Emphasis is placed on the touch system, correct techniques, and development of speed and accuracy. Upon completion, students should be able to key at an acceptable speed and accuracy level using the touch system. Course Format: This course will be taught as a 100% online course. Each week will typically begin on Monday and run through Sunday. All assignments from the “assignment schedule” are due by 11:00 pm EST INCLUDING Discussion Board posts. Make sure you take note of due dates and times. You will be required to use the GDP software to submit assignments and Blackboard to submit course discussions, to view information for quizzes and exams, and to communicate with me and other students. postings. You will navigate from BB to GDP to MS Word and you will use two textbooks; one for your typing exercises and one for your Word processing assignments. You will need to make sure you have a student registration key for the GDP software that comes with your textbook package. However, if you rent your textbook, your responsibility will be to purchase the registration key separately and immediately before class begins. Your first PRIORITY should be to submit the “Enrollment Verification Quiz” in Blackboard by 11:59 p.m. August 15, 2013 (Eastern Time). Otherwise, you will not be entered into the class until you complete this quiz. Other attendances will be counted based upon your submission of discussion board posts by the required due date. Please do not make the mistake of missing a class early in the semester and then you have 3 later on which will automatically exceed the required absences of two discussion board posts. GDP Access Code: If you have a previous access code for GDP, notify me immediately and I will transfer you into the correct section for this course. The section name in GDP will be “OST 131 I3”. Student Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Operate the letter, number and symbol keys with correct fingering and with eyes on copy. 2. Correctly set margins and tabs using formatting. 3. Answer correctly at least 70 percent of the questions on objective tests. 4. Center typed material both vertically and horizontally. 5. Format correctly various production jobs including business letters and interoffice memorandums. 6. Format correctly from unarranged copy or rough-draft copy letters and interoffice memorandums. 7. Operate the 10-keypad by touch. 8. Pass a three-minute timed writing with 35 words per minute.

A kit will include the typing textbook, a word reference manual, and a student registration key. If you buy a used book, make sure you have a student registration key no later than the second day of class to avoid missing any assignments scheduled.

In general, you need access to any computer (either at home, office, or school) which is capable of providing graphical access to the Web via a high-speed modem, plus the ability to access your JCC Email account.

An orientation/training session on Blackboard 9.1, especially if this is your first distance learning course.

Microsoft Word 2007 or 2010. Important Note: The Kit in the book package is NOT Word 2010 nor Office 2010.

Ability to view animations that use Adobe Flash Player. Go to http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/ to

get this free plug-in if you do not already have it.

Because you are registered for an online course, you are responsible for having access to technology required

for this course. All students taking online courses are expected to have access to a computer with online access

at home, work, a public library, a neighbor, etc. Not having access to a computer with online access will not be

an acceptable excuse for late/missing assignments. Students assume the responsibility of securing appropriate

technology to complete the course requirements.

Course Overview (Lessons 1-40) PART 1

Unit 1 (Lessons 1-5) Students learn some of the alphabetic keys using the touch method and correct technique.

Unit 2 Lessons 6-10) Students complete the presentation of the alphabetic keys using the touch method and correct technique. Students learn to operate the Tab key and to take a 1-minute timed writing on paragraph text.

Unit 3 (Lessons 11-15) Students learn to touch-type the number keys and to take 2-minute timed writings.

Unit 4 (lessons 16-20) Students learn to touch-type the symbol keys. PART 2

Unit 5 (Lessons 21-25) Students will be introduced to Microsoft Word and will learn how to navigate in a document, select text, edit text, and print documents. Students also will learn to use Help and to check spelling and grammar. The basics of using email also will be presented.

Unit 6 (Lessons 26-30) Students will be introduced to business letters using the block style, create envelopes and write interoffice memos.

Unit 7 (Lessons 31-35) Students will be introduced to reports and Word features including numbered and bulleted lists, page numbering, indents, and line spacing.

Unit 8 (Lessons 36-40) Students will learn to create boxed, open, and ruled tables. EVALUATION METHODS: The final grade for this course will be based on the average of the following:

Timed Writings 25%

Tests/Final Exam 25%

Course grades will be assigned as objectively as possible, according to the following 7-point scale:

A = 93 – 100

B = 85 – 92

C = 77 – 84

D = 70 – 76

F = 69 and below

I will make every effort to grade tests and assignments

within one week after the due date.

Midterm and Final Exams:

The midterm and final exams will be in two parts: written and production. The written portion may be in short answer,

matching, or multiple-choice form and will cover material from lectures and the textbook. The production portion will

require you to complete a timed writing exercise with a required passing goal and to create documents from word

processing. If you miss your exams, a grade of zero will be given for all parts. No makeups or retakes and no partial

credit will be given!!

CRITICAL SUCCESS STRATEGIES: (Recommended topics that students need to know)

All assignments must be submitted on or before the due date/time. No exceptions!! You instructor can view the time and date and the amount of time spent in the GDP software. Do not wait until the last day due to begin your work to avoid any computer/Internet problems and a grade of zero.

