“All the world’s a stage!” This famous quote is the beginning phrase of a monologue from William Shakespeare’s As You Like It. At Ouachita Baptist University, that stage is full of actors, musicians and artists who are presenting, performing and entertaining throughout the year.

Ouachita is excited to present its second year of the Arts Series. The past year has seen a remarkable display of artistic endeavors by Ouachita students, faculty and guest artists as well as world-renowned artists who were brought in to entertain and amaze our audiences. This year will be even better with appearances by the internationally-recognized Canadian Brass and the sensational group iLuminate, featured on America’s Got Talent. The Art Series will also host a variety of visiting art exhibits and individual musical performances. Ouachita’s School of Fine Arts will add its own wide array of musical concerts, recitals and opera productions; plays, musicals, dramas; and both faculty and senior art exhibits. You can find more information on these events at www.obu.edu/finearts or by following us on Facebook.

Whether you are visiting us as a member of the Friends of Fine Arts or just for a single event, your presence and partnership are invaluable. I hope you will join us for an exciting year of artistic excellence as we bring “the world to our stage!”

“I am privileged to be on the campus of Ouachita Baptist University where I have the wonderful opportunity to enjoy a multitude of creative arts generated by our students, faculty and guest artists. These exceptional events include a wide variety of productions in the areas of theatre, visual arts and music. I assure you that you will be amazed at the high quality of our productions and shows, as well as the superior talents of our students. I encourage you to view our brochure and make your plans now to support the ‘arts at Ouachita’ program.”

Charles W. Wright, Interim PresidentOuachita Baptist University

“The consistent excellence that I encounter with every visit to Ouachita is profound! I am always amazed by the incredible talent level of the students and the investment of the faculty in the students to ensure they will be at their best! Knowing I will not be disappointed, I take every opportunity to enjoy features of the School of Fine Arts. I leave every time having been entertained, enriched and feeling extremely proud to be an OBU alumnus!”

Larry Grayson, Music & Worship Consultant,

Arkansas Baptist State Convention

“Betty and I like living in a small town, but we also enjoy attending theater productions. Living in Arkadelphia, we get the best of both worlds. Over the last 20 years, we have seen a wide variety of productions at OBU that have made us laugh and made us cry. We are always amazed at the talent we see on the OBU stage and consider ourselves fortunate to have access to these local events.”

Dr. David NorthingtonAt his New York debut recital at

Carnegie Hall, the New York Times called David Northington “an immensely gifted musician … who combines the technical mastery of a virtuoso with the musical sensitivity of a poet.”

His tours have included the United States, Eastern and Western Europe, Canada, China and Russia. He also has taught master classes at leading conservatories in these countries.

Dr. Northington’s masterful pianism has won him many professional and teaching awards. He currently is a professor of piano at the University of Tennessee School of Music.

Gerry PaganoNow into his fourth decade as a

professional musician, Gerry Pagano’s path has been a long and winding one. He started out playing his dad’s trombone, which he found in a closet. He attended the University of Georgia as a music education major. After performing with various groups, he earned Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from Julliard. After several years in the San Francisco area, he accepted his current position with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra.

He and his colleagues formed The Trombones of the St Louis Symphony and the St. Louis Low Brass Collective.

Canadian BrassWith an international reputation

as one of the most popular brass ensembles today, Canadian Brass has earned the distinction of “the world’s most famous brass group.” Canadian Brass features founding member Chuck Daellenbach (tuba), Christopher Coletti and Caleb Hudson (trumpets), Achilles Liarmakopoulos (trombone) and Bernhard Scully (horn).

The hallmark of any Canadian Brass performance is entertainment, spontaneity, virtuosity and fun. Masters of concert presentations, they have developed a uniquely engaging stage presence and rapport with audiences. Each of their concerts shows the full range from trademark Baroque and Dixieland tunes to new compositions and arrangements.

Arkansas Baptist Master’SingersThe Master’Singers are ministers

of music/worship leaders, directors, accompanists, choir leaders, pastors, staff members and staff spouses from Arkansas Baptist churches throughout the state. They find incredible joy in singing and worshiping together, sharing fellowship and supporting each other as they serve in their respective churches

Annual venues include state convention meetings and Festivals of Song in local churches as well as other venues including prisons. The music of Master’Singers has been heard around the world, sharing the message of Jesus Christ in Brazil, Germany, Guatamala, Russia and Ukraine. The group is a Cooperative Program ministry of the Arkansas Baptist State Convention.

Aaron HarpPraised by the Dallas Morning News

for his “appealingly rich baritone” and “sensitive singing,” Aaron Harp is building a national reputation as a stylistic performer of early music. Recent solo engagements include a performance of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion with the Dallas Bach Society and a program of Purcell music with the Seicento Baroque Ensemble.

Harp, who holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Ouachita Baptist University, earned his Master of Music degree in vocal performance from the University of North Texas. He has performed at various festivals including the Boston Early Music Festival, Berkeley Early Music Festival and American Bach Soloists Festival.

Dr. Andrew CooperstockPianist Andrew Cooperstock performs

widely as a soloist and chamber musician and has appeared throughout six continents and in most of the 50 states. He also performs with violinist William Terwilliger as Opus Two.

iLuminateMaybe you saw them on America’s

Got Talent, heard about them through one of their international appearances or saw their off-Broadway dance show at New World Stages in New York City.

iLuminate is quickly becoming a household name. They were called “the best new act in America” during their run on AGT in 2011.

iLuminate isn’t just a dance show. It’s a company based on the fusion of technology and dance. They create a visual display unlike anything you’ve ever seen, using dancers in electrified glow-in-the-dark suits to perform choreographed dances and illusions on a darkened stage.

Chrystal SeawoodBoys to Black Men is an art project

that responds to the trend in shooting deaths among unarmed, black males in America who’ve lost their lives at the hands of police. Exploring the social impact of this trend, artist Chrystal Seawood surveyed a small group of black boys between the ages of 15 and 19 in her hometown of Forrest City, Ark. The intent of the survey was to understand how the killings of unarmed, black males by police officers influence their relationship with law enforcement in their community and how these incidents connect to and affect their self-image with regards to becoming a black man in America.

The art exhibit serves as a visual reference of this survey. Each portrait and corresponding narrative offers a sense of candor and intimacy beyond typical media coverage.

Ted BarnesTed Barnes, a native of Little Rock, Ar.,

is a 1972 graduate of Ouachita Baptist University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in studio art. He earned his Master of Arts degree in art education from Western Kentucky University in 1977 and his Master of Fine Arts degree in painting from the University of Arkansas in 1979.

Barnes began his teaching career at Campbellsville College in 1979. Over the past 26 years, he also has been a teacher and administrator at Ouachita Baptist University, Louisiana College and Georgetown College. He currently serves as the dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.

André KertészKnown for his extended study of

Washington Square Park and his distorted nudes of the 1930s, André Kertész was a significant influence on the coming of age of photojournalism and the art of photography. For more than 70 years, his subtle and penetrating vision helped define a medium in its infancy.

This exhibit is curated from Ouachita’s own collection by Ferris Williams, assistant professor of visual arts.
