertoire to include pop, jazz and music theatre. Teachers andvocal coaches include Pamela Cook, David Maxwell-Harrison, Peter Pears, andthe noted American accompanist Martin Katz. She is the author of ‘Chorus forEveryone’ and ‘Discovering & Developing Talent in Schools’. She teaches privately,both singing and bassoon.

RULESTeachers: Please make these known to all entrants

The Committee accepts no responsibility for damage to or loss ofinstruments, music copies or personal property of any kind.

1. No professional performer may compete. A professional is someonewho derives his/her livelihood from the branch of performance, definedby the class title, in which she/he seeks to enter the festival. In anyensemble, all members must adhere to that principle. This rule doesnot apply to conductors.

2. Age limits, where stipulated, apply to September 1st, 2012 and Yeargroups to the current school year of the competitor.

3. Completed entry forms, including the title, composer/author andpublisher of Own Choice pieces, together with fees to be sent toEntries Secretary no later than Wednesday 16th Jan 2013.

4. No change to the original entry, either performer or own choicepiece, is allowed without the prior permission of the organisers.

5. Duet/Duologue competitors may only enter more than once in thesame class if singing or performing a different part or playing adifferent instrument.

6. A piece must not be offered more than once by the same competitorfor adjudication during the Festival.

7. Performers are encouraged to make use of the full time allocation forOwn Choice classes, but their performance, including introductions,must not exceed the time limits stated. Performers running over theallotted time will be adjudicated but not awarded a mark.

8. Marks will be awarded in accordance with the scale recommendedby the BIFF:

75 - 77 FAIR A performance limited in its communication

78 - 80 MODERATE A performance showing development of technique and/or communication

81 - 83 MERIT A capable performance showing some artistic appreciation &/or technical ability

84 - 86 COMMENDED A convincing performance technically and artistically

87 - 89 DISTINCTION An excellent performance technically and artistically

90 + OUTSTANDING An exceptional performance both technically and artistically

11. Adjudicator’s Copy. Copies of all Own Choice items, including thosefor Grade Classes, must be brought to the Festival for the use of theadjudicator. Copies must be clearly marked with the competitor’sname, class number and with the page number of the chosen piece.

When using music downloaded from the internet the performer shouldalso print off, and submit, the permission statement thataccompanies the music.

12. Unauthorised photocopying is illegal. To comply with the code of FairPractice, any photocopies brought for the use of the Adjudicator willbe retained by the Committee and destroyed.

13. CD backing tracks are only allowed for drama performances.

14. Photographing, videoing or recording by any means of Festivalsessions is forbidden, in line with Performing Rights and ChildProtection Policies.

15. The Committee reserves the right to accept or refuse anyentry and its decision on any point is final.

The safety of children and vulnerable adults is paramount and all, without exception,have the right to protection from abuse. All suspicions and allegations of abuse willbe taken seriously and responded to swiftly and appropriately and all the charity’strustees, staff and volunteers have a responsibility to report concerns.

1. Purpose and Function of Organisation

To advance the education of the public in the Arts of Music, Speech and Drama,with the educational element provided by professional adjudicators, the organisationholds an annual competitive Festival, which includes a final concert to celebratethe achievement of participants.

2. To Whom does this policy apply

Children under the age of 18 years and those vulnerable adults of any age, who areidentified to the organisation prior to their arrival at the Festival. The Festival activelyseeks to meet the special needs of participants notified to the Entry Secretary byparents, guardians or carers. This should be done by contacting 01832 273191.

3. The Festival Environment

Working in partnership with parents, guardians, carers and teachers, we seek toprovide a caring environment with the highest possible protection for children andvulnerable adults. The ratio of supervisors to participants in groups should be 1 to10, unless the visits policy of the School or Community group requires a smallerratio.Competitors may have to cross the road when moving between the competitionrooms and other facilities, which are spread round the centre of Oundle.Festival personnel do not undertake a supervisory role and parents who arenot attending with their children should satisfy themselves that their childrenwill be accompanied to, and supervised at, the Festival by responsible adultsacting on their behalf.Should a problem occur the Door Steward should be informed, who will contact theSecretary or another Committee member without delay. A private area is alsoavailable in the Festival Office. Every reported problem will be treated seriouslyand will be documented and dated.

4. Festival personnel

Festival helpers can be identified by their badges. They have a role description anda copy of this policy. All jobs are reviewed regularly to ascertain whether an enhanceddisclosure from the Criminal Records Bureau is required. A reference will be soughtfor any new helper.

5. Preparation for attendance at the Festival

It is necessary for teachers and parents to be aware of their responsibilities inentering any performers with limited physical capabilities or special needs, bearingin mind the limitations imposed by the stage and surrounding environment. It isalso necessary for the teacher or parent to pass on to the adjudicator, via theorganiser, any such information that would impact on the adjudicator’s work.When the timetable is published teachers/leaders will be sent a photocopiable masterof this policy. The teacher/leader will be asked to sign a declaration that this policyhas been passed on to parents/carers in good time for them to make any necessaryarrangements.Individual junior entrants will receive a copy of the policy with their entry ticket.

6. Performance areas and Changing areas

There are public toilets and limited changing facilities, which are notsupervised. Practice rooms are also available, which are not supervised byFestival helpers.

7. Photographs, Videotapes and Press Photography.

A condition of entry to the Festival is that no video taping or photography by anymeans may take place during the competitions. On occasions a Press photographerwill request permission to take photographs. Parents, guardians, carers and/orteachers should inform the Festival, before attending, if a competitor is not to beapproached.The Festival may appoint an official photographer to record Festival events.Permission will be sought for the use of these images for publicity purposes.
