Tayport v St Andrews Utd • For years, neighbours Tayport and St Andrews United were in different Junior

associations and met only in cup ties but recent times have seen the clubs do battle

in league matches. This increa se in regular matches between the sides has

engendered a competitive edge to what have become keenly contested games. The

fact that generatio ns of Tayport youngsters have been , and are being schooled in

St Andrews , merely enhances the derby spirit which has developed between the

clubs.

Throw in a number of players who have played for both clubs , add a number who

stay in Tayport or St Andrews but don ' t play for their hometown club and you

have the ingredients for what shou ld be an exciting Premier Division game. The

fact that both clubs were relegated from the Super League last season and are

desperate to get back provides added spice to this afternoon ' s encounter.

Saints will be in buoyant mood after their 3-0 Scottish Cup win at Buckie last

week whilst Tayport will be anxious to erase the memory of a home defeat by

Bonnyrigg Rose in the same competition.

Joint top scorer for Saints this seaso n is Robbie Holden who has a place in

Tayport's cup history having scored the winn ing goa l in ' Port ' s 2- 1 extra time win

over Violet in the 2003 Tays ide/North Regional Cup final. Jamie Mackie had 36

games for Tayport in seasons 2011 / I 3 whi le the Whyte boys , Greg and Tom , are

resident in Tayport.

Tayport have three St Andreans, Ross Grant, Alan Tulleth and Gavin Wilson , in

their squad whilst Neil Docherty earns a living in the Auld Grey Toon. In addition ,

lining up for the home side will be Tayport's close season transfer acquisition

from Saints , Gary Sutherland, whose goal scoring explo its at Recreation Park over

the past decade or so were legendary . Ryan Suttie a lso wore United's colours

before moving to the Cann iepairt as did Allan Ramsay, who made a close season

return to the club with which he won 3 Scott ish Cup winners medals.

Manager Phil McGuire will have his charges well fired up, as like his opposite

number Davie Baikie , he knows the value of three points today.

Losing week's Scottish Cup tie was a major disappointment , especially after such a promising start when I felt our formation and tactics were most certainly causing Bonnyrigg problems. We started well and Gavin (pictured right) set the tone with a great stop down to his right and our two goals were well taken. The defensive lapse just before the interval spoiled a very good first half performance against one of the better Super League sides.

There were some outstanding individual performances in that first period but unfortunately, with us there's always the slip in concentration which allows teams a lifeline and this game was to be no different. Most goals scored in game tend to be in the first and last 5/10 minutes in both halves, in the main due to a lack of concentration and we duly obliged either side of half time to go from 2-0 up to 3-2 down and failed to recover from that. As I say, words like concentration, leadership and responsibility cover it although some may say more!

So, the "Scottish" is gone for another season and we must now "concentrate" on the remaining competitions, mainly of course, the League.

This afternoon we face St Andrews United and can I take this opportunity to welcome their players and officials to Tayport. With both sides played 8 games and St Andrews two points better off, our incentive must be to claim the points to overtake them and of course it is a derby which should provide an added incentive for us. We must look back at our first half performance last week as a benchmark for today's encounter and if we produce some of the same we can succeed this afternoon.

Tayport and St Andrews United - Ten Years Down The Line Tayport and Saints may only be 11 miles or so apart and 11rst competed with one another at Junior level over a century ago but since Tayport re-entered the Junior arena in 1990, there have only been thirteen meetings between the clubs and the 11rst seven were on cup business.

The llfth of those was almost exactly 10 years when the sides met at Recreation Park in a Redwood Leisure 2nd round tic. Tayport maintained their then nawless record v their neighbours with a 2-0 win. Henderson both goals. The teams that November 2004 afternoon were

Tayport's 25th Scottish Junior Cup campaign ended at the second round stage last Saturday , but only after 'Port had given Super League outfit Bonnyrigg Rose something of a fright , on the Canniepairt.

Dave Baikie's side performed really well in the openin g half hour , establishing a two-goal lead and lo okin g on course for another memorable Scottish Cup victory. Kevin Milne opened the scoring as early as the fourth minute , slotting home after some slack play by Bonnyrigg presented him with an opportunity .

Around the half hour mark , Tayport doubled their advantage. Grant Lawson raced clear and tried to chip the visiting 'keeper. While the finish wasn't quite what he would have envisaged , the attempt beat the 'Rigg custodian and ended up in the corner of the net , to the delight of the home support .

Unfortunately , the hosts were unable to reach half-time with that two-goal lead intact. The visitors started to enjo y more posse ssion and pulled a crucial goal back , five minutes before the break , when an unmarked Ross Archibald headed past Gavin Wilson.

Two goals early in the second half turned the contest in Bonnyrigg's favour, both goa ls coming from corner kicks. Now trailing , Tayport found it tough to make headway against the wind , although Paul Thomson did have a header cleared off the line.

In injury-time , Bonnyrigg added a fourth , through Kevin Mcleish , who netted from close-range , to finally put an end to Tayport's hopes of salvaging the tie.

While disappointing to go out of the 'Scottish' at this early stage , 'Port will now quickly turn their attention to the league campaign in general and today's derby in particular.
