Bespoke HomeBates Masi + Architects

To respond to the unique opportunities of each client and site, Bates Masi + Architects has developed an approach rather than a devotion to a particular style. Careful study of the needs of the site and owners uncovers a guiding concept particular to each project. It may be derived from the owner’s interests, the site’s parameters, or the character of the place. That concept is distilled to its essence so that it can inform the design at all scales, from massing to materials to details. The consistency of the concept is evident in the finished product. It imbues even small details and simple materials with meaning, thus making the mundane memorable and timeless. The result is an architecture that is cohesive, innovative, contextual, and full of details that delight.

Bespoke Home is the first comprehensive survey of Bates Masi’s 50-plus years of work, including several never-before-published works. It focuses on the firm’s residential portfolio, specifically second homes on the East End of Long Island. Using each house as a case study, the book documents Bates Masi’s design process with concept images, diagrams, and narratives for each project. This book demonstrates how influences of the physical and historical context, as well as the client, are distilled into a guiding concept for each project. Construction drawings and details show how this concept is implemented in response to the requirements of site parameters, budget, climate, and structure. Finally, never-before-published photos show how the finished product reflects the concept at every scale.

With a foreword by noted architectural critic Paul Goldberger and over 200 pages of photos and draw-ings of extraordinary second homes, Bespoke Home will appeal to architects and design devotees alike.

Paul Masi received a Bachelor of Architecture from Catholic University and a Masters of Architecture from the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University. He worked at Richard Meier & Partners before joining this firm in 1998.

Harry Bates received a Bachelor of Architecture from North Carolina State University. After ten years with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, he was in private practice in New York City for 17 years before moving the firm to Water Mill on the East End in 1980.

Paul Goldberger is a Contributing Editor at Vanity Fair. From 1997 through 2011, he served as the Architecture Critic for The New Yorker, where he wrote the magazine’s celebrated “Sky Line” column. He also holds the Joseph Urban Chair in Design and Architecture at The New School in New York City. He was formerly Dean of the Parsons school of design, a division of The New School. He began his career at The New York Times, where in 1984 his architecture criticism was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Distinguished Criticism, the highest award in journalism.

NakedThe Architecture of Guy Peterson

This landmark volume documents the stunning work of Guy Peterson, who has spent his life pursuing and developing a rich architectural vision carefully tuned to the demands and opportunities afforded by the unique features of Florida and his design-by-removal process that has produced some of America's greatest coastal architecture. The landscape of Florida and its subtropical climate presents any architect with many challenges to overcome while maintaining its rich building traditions.

Guy Peterson, by his own example, has recaptured and redirected efforts towards an authentic Florida architecture. This book details the unique process by which Guy Peterson begins with the basics of climate, program, volume, and proportion and creates buildings of simplicity and power. The architecture showcased here is made from simple materials carefully employed to accomodate function, sculpt space, and capture light. Architecture that proves again and again that simplicity is the most powerful generator of architectural form. His is a naked architecture.

Guy Peterson, FAIA, is a lifelong Florida resident. A mod-ernist in his approach, the language of his architecture is honest and simplistic. His work is poetic, human, evokes emotion, and comes from the heart. He is the President and Principal Architect of Guy Peterson, Office for Archi-tecture. He holds both a Bachelor's degree and Master's degree in Architecture from the University of Florida.

Lawrence Scarpa, FAIA, has garnered international acclaim for the creative use of conventional materials in unique and unexpected ways. He is also considered a pioneer and leader in the field of sustainable design.

Alfonso Perez-Mendez is an Architect and Professor at the University of Florida. He practiced in Barcelona in 1980, and in New York since 1989 as a Senior Associate with Richard Meier, for whom he was the project archi-tect for the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art. He has written books on post second world war architecture such as “Craig Ellwood, in the Spirit of the Time” and “The Houses of El Pedregal".

