To perform motion analysis with OTRS, you need to take video of the objective motion or operation with video camera, and make movie files. Please set the video format of the camera to the one shown in the table below. If the camera doesn‘t have an appropriate option, please convert the format of the movie files by using video converter software.

ATTENTION 1. Some movie files even in the format above might not be usable depending on video camera or

converter software.

2. It is recommended to take video with about five second additional edges on both the beginning and the end of the objective motion to make analysis easy.

3. Jaggy may appear on the image while playing video of interlace mode. Please keep it in mind that OTRS can not remove jaggy.

4. Play function may be unstable while using the features listed below (depending on the bit rate of video).

* To reverse play in more than double speed in the motion analysis * To play or reverse play in more than double speed in the comparative analysis. For your information, bit rate and the features of movie file have the general relation shown below. 5. The video may stop instantaneously while playing it without waste in the motion analysis and the

comparative analysis, playing rearranged motions and playing a bar in the line balancing mode.

The OTRS Explorer is displayed when starting OTRS 10. New analysis data can be created, and saved data can be revised and used.

The displayed menu may vary depending on model in the contract. The above image is of a Model 401/501 contract.

Follow the steps below to start a new motion analysis.

2. Select the video to analyze and click [Open] button.

(i) Open selected file The following describes how to select a video displayed in the library and start a

new analysis.

1. Tick the checkbox on the video file in the library.

2. Click [Opens new file.].

[Start Motion Analysis.] [▼] is displayed.

The selected video is displayed in the [Motion Analysis] screen.

The following describes how to perform analysis from [Opens file menu.] on the right of the video name.

3. 3.2 Revising and using saved data

(1) Double-click the thumbnail image

1. Double-click the thumbnail image displayed in the library of the [Saved Data] screen.

Library : The color of the bars indicates the function with which the data is made.

You can find data saved within OTRS and start each function of OTRS. [Saved Data] screen has the functions listed below.

The displayed thumbnails may vary depending on the model in the contract. The five types of analysis data shown above are available in the Model 401/501 contract.

The following describes how to select analysis data displayed in the library and revise the data.

The following describes how to perform analysis from [Opens file menu.] on the right of the analysis data name.

1. Click [Open in Play Mode] in the [ ] to the right of the analysis data name.

3. 3.3 Search videos and analysis data

(1) [Select Movie] screen: Navigation

The following describes how to search relevant videos in the [Select Movie] screen.

1. Select the relevant directory folder in the navigation window, and click.

3. (2) [Saved Data] screen: Navigation

The following describes how to search relevant analysis data in the [Saved Data] screen.

1.Select the relevant folder in the navigation window, and click.

3. (3) Switch display (Thumbnail display / List display)

Display style of the library in OTRS Explorer can be selected. In thumbnail display, some items may be positioned far below where they are not displayed. By switching to list display, all items can be confirmed in a glance.

How to migrate analysis data or environmental settings of an OTRS10 PC to another OTRS10 PC

(1) Data migration from [OTRS10 PC] to [OTRS10 PC]

1. Click [Export] in [ ] menu.

This section describes how to divide a recorded video into elements and save the data.

An element is a motion unit that constitutes a meaningful operation. Depending on the video you analyze, there may be a combination of multiple elements. Motion analysis is the process of dividing a video into elements. When a video contains repeated operations, one complete operation is counted as one cycle. You can analyze up to 20 cycles of operations. After performing the motion analysis, you can enter descriptions of the elements, link to related files, and even add voice narration.

You can control video playback and analysis with the keyboard and mouse in addition to the screen icons.

4.1 Analyze motion in video files

This section describes how to perform video motion analysis.

(1) Configure view

(i) Change name

In Model 501, multiple target (multi-axial) motion analysis for single videos such as therblig analysis and multiple activity analysis can be performed.

A “view” must be registered in order to perform multi-axial analysis.

4.2 Create new analysis data [Analysis]Screen

2. Change the name of view and click [OK].

[Edit Name of View] window appears.

The displayed name in the [Motion Analysis] screen is changed.

1. Click [▼] and select a view for analysis.

The view function is available for Model 501. It will not display if using Model 101, 301, or 401.

A view is added in the [Motion Analysis] screen.

The view is switched.

1. Set the motion analysis start point.

(2) Confirm cycle

(i) Set start point

(3) Element analysis

Confirm that the video that is about to be analyzed is in the first cycle, and set it as “Cycle 1.” If it is on a different cycle, set it back to Cycle 1.

: Switches to next Cycle. : Switches to previous Cycle.

The relevant cycle can be directly selected by clicking [▼].

There are two ways to set the start point:

2. Play the video to the desired position and click [ ] button.

To make fine adjustment, you can advance or reverse the video frame-by-frame. Click [>] button to advance or [<] button to reverse. You can also roll the mouse wheel forward or backward to advance or reverse the video frame-by-frame.

Clicking [ ] and selecting an area zooms up the video as selected.

1. Click [ ] button to play the video.

Enclose the part you want to magnify with a mouse.

The enclosed part of the movie will be enlarged.

