Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC), with support from the George Gund Foundation, undertook six trail counts along the greater Cleveland trail

network in the summer of 2013.

The locations where the counts were taken were

chosen in consultation with the City of Cleveland Planning Commission. The Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath had one location along the trail that is built

behind the Steelyard Commons retail development. The count was performed by the latest generation of Trafx brand infrared trail counters, deployed and

maintained by RTC staff. In 2013 data was collected from May 21st until August 25th, giving 97 days of count data. The results of these counts are depicted in the following report. For management purposes this counter was

referred to as “OTE-Canal Steelyard.”

Working with these numbers, RTC staff ran the information through a matrix developed in house. This matrix incorporates counts from around the country into the equation. Through this process the overall annual use on

this section of the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath came out to be 16,776. This data represents the first count ever taken along this trail in Cleveland. Future trail construction connecting this section into the greater Towpath

Trail system and downtown Cleveland will create increased use, which will necessitate further trail count activities.