Theisen HouseBRADENTON, FLORIDA

Site plan

The narrow project site, with double front-street setbacks of forty feet, created the need for a linear solution, while maintaining the goal of maximizing views across the large bay toward a barrier island. The geometry of this project carefully and purposely unfolds to allow for view opportunities, as well as separation of program functions. A three-story structural curtain wall system is used in areas where maximum views are available.

The program calls for a main house and a guesthouse. The main house contains the living area for the client, as well as a separate area for a live-in caretaker. A separate guest building is located east of the main house, and is connected by an internal vaulted gallery. The guestrooms enjoy views of the bay and a large, second-level rear terrace overlooks the rear courtyard.

Between the main house and the guesthouse is a private pool area and garden. This pool courtyard enjoys complete privacy from the street.

Behind the guesthouse is a large, private courtyard, anchored by two majestic live oak trees. A fifteen-foot grid was established between the oak trees to create an interactive garden, containing thirty-seven silver reflecting gazing balls, all located at precisely the same height.

This house represents calmness and peacefulness through its palette of nine shades of white, blue tinted glass reflecting the Florida sky and water, and white polished porcelain floors to reflect the water and sky within the house. The project is a careful study of positive and negative space, and creates an environment that is filled with freedom and light.

Freund HouseSIESTA KEY, FLORIDA

On one of the most private beaches on the west coast of Florida sits the Freund House.

The program includes a multi-level residence for a family of four. The family’s main living spaces are located on the first elevated living level, including a children’s wing and quarters for a live-in assistant. All living spaces enjoy spectacular views of the Gulf of Mexico and nearby Heron Lagoon. The master bedroom suite, exercise area, library, and guest quarters are located on the uppermost level. These spaces also include panoramic views and access to a rooftop landscaped terrace for outdoor living activities.

The project is designed to unfold behind the trees upon entry down the formal drive, which is on axis with a low wall, anchoring the sky and horizon. The project is essentially a concrete pavilion with a glass curtain wall. Colored cubes that are carefully engaged within the purity of the concrete frame and grid identify the various program functions. These cubes are defined by color as well as form. Concrete bridges connect the cubes on the interior. The colors were chosen to reflect those on the underside of a common shell, one that could be found on the beach within the site.

Hosman HousePALM ISLAND, FLORIDA

This house is designed as a vacation home for a family from Oklahoma City. Located on a remote tropical barrier island off the southwest coast of Florida, Palm Island is only accessed by boat or ferry, which allows it to maintain its exclusive privacy.

Consisting of approximately 4,800 square feet of living space, this house is the tallest single-family house our practice has completed. It consists of a ground floor, which is slightly elevated for the home’s entry foyer, as well as a covered terrace under the house for parties and looking out over the Gulf of Mexico. The second level contains four gulf front guest bedrooms all with private bathrooms and exterior terraces, a guest living room and an outdoor sleeping porch which doubles as the family ping pong room. Direct access to the lower level and the Gulf is located on this level through a private stair. The third floor is the gathering level that contains an open pavilion type space which houses the kitchen, dining, living, and tv rooms. This space enjoys a 180-degree uninterrupted view out to the beach and Gulf beyond. The fourth floor is the owner’s private floor containing two offices for the husband and wife, the master bedroom and master bathroom. A “port hole type” window in the husband’s office looks into the roof top pool and allows dramatic filtered light into the office. The final level, which is reached through an outside stair, is the roof level which is activated with a swimming pool, outdoor kitchen and bar and plenty

of space for relaxing and enjoying the dramatic views. Because of its height, the views from the top are not only dramatic to the beach and Gulf, but across the island and to the bay and mainland beyond.

The architecture is defined as a carefully carved large volumetric form that is broken into smaller elements that engage both within the large volume or project out to capture space and frame views. Along the south side, each floor opens to a “breezeway” that is typical of old Florida homes. This open space enjoys great breezes and is used also for dining and entertaining. The floors on all exterior elevated spaces and the roof are white concrete with imbedded shells and shark teeth that were collected over many years by the owners from this beach.