Access www.johnstoncc.edu or http://bb.johnstoncc.edu for links to Blackboard. A “BB” icon is also located on the JCC homepage.

If you do not have a home computer, the open lab in Wilson C2007 is available for you to complete these assignments. Check with the lab assistant for times. The JCC Library may be another available option.

Communication is a vital part of an online class. To be successful you must communicate with the instructor.

Information pertaining to the entire class will be posted in announcements and sent as a class wide email as

needed. Individual student attention will be sent to the student through their JCC gmail. Students are

expected to check their JCC email accounts for messages and information from the instructor at least once a

day. It is recommended to check at the end of the business day by 5:00 p.m.

The instructor will be available during office hours to assist students and if necessary, during pre-scheduled

appointments outside the office hours. Please respect that the instructor has other duties during non-

scheduled office hours. Students may contact the instructor by calling her office or via email. Please use the

instructor’s email listed in the syllabus, [email protected]. Emails sent to another address may

not be answered. Do not send ANY assignments through email or gmail. It will not be accepted! The GDP

software is set up to grade all your work.

Please use your JCC gmail account when contacting the instructor; do not use your hotmail, AOL, yahoo, etc. email. When sending an email, please include your class name and section in the subject line. Ex: OST 131 I3. Failure to do this may result in an email being unanswered if the instructor has to respond to or research what class/section you are enrolled in to answer your question. When sending emails, be sure your subject line is descriptive. An email without a subject or something vague like “Hey” will send your email to the bottom of the list to be read.

If you send an email, please check for a response before asking if I have read your email. Most all emails are responded to quickly.

It is the policy of the instructor to answer emails within a 48 hour period. Emails sent after 3:00 pm on Friday may not be answered until Monday, usually after the instructor is out of classroom. Your messages will be answered promptly, probably in less than the policy stated time.

Check Blackboard on a regular basis for course announcements, course schedule changes, and email. Be sure that you log in the first day of class so any technical difficulties can be quickly resolved.

All course materials, including the syllabus and schedule, are subject to change at the instructor’s discretion.

Keep this schedule below with you at all times. This is what you will need to follow each week to complete the

assignments listed below. If you are unsure, send me an email in your JCC Gmail account. Do not get behind because

you did not understand as this will not keep you from earning a grade of zero!!! Your discussion board posts will be in

addition to your typing/document processing schedule below.

**************************************Important information***********************************

1. Timed writings count 25 percent of your grade. You must pass at least one 3-minute timed writing with 35 words per minute with no more than 5 errors in lessons 1-60 from GDP in order to pass this course. Less than 35 wpm by the end of the course will be an automatic F.

2. A Timed writing grading scale is located in BB under “Assignments”. 3. You are allowed to have up to 3 errors on 1-minute timings, 5 errors on 2-, 3- or 5-minute timings. More errors

will result in the timed writing with a grade of 69. 4. If you later increase your speed, you must email me that you have retaken the timed writing; the next time I

download grades, I will update your speed grade on that timed writing. Please tell me the specific timed writing that you completed. I will not ask. A ten point deduction will occur or all retakes of timed writings.

5. Any timed writing not taken as scheduled will be a zero or if taken with too many errors, will receive an automatic grade of 69.

6. Timed writings that are paragraphs, use WordWrap. This means you only press the enter key at the end of each paragraph, not sentence. Otherwise, you will be counted for errors. Space once after each period. The GDP program is automatically set up in this format.

7. Supplemental Timed Writings are found under Timed Writings/Other in GDP. Scroll down below the 12 second sprints and you will see Supplemental Timings. Click on it and select the appropriate timed writing. They are to be typed from your textbook located in the back of your typing book, not the word manual.

8. Lesson grades are dependent on how much of the assigned lesson you complete. If you see a yellow triangle beside a portion of a lesson, the software has not recognized that you completed that section. It may be something as simple as not pressing next after keying or not keying the lines in the proper order. Make sure you complete all required exercises to receive a full completion grade.

9. Refer to the Word manual on lessons to learn how to use Microsoft Word. This is also a reference manual. This will be most utilized starting with lessons 21-40.

DEPARTMENT ONLINE or HYBRID COURSE ATTENDANCE POLICY:

Attendance in class is expected of all students in order for them to achieve their potential in class and to

develop desirable personal traits necessary to succeed in employment. This course is considered

completely online. In order for you to be considered “attending” this course, you must engage in this

course as much as (or more than) you would in a traditional classroom. To be engaged, you must

actively participate in all components of the course. Since course content and teaching methods vary,

each department will determine its own requirements for attendance. Please read the following

information carefully and be sure you understand your requirements for this course.

All students must enter class prior to the class 10 percent (census) date, which is set forth by the NC State of Community Colleges for reporting purposes. The 10 percent date for this class is August 26, 2013 which is the final date for entering this class. Any missed work will be the responsibility of the student to make up and catch up with the assignment schedule. Late penalties will not count during this time period only.

