Introduction• OSI Systems Management is a collection of

standards for network management that includes:– management service and protocol– definition of management information– systems management functions

• Joint standards by ISO & ITU-T (formerly CCITT)• Widely known as “CMIP”• used mostly in Telecommunications Network

Management• Very complex & many areas are still being refined

and standardized

Basic OSI Terminology (1)• Managed Object (MO): an abstract representation of a

resource to be managed

• Attribute: a property of an MO (~ instance variable in SNMP)

• Management Information Base (MIB): the conceptual repository of management information consisting of a set of MOs, together with their attributes

• Systems management functions: functions in the application layer related to the management of various OSI resources and their status across all layers of the OSI architecture

• Systems management application process (SMAP): an application process participating in systems management

Page 6: OSI Management Framework: Overview

6

Basic OSI Terminology (2)• Systems management application entity

(SMAE): an application entity which performs systems-

management communication • Layer management: the management of each OSI layer

• Layer management entity (LME): an entity that performs management-related activities for the specific OSI layer

• Systems management service: a named set of primitives that provide a service for use in systems management

• Systems management protocol: an application-layer protocol supporting systems-management services

• Systems management application-service element (SMASE): an application-service element providing systems-management services

Page 7: OSI Management Framework: Overview

Basic OSI Terminology (3)• Common management information service

element (CMISE): an application-service element used to exchange information and commands for the purpose of systems management

• Common management information services (CMIS): the set of services provided by the CMISE

• Common management information protocol (CMIP): an application-layer protocol supporting CMIS

• Association control service element (ACSE): an application-service element (ASE) supporting associations with other entities

• Remote operation service element (ROSE): an ASE supporting remote operations with remote entities

Systems Mgmt Functions (1)• Object Management

– supports the creation and deletion of MOs and the reading and changing of object attributes

• State Management– specifies a model for how the management state of

an object is to be represented

• Relationship Management– specifies a model for representing and managing

relationships between MOs.

• Alarm Reporting– supports the definition of fault alarms and the

notifications used to report them

Page 16: OSI Management Framework: Overview

16

Keimyung University

Systems Mgmt Functions (2)• Event-Report Management

– supports the control of event reporting, including the specification of recipients of reports, the definition of reports, criteria for generating and distributing reports

• Log Control– supports the creation of logs, the creation and

storage of log records, and the criteria for logging

• Security-Alarm Reporting– supports the definition of security alarms and the

notifications used to report them

Page 17: OSI Management Framework: Overview

17

Keimyung University

Systems Mgmt Functions (3)• Security-Audit Trail

– specifies the kinds of event reports that should be contained in a log used for security evaluation

• Access Control– supports the control of access to management

information and operations

• Accounting Meter– provides for accounting for the usage of system

resources and a mechanism for enforcing accounting limits

Page 18: OSI Management Framework: Overview

18

Keimyung University

Systems Mgmt Functions (4)• Workload Monitoring

– supports the monitoring of attributes of MOs that relate to the performance of a resource

• Test Management– supports the management of confidence and

diagnostic test procedures

• Summarization– supports the definition of statistical measures to be

applied to attributes and the reporting of summarized information