Peterson HouseSARASOTA, FLORIDA

This house, designed in 1989, was for my parents’ final home as my father neared retirement. The house is located on the site where my two brothers and I were raised since the late 1950’s. The property backs up to a private club called the Field Club. It was constructed in 1925, and was the winter home for Stanley Field of Chicago, the brother of Marshall Field. This club is located on Roberts Bay, which separates the mainland from the Siesta Key barrier island. This twenty-plus-acre site offers dramatic views from the house and distant vistas to the bay.

The program is for a house of approximately 5,000 square feet, and one of the fundamental requirements was for a house that speaks to privacy and controlled, internal site views. The house is a series of stacked and interlocking volumetric elements, which are oriented to take advantage of the east-to-west sun during the day, as well as create opportunities for privacy. A series of site walls become a part of the project, and reach out into the landscape to create private gardens and opportunities for places of peace.

The interior is a sculpted space with a variety of scale changes for individual living areas. The ceilings are clear cypress wood, and the floors are handmade Mexican tiles. The entry is carefully hidden deep in the entry courtyard to create a series of experiences as one arrives to the front door.

The Restorative HomeEcological Houses by David Hertz

This monograph represents over a dozen houses selected from the last thirty years, from one of the pioneers in sustainable architecture. With text by Michael Webb, this large, landscape-formatted book is beautifully laid out with striking photo-graphs depicting not only the finished works, but the unique construction processes as well. Each residence has a detailed project description and select drawings that explain the design process and how modern materials can be exploited to create self-sustaining homes, which work to restore not just the environment around them, but the people who call them home.

Architect David Hertz is the founder and president of David Hertz FAIA Architects, inc. and S.E.A., the Studio of Environmental Architecture, which he established in 1984. David is a founding member of the AIA Committee on the Environment (COTE) as well as the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) and was involved in the first LEED Platinum Commercial and Residential Projects in the U.S. Since 1990, David has been on the Academic Advisory Committee and the faculty of the UCLA Arc- ID Program teaching sustainable design courses. David has also taught at the USC School of Architecture, SCI-ARC, and Art Center College of Design. David has been serving on the Task Force of the Environment for the City of Santa Monica for over a decade, and is involved in numerous social and environmental non- profits worldwide.

Michael Webb, Hon. AIA/LA, is the author of twenty-six books on architecture and design and has written introduc-tory essays for many more. He is a regular contributor to The Architectural Review, Mark, The Plan and other Ameri-can and European journals, and has also written for The New York Times, Architectural Digest, and Dornus.

Nina-Marie Lister is Associate Professor of Urban and Regional Planning at Ryerson University in Toronto. Learning Through Practice presents the explo-rations of the architects and urban designers at Rogers Partners. Throughout 20 years of practice designing in cities around the country, the firm has maintained an attitude of curiosity about the elements that make up design. From the smallest detail to the largest impositions, their work pen-etrates sites and their stories to augment inherent conditions and find inspiration in the discovery of the unseen, the peculiar, the untouchable, and the immovable.

The book tells the story of how these designers acquire knowledge and expertise in what they haven’t done but are doing by making buildings, spaces, and things. Rob Rogers and Isabelle Moutaud use the lens of sixteen of the firm’s projects analyzed in twenty-two case studies to explore ideas fundamental to the practice, navigating from how small things can have mas-sive effect, proving adaptability in authenticity, and opening space, to revealing the unexpected, designing the invisible to delight, and engaging responsibly with inherited patterns. Essays and catalogued inspirations preface each chapter, while a display of large images for each project discussed concludes the book. Timber in the CityDesign and Construction in Mass Timber

Andrew Bernheimer is director of the Master of Architecture program and an assistant professor at Parsons The New School for Design. He is the principal of Bernheimer Architecture, based in Brooklyn. Bernheimer was a founding partner of the award-winning firm Della Valle Bernheimer, subject of the monograph Think/Make. He has lectured at major universities and institutions, and his work has been featured in numerous articles and publications.

