Dear Parents, Caregivers and Children,

This moment from Monday’s John Burland Concert captures the enthusiasm of our children as they

enjoyed interacting with one of Australia’s finest singers of religious songs. I sincerely thank Ms

McPherson and Mrs Mifsud for organising this enjoyable sing-a-long. It was lovely to meet a man

whose work we admire (and use often).

Taking Action for the Lost Dogs Home

Congratulations to Chloe Medic for taking her Inquiry Unit to a new level by

collecting blankets and towels for the Lost Dogs Home. Taking action is an

important part of inquiry learning and the people from the Lost Dogs Home

were really pleased to be contacted by Chloe. Her initiative will support the

care of lots of dogs as they await new homes with loving families. Thankyou

to those families who supported Chloe in her quest by donating goods. Chloe

was photographed for the local paper and we are yet to see the story appear.

Long Service Leave

Miss Elda Pilatti and Mrs. Colleen McCambridge are presently enjoying

some Long Service Leave and after the holidays, Mrs Schmidt will be

taking three weeks of well-deserved LSL as well. We wish them all well.

Let Your Light Shine No-one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all

in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and

A big congratulations to Premiership-winning U12s from Brunswick Hockey

Club. They defeated Werribee 3-1! The team featured St Monica's students

Charles Barrett 3B, Jude Barrett 1C, Benjamin Maltman 3M and Xavier

Malcolm 3M who played in goals during the season. Coached by Phil Barrett

(dad of Charles & Jude). It was a superb victory given the

average age of our team was 9 years old and they were

playing teams much older!

Hockey

Taekwondo Amazing skills were shown by Julian Tabacco, Xavier Malcolm and Charlie

Arnold (all Year 3) whilst completing their Red Belt grading last weekend at

Professional Taekwondo.

Charlie and Xavier received their Red Belt Cho Dan Bo and Julian Red Belt

three.

At Shogun Karate’s recent grading, Bailey Miller (3M) won a karate medal for

"outstanding achievement" and a trophy for "outstanding performance"! Bailey

teaches the junior class for ages 5-8 and also finished his grading achieving a

black / green belt. His Sensei says that Bailey is a great help, and has good

technique. Excellent work Bailey!

Karate

Congratulations to Julien Staberhofer (4D), Patrick Dent (4D) and

Lachlan Gordon (4D) on obtaining their Black Belt (Cho Dan) in

Taekwondo. This is internationally recognized and registered with the

World Taekwondo Federation in Korea.

Obtaining a Black Belt is a 30- month commitment which teaches the

students about discipline, control and self-defence. It helps with

building self-esteem, improving mental strength and teaching the values

of health and fitness. Well done Boys!!!

In relation to last week’s newsletter item on District and Divisional Athletics, it was brought to my

attention that we have some additional students who have also qualified for the upcoming Regional

Athletics Championships to be held at Keilor Park track on Tuesday 11th October. My sincere apologies

for any incorrect information regarding the children who have actually qualified for the event. Our full

Basketball Well done to Caleb who won his Grand Final match representing

Aberfeldie Jets under 10 E grade vs. Keilor Village on Saturday. This

is Caleb's first ever season playing basketball so we are all really

proud of how well he played! Final score was 20 to 5 and Caleb

scored 7 points! Terrific effort!

And last but definitely not least, a round of applause for

the Grade 3 girls from St Monica’s! They proudly

represented Aberfeldie Jets who won their Grand Final

as well. Sensational job girls!

Regional Athletics qualifiers

Congratulations Anil

Congratulations to our friend Anil Mascarenhas

who was ordained to the Deconate on Saturday by

Archbishop Denis Hart. This beautiful Mass is the

last stage in Anil’s journey before being ordained

to the Priesthood in 2017.

Anil’s brother Roshan joined him from India and

it was also wonderful to see so many people from

his “St. Monica’s Family” present on the day.

Anil will now be known as Rev. Deacon Anil.

Did you know? Eastern Churches have always had a permanent

Deaconate, in the same way we have ordained

Priests and Bishops. In 1972, Pope Paul VI

restored the diaconate to the Catholic church,

open to married and unmarried men, as a

permanent rank within the Sacrament of Holy

Orders. In the Archdiocese of Melbourne there are

now married Deacons who have their own

families. Ordained by the Archbishop, they serve

as he directs. Often this is in a parish setting, but

it could be anywhere that there is a need. In

Australia, deacons bring God's word to believer

and unbeliever alike, they preside over public

prayer, baptise, assist at marriages and funerals,

they minister in schools, the military, prisons,

ports, hospitals and diocesan agencies.