Each student will be officially “entered” into the class upon completion of the Verify Your Enrollment

quiz (typically within 24 hours of the start of the course). To avoid being counted absent and

falling behind in assignments, you must complete the Verify Enrollment the first day of class unless you

have enrolled late. A link will be provided in Blackboard that you will need to click on and complete.

This is not for a grade but for attendance. You are not considered “entered” in the course until you

complete the “Verify Your Enrollment” quiz.

If a student has not completed the Verify Your Enrollment quiz prior to the 10 percent date, the student

will be reported as having not attended (NA).

ATTENDANCE POLICY: All students must enter class prior to the class 10 percent (census) date, which is the date set by the state for reporting purposes. Regular and punctual attendance is expected of all students in order for them to achieve their potential in class and to develop desirable personal traits necessary to succeed in employment. Students who fail to attend by this date will be dropped from the class roll. Since course content and teaching methods vary, each instructor will determine

his or her own requirements for attendance. For this course, if a student misses more than 12.5%*, or 2 weeks of

classes or 2 discussion board posts in this course the student will be dropped. The student can be dropped at ANY TIME during the semester including that time period before the date designated each semester as the last day a student can drop without grade penalty. The 12.5%* rule includes absences from class for any reason. If a student is dropped by an instructor due to excessive absences, a grade of “WF” will be issued, and could affect his/her financial aid. The student must obtain the permission of the instructor to reenter class. If this request is denied, the student may petition the Dean for reinstatement. If the Dean denies the request, the Vice President of Instruction will make the final ruling on the decision.

Class attendance is calculated from the first scheduled class meeting to the last.

Students who choose to participate in College related activities such as SGA or Athletics must adhere to

the attendance policy. Students are responsible for informing their instructors in advance of absences

and are expected to make arrangements for making up work missed. In such cases, upon approval of the

instructor, class time missed will not be counted as absences provided the students are otherwise in good

academic standing (2.0 cumulative GPA).

Attendance will be calculated in this online class by one or all of the following when assigned: The completion of weekly assignments in the GDP software

Discussion board postings in Blackboard under “Discussion Board” with due date and time. Quizzes/tests/exams submitted through GDP The assignment will always be posted in Blackboard under “Assignments” with the due date and time.

RELIGIOUS OR SOLEMN OBSERVANCE POLICY Johnston Community College authorizes two excused absences from classes each academic year for religious or solemn

observances. For the purposes of this policy, an academic year begins on the first day of fall classes in August and ends

on the last day of summer classes in July each year.

Students requesting absence from class for religious or solemn observance must complete the Religious or Solemn

Observance Absence Request Form and obtain instructor approval at least two weeks prior to the date of the absence.

Students who miss class for religious or solemn observance will be granted the opportunity to make up work missed due

to the absence.

GENERAL POLICIES

Students are expected to conduct themselves in accordance with generally accepted standards of scholarship and

morality. A complete listing of all college policies is available in the latest edition of the JCC catalog.

Academic Integrity The following regulation sets forth rules of conduct prohibiting cheating. Taking or acquiring possession of any academic material (test information, research papers, noted, etc.) from a member of the college staff or student body without permission; receiving or giving help during tests; submitting papers or reports (that are supposed to be original work) that are not entirely the student’s own; not giving credit for others’ work (plagiarism).

Violation of one or more of these rules may result in one of the following sanctions: Reprimand Probation Interim Suspension Loss of Academic Credit or Grade Suspension Expulsion Minors on Campus College policy does not allow minors to be brought to class(es). Minors are not allowed on campus while parents are attending class(es). Bringing guests to class(es) is a potential disruption for others and places the college in a position of liability. Cell Phones & Electronic Devices Use of cell phones, pagers or other electronic devices while attending class or participating in class-related activities (i.e.,

labs, clinical, etc)is prohibited without prior approval of the instructor. These devices must be silenced before entering

the classroom or during participation in a class-related activity. Students will be asked to leave class for the day if this is

not followed and an absence will be recorded for that student.

Confidentiality Policy

In accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974, Johnston Community College does

not release student information concerning attendance, grades, GPA, or withdrawals to anyone, including parents or

employers, without proper documentation to the Registrar's office. If documentation is provided, the Registrar will

notify faculty if it is permissible to release information.

The open computer lab is located in Wilson, Room C2007. Other general use computers can be found in the

Library and the Academic Skills Center. You will need a valid student ID to access these areas.

Inclement Weather Policy – The President or designee of Johnston Community College will be responsible for canceling classes in the event of inclement weather or other emergencies. Unless announcements are made to cancel or delay classes, classes will be in session. If classes are canceled or delayed, announcements will be made on the local television and radio stations or the JCC website (www.johnstoncc.edu) Canceled classes or classes that do not meet for any reason will require a mandatory make up assignment.

JCC’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACS) is the regional body for the

accreditation of degree-granting higher education institutions in the Southern states. As a member of this organization,

Johnston Community College (JCC) was required to develop a Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) that identifies a specific

area for improvement.

Entitled “On the Write Path,” the JCC QEP is a key component of the Institution’s accreditation process. More