Alan Organschi is a design principal and a partner at Gray/Organschi Architecture in New Haven, Connecticut. He is also a lecturer at the Yale School of Architecture and coordinates Yale's first-year graduate housing studio. Organschi has lectured on architecture, technology, and the ecological impacts of building at universities and public and professional forums in the United States, Canada, and Europe.

Andrew Waugh is a founding director of Waugh Thistleton Architects in London and a noted advocate for timber construction. In 2010, he was awarded the President's Medal of the Royal Institute for British Architects for his research into high-rise buildings in timber. Waugh lectures across the world with a focus on sustainability, timber construction, and the future of architecture and has taught at universities in England, Australia, Mexico, and the United States.

We all harbor particular memories of houses we’ve encountered and visited, moments and experiences that stay with us well past departure. Finding these nuances demands active listening — not just to the owner or client of the building, but to the site, the culture, the materials, and the house itself. This is exemplified in Listening, a profile of twelve houses designed by renowned architecture firm Bohlin Cywinski Jackson.

Alexandra Lange is an architecture and design critic. Her essays, reviews, and features have appeared in Architect, Domus, Dwell, Medium, Metropolis, New York Maga-zine, the New Yorker blog, and the New York Times. She has been a featured writer at Design Observer, and has a monthly Opinion column at Dezeen. She has taught architecture criticism in the Design Criticism Program at the School of Visual Arts and the Urban Design & Architecture Studies Program at New York University. During academic year 2013–2014 she was a Loeb Fellow at the Harvard Graduate School of Design.

Michael Cadwell is the Walter H. Kidd Professor and Di-rector of the Knowlton School of Architecture at Ohio State University. His exploration of construction as a transforma-tive cultural act extends across domains: sculpture with small buildings on remote sites and museums, collected as Pamphlet Architecture 17 (Princeton Architectural Press); writing with Strange Details (MIT Press) in which he exam-ines canonic works of twentieth century architecture; es-says, and lectures; and architectural practice in partnership with Jane Murphy.

Rick Joy is Principal of Rick Joy Architects, an architecture and planning firm established in 1993 in Tucson, Arizona whose work is widely recognized for its responsiveness to site and context and use of material. Joy received the 2002 American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Architec-ture and in 2004 won the prestigious National Design Award from the Smithsonian Institute/Cooper-Hewitt Museum.

Peter Bohlin is one of the founding principals of Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, which began practice as Bohlin and Powell in 1965. The firm’s success, and the professional recognition it has attained, are in large measure attributable to his design insights and unflagging dedication to set-ting the highest standards for all design work produced by the firm. His leadership and inspiration have established a culture of thoughtful, thorough design thinking throughout the practice, and he remains keenly interested in both broad conceptual thinking and detail expression, reviewing the development of design and documentation regularly with project teams. In 2010, the American Institute of Architects awarded Peter with the Gold Medal, the highest honor for an individual in the profession.

GenerationsSix Decades of Collage Art and Architecture Generated with Perspectives from Science

Generations showcases six decades of Herb Greene’s art and architecture informed by his interest in scienceand history. This “picture book” is organized to showcase large-scale images of Mr. Greene’s architecturalwork alongside his collage paintings and Armature drawings, in a way that reveals the unified philosophybehind all of his work. Its purpose is to tell a story of the important interrelationships between art, science, andphilosophy, which is described with simple narrative juxtaposed alongside these images.

WHEN MY DAUGHTERS WERE LITTLE, my wife and I would bring them to the library in this concrete building on Peachtree Street. They loved that the library was on the second floor, with large windows overlooking the High Museum of Art and the graceful treetops of the adjacent neighborhood.

