    11. (a). A firm manufacturing a single product has three plants I, II and III. They have produced 60,

35 and 40 units respectively during this month. This firm has made a commitment to sell

    22 units to customer A, 45 units to customer B, 20 units to customer C, 18 units to customer D and 30

units to customer E. Find the minimum possible transportation from three plants to the five customers

(b). A head of department in a college has a problem of assigning courses to teachers with a view to

maximizing educational quality in his department. He has available to him four lecturers. Four courses

must be offered and after appropriate evaluation, he has arrived at the following relative ratings

    Answer any Nine Questions.

    1. State Hookes Law

    2. What are elastic constants?

    3. Define Poissons ratio

    4. Distinguish between rigid and deformable bodies

    5. State the different types of supports

    6. A steel cube of 100 mm side is subjected to a force of 10kN (Tension), 8kN (compression) and

5kN (Tension) along X, Y and Z direction respectively. Determine the change in volume of the block.

    7. Define thermal stress.

    8. What are the types of beams?

    9. Define shear force and bending moment.

    10. State the principle of superposition

    PART-B (2x16=32Marks)

    11. (a). A Simply supported beam of length 6m carries a UDL of 20KN/m throughout its

length and a point of 30 KN at 2m from the right support. Draw the shear force and bending moment

diagram. Also find the position and magnitude of maximum Bending moment

    (OR)

(b). A cantilever of 2m length carries a point load of 20KN at 0.8 m from the fixed end &another point

of 5 KN at the free end. In addition, a UDL of 15 KN/m is spread over the entire length of the

cantilever. Draw the S.F.D, and B.M.D.

    12. A mild steel rod of 20mm diameter and 300mm long is enclosed centrally inside a hollow upper

tube of external diameter 30mm and internal diameter of 25 mm. The ends of the tube on rods are

brazed together rand the composite bar is subjected to an axial pull of 40KN. If E for steel and copper

is 200GN/m2 and 100GN/m2 respectively, find the stresses developed in the rod and the tube. Also find

    the extension of the rod.