Fr. Tony’s 70th Birthday

Congratulations to Fr. Tony on his impending birthday (which actually takes place during the school

holidays). On Sunday we celebrated this auspicious occasion in the Symons Centre. A large crowd of

merry Parishioners enjoyed every moment of the hospitality organized by Lesley-ann our wonderful Parish

Secretary. I was delighted to see parishioner Gerard Burke at the event—he is a professional photographer!

I was able to relax and enjoy the day while Gerard took all the happy snaps. I thank him sincerely for

allowing me to use his photos in the Newsletter today.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the members of our Parents Association who

responded to Lesley-ann’s call for volunteers to facilitate the hospitality at this event. I am always both

grateful and humbled by the generosity of our parents. To see the “St. Monica’s Parents Association”

aprons proudly on show throughout the afternoon was a testament to the spirit of cooperation and

generosity that underpins this wonderful group. My heartfelt thanks to you all and a special thank you to

the Captain of the Ship, Ange Horton.

Insight SRC Surveys

Thank you to the 86 families who have completed the online Parent Feedback Survey. We sent out

envelopes to 300 families and we warmly welcome any additional surveys on top of the ones completed so

far. If you plan on completing the survey, it needs to be done by close of business tomorrow (Friday 16th

September). Thank you in advance if you have time to devote to this task.

End of Term 3 and Beginning of Term 4

We finish for the end of term three at 1:30pm tomorrow. The new term begins back on Tuesday 4th

October. A reminder that Monday 3rd October is a School Closure Day. The staff will be working on our

School Review.

I hope you all have an enjoyable holiday. I’m heading to Japan tomorrow night and will be away for the

entire holiday break. I look forward to seeing the children back in Term Four. Until then, Sayonara!

Ahh...Happy memories from Hot Jam Donut Day

Teachers who love teaching … teach students to love learning! Here are some examples of passionate ‘teaching and learning' at St Monica's this week!

First Contacts Expo

It was standing room only …….as the Year 4 classrooms came alive to showcase

the learning that has taken place in their Inquiry Unit, entitled ‘First

Contacts’. There were visiting buddy classes, parents, grandparents, special

friends and much more! A group of girls, Sienna Rocci, Poppy Dennert, Sienna

Blackmore took the initiative to make some aboriginal inspired artworks and sell

them to raise money for Caritas. Well done, Social Justice in action!

Prayers

As I walked through the Middle School Building, I was drawn to a new display on the

door of 3L! The students, as part of their Prayer Unit in Religious Education, wrote

out a short prayer. One read, ‘I pray for a world where every child has an opportunity

to go to school’. This truly inspired me and reminded me to be thankful the wonderful

learning opportunities not only here at St Monica’s but across Australia. Great work,

3L!

Un Giro in Italia

Here is a group of students sharing their posters on ‘Un

Giro in Italia’......can you translate the meaning? It is ‘A

Tour of Italy’....the students were looking at maps of Italy

and researching some key landmarks within the

regions! We look forward to Italian Day early in Term 4.

Camp

The Year 5 students headed off on camp Wednesday morning - we were lucky enough to

receive this whole group photo and a great shot of all the attending staff members. Have

a great time everyone!

A total of 8233 books have been read, mostly out of school, by students at St Monica’s for the Premiers

Reading Challenge. To represent the 8233 books read by students in 2016, Evelyn Barun, Daisi

Kukuljan, Nicholas Padden and Noah Storace from Year 4 constructed the outline of these numerals in

our library.

While they were keen to take 8233 books from the shelves, Ms Angela’s reaction to this suggestion

convinced them to use their mathematical skills to collaboratively problem-solve and find a different way

to represent the total number of books read.

Can you see the MAB blocks on the letters A & B?

Each block represents 1000 books.

I wonder what processes these students used to distribute the other 233 books evenly across each

numeral on the floor?

With Luke This week we continue on from last week’s review of the All Australian team.

The first forward pocket is the magician Eddie Betts. After Carlton drafted him in 2004 he has since played 251

games and this year he has played 22 games. He has kicked the third most amount of goals in the AFL and some of

them have been magical. Eddie has gone from an average forward pocket at Carlton and in the past two years he

has made himself the best small forward in the league. This is the second year in a row that he has been All

Australian and hopefully many more to come.

The next player has kicked the most goals in the AFL for two years in a row which is Josh Kennedy. Josh was

drafted by Carlton in 2005 and moved to West Coast in the Chris Judd deal and has played 187 games since and

this year he has played 22 games. This is his second All Australian and the second time he has won the Coleman

Medal. He should go down as one of the Eagles best full forwards of the modern era.