The start position of the video is set.

1. Move (drag) the blue line to the desired position in the timeline.

The video is not marked as element during Ex. Msmt..

You cannot start motion analysis while the video is playing in reverse.

2. Left-click in the video frame.

Click the [ ] icon to go back to the beginning of the element being analyzed. If clicked while a video is playing, it will go back to the beginning of the element and play from there. If clicked while the video is paused, it will go back to the beginning of the element and remain paused.

The video frame will turn light blue and the status Ex. Msmt in yellow will turn to Measuring in light blue. The video will be played in Measurement mode.

4. (ii) Define an element

1. Let the video go slightly past the end point.

2. Scroll down on the mouse wheel.

It will switch to reverse play mode, and the video will be played in reverse.

3. Left-click in the video frame at the end point.

Motion Analysis End Point If the video reaches the end during an analysis, you will not be able to use the analysis commands.

The video frame will turn yellow and Ex. Msmt appears in yellow.

This will mark the segment as an element.

A row will be added for the next motion analysis.

1. Click [Word Pickup] on the [Edit] menu.

You can select and enter element names using the Word Pickup function.

(iii) Enter an element name

You can register words in Input Mode.

2. Enter the element name and press the Enter key.

The element name is selected and you can enter a name.

The element name is entered.

When the analysis of one element ends, left-clicking at the next start point will start the motion analysis again.

1. Move to the motion analysis start point for the next element and

left-click in the video frame.

(iv) Analyze the next element

You can move to the start point using the timeline or by playing the video to the desired position.

1. Left-click in the video frame at the end point.

This will mark the segment as an element.

If you find an invalid motion during a motion analysis, right-click in the video frame to mark the segment as an invalid motion.

1. [Play] click.

(v) Define invalid motions

2. Right-click in the video frame at the start point of the invalid motion.

The video will be played in Invalid Motion mode.


The invalid motion measurement will begin.

The segment will be marked as invalid motion.

4. (vi) Assign an element category group You can select the element category from the drop-down menu under [▼] icon.

You can register category group at OTRS Configuration.

A blank category can also be selected.

1. Double-click the [Category1] Column.

2. Click [▼] icon.

3. Click the applicable type.

[▼] is displayed.

The registered classification item is displayed.

The selected type field is entered in the [Category 1] field.

4. (vii) Comment You can add a comment with the steps below.

1. Select the importance of the comment.

4. Select the font, size, and style and enter the comment in the entry box.

You can paste the image in the [comment] field.

The character toolbar is displayed.

You can register a narration from a text.

To use English text, select “en-US, Helen” of “Microsoft Server Speech Text to Speech Voice”. “ja-JP, Haruka” is for Japanese.

The Narration icon appears in the Element Editor.

(viii) Narration You can register and play back a narration (audio file) for the elements.

4. (4) Inheriting and copying grid data

Data such as element names and times that were analyzed in one cycle can be inherited by the next cycle or copied.

If “Cycle name inherited” and “Cycle time inherited” in the grid menu are checked, the checked items will be inherited and displayed when switching to the next cycle.

This will load the analysis data into [Comparison] screen.

In Model 101, Comparison can be performed, but analyzed data cannot be saved.

You can control the two screens simultaneously with the global controller’s play and reverse-play icons.

You can also control each video individually.

5. 5.4 Print Out Comparison You can print comparisons of motions with still images with time differences

between element.

Clicking [Output PDF] or [Output Excel] option will export the motion comparison as a PDF or Excel file.

Elements can be extracted from analysis data, and the order or elements can be rearranged.

6.1 Simulate operation from multiple analysis data

Elements forming the best lap can be arranged by extracting elements from analysis data or rearranging the order of elements. The combination of elements with the shortest element times can be automatically arranged.

In Model 501, element motion can be selected for each cycle of the view being analyzed. Select the relevant view from “Selected Data List.”

The chart is made from the analysis data before and after improvement using takt time as a guide. You can see the time series of analyzed elements, the aggregation of time, the performance per unit time and the simulation of production efficiency.

1. Click [ ] icon. [Select Data] window appears. 2. Select the data to be loaded and click [OK] button. This will load the analysis data.

To use rework feature in the chart, please enter the same name into the equipment fields of the elements that use the same equipment.

In the [Combination Chart] screen, new value-added motion is added, order is rearranged, and the work time and walking time of value-added motion is configured in order to reflect the data to the Standard Work Combination Chart. Also, colors can be set for elements, which is reflected in the Standard Work Combination Chart.

items per turn, and the seconds per turn.

This will create the irregular operation. The values will be included in [Cycle Time

Takt time is calculated from [time per shift(min.)] and [items per shift].

1. Click [Takt Time] field. [Takt Time] entry box appears. 2. Enter the time per required unit and the number of required units per shift. The takt time will be set.

Line balancing chart visually shows dispersion of the time between works using bars.

You can simulate the optimization of work distribution by moving elements of analysis data by drag & drop. It’s called leveling of work process of a line, which reveals the wait time and reduce the waste process.

Each bar built on the screen can be played as a video and you can see the virtual operation.