The next Forward pocket isn’t a small player, it’s a power forward who played really well this year and its Tom

Lynch from Gold Coast. After being drafted in 2010 the suns first year would be in 2011 he has since played 102

games. This is Gold Coast’s second All Australian ever after Gary Ablett. Tom was one of Gold Coast’s very few

shining lights this year kicking 66 goals with an average of three per game.

To round out our starting 18 players we have the one ballers. Starting off in the Ruck we have big man Max Gawn.

Easily the best ruckman this year with previous best Ruckman Todd Goldstein out of form and injured. He had a

break out game against North Melbourne’s Todd Goldstein when he had 18 disposals, 63 hitouts and kicked 2

goals. This is Max’s first All Australian and definitely has more of to come.

The next player is Brownlow favourite Patrick Dangerfield. After being drafted to Adelaide in 2007 he moved to

Geelong last year and has played 176 and has played 22 this year. The Geelong superstar may have many more

awards to come after his super year and could be taking home the Brownlow medal this year.

This next player is Patrick Dangerfield’s partner in crime whose name is Joel Selwood. Joel has played 226 games

after being drafted in 2006 and this year he has played 22 games. He was the Brownlow favorite in 2014 but didn’t

win it. He has been All Australian multiple times already and could possibly have 2 or 3 more in his career and

could possibly have another flag to his name after this year. Joel was named captain of the team.

To start the interchange bench we have the Bulldog’s young superstar Marcus Bontempelli. The youngest player in

the whole All Australian team was drafted in 2013 and has played 59 games since then and this year he has played

22 games. The superstar has had to lead the side with skipper Robert Murphy out with a knee injury and stand in

skipper Easton Wood also being injured. A great player who could have a lot of these awards coming his way and

maybe even a premiership or a brownlow.

The next player is the Sydney’s last player, is Luke Parker. Luke was drafted in 2010 and has played 123 games

and this year has played 22 games. He is considered the next player in line to win the brownlow if Dangerfield

doesn’t win. Was a very good pick up says Sydney Swans’ recruiter Kinnear Beatson and should turn out to be a

great player in future.

The next player is Richmond bad boy Dustin Martin. Dustin was drafted in 2009 and has played 153 games since

and this year he has played 22 games. He has had some issues off the field this year but has overcome them to have

a career best year. He has been one of Richmond’s two best players with Alex Rance this year and some people

consider him an outside chance to win the Brownlow this year.

The next player is the Bulldog’s former captain Matthew Boyd. Matthew was drafted in 2001 and has played 278

games since and this year has played 20 games. Matthew has had to step up this year with leaders going down and

help the young players. He has been a very loyal servant to the Bulldogs playing 15 years at the club. He has

played a terrific season in difficult circumstances and will go down as a great servant of the Bulldogs.

This week we look at the Bulldogs / Hawthorn game. This game could be an end of an era for the Hawks because

if they don’t win then they will end their streak of playing in 5 successive preliminary finals. If they win they will

play in their 6th preliminary final in a row and if they were to win the premiership then this team will go down as

one of, if not the best team to play AFL (they already are a great team). Everyone wrote the Bulldogs off last week

and they shocked everyone. The Hawks last weeks could already be through to the preliminary final if they had

beaten Geelong but ended losing the game by 2 points. The much talked about week off between the last week of

the home and away season and the finals paid off for the Bulldogs because the week’s rest allowed them to get

some stars back from injury and they managed to beat the Eagles. If the Bulldogs win they will play in their first

preliminary final since 2010.

Dear Children, Parents, and Families,

As this will be my final Newsletter before starting my maternity leave I just wanted to take the

opportunity to say thank you. I’ve really enjoyed being a part of your wonderful community over

the last three (almost!) years, and I hope that I have created a Before and After School Program

that children have enjoyed, and caregivers have felt confident in. While it is with indescribable

excitement that I look forward to welcoming our little bundle into the world; it is also with great

sadness that I say good bye to you all. I’m glad you can’t see me as I’m getting a little teary

writing this.

I have felt quite overwhelmed by all the beautiful and generous gifts and hand-alongs that I

have received, along with all of the kind words and well wishes; Clinton and I are so grateful.

Elizabeth (Liz) will be taking on the role of Coordinator, commencing at the start of the Holiday

Program. Some of you may already know her as she has helped out a number of times over the

past 6 months. I’m sure you will all make her feel as welcomed as I always have as she takes

on her new role. Good luck Liz!