Years later, Perkins+Will purchased the building and I had the distinct pleasure of working with many of the firm’s most talented designers to transform it into a model for urban regeneration. It is now among the most energy efficient buildings in the world, a first-class creative design workplace, a home for a museum dedicated to design, and a library to inspire future generations.

I hope to one day bring my grandchildren.

I SAW THIS BUILDING AS AN OPPORTUNITY to refresh the landscape of residential offerings in Atlanta. We designed the project as a vertical commons, a mini city within a city. Located in the heart of Midtown, right down the street from my office, the project responds to a growing demand for urban living in Atlanta in a way that redefines community.

The 35–story tower is made up of 392 residential units tailored for the Next generation of urbanites. To stand out in the booming residential market of Midtown, we focused on best practices in sustainability, generous and varied shared communal areas, authenticity of materials, simplicity of detail, and distinctive architectural expression.

With its stacked assembly of clear cubist volumes defining retail, parking, amenity, and residential areas, Eviva Peachtree creates a bold silhouette in the Atlanta skyline. A continuous, exposed, poured-in-place brise-soleil with translucent green panels defines the building exterior, providing effective solar control. From its ground level connection to the urban fabric of Midtown to the dramatic views from the shared decks and private balconies, Eviva Peachtree offers multiple levels for people to experience the energy of this changing city.

In its considered response to the globalization of culture, HCMA has consistently achieved an architecture that is expressive of time and place, and uniquely interprets Canadian values of open-ness and inclusivity.

The result of this extended study is Alluvium: Dhaka, Bangladesh, in the Crossroads of Water, a cross-genre book that incorporates diverse media and layers of narrative and analysis to encourage new readings and perspectives.

The book includes first-person narratives by architects and planners, documentary photographs, and maps and infographics that visually represent the intricate connections between people, water, land, and health in this delta megacity. The work proposes a new approach to understanding place that is interwoven with human interest—an intimate, collaborative, research-based model that holds relevance for both the developing and developed worlds.

Clare Design Works 1980-2015

Clare Design was established in 1979 on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. Lindsay and Kerry Clare, a husband and wife team, have been producing architectural projects for more 35 years. Their work has been consistently acknowledged at home and internationally for design excellence and environmental performance. They received the RAIA Gold Medal in 2010. In 272 pages, with photos and drawings (includ-ing design and construction details) Haig Beck and Jackie Cooper show 30 environmentally-sustainable buildings spanning 35 years of the practice of one of Australia’s foremost architects, Clare Design.

The Clares, practicing as architects on the far side of the world, approach their work with a philosophical position that produces beautiful, climatically respon-sive, low-impact, environmentally-sensitive build-ings. They achieved this working not from a body of widely accepted theory and practice but from first principles, applying native can-do empiricism to their designs. These buildings – made in partnership with clients – are demonstrations of this architectural philosophy. Almost from the inception of their prac-tice, their work was recognized and commended by their peers with architectural awards. Over the years their elegant and climatically sensitive buildings have been the subject of exhibitions, magazine articles, both popular and professional, and several books.

In 1976, Haig Beck was appointed editor of Architectural Design magazine. In 1979, he and Jackie Cooper launched International Architect magazine in London. The output of 40 years of writing includes books, chapters, articles, and critical reviews. Most of these have been jointly written.

Lindsay and Kerry Clare: Libraries, like town halls, hospitals, schools and markets, are prime civic institutions. Such signature buildings, more than domestic and commercial buildings, have the potential to help define districts through contributing to urban order and legibility.

The City of Melbourne Library at Dock Square is a key piece in the Victoria Harbour master plan. The Library helps establish an urban, civic character to the raw new precinct.

Designed on a heritage-listed wharf, the Library is a three-storey lightweight timber building sitting atop the wharf structure. Its placement avoids cutting into the original concrete beams below the deck, minimising its impact on the existing wharf fabric. Cross-laminated timber technology is used on the upper floor slabs, roof, columns, beams and core wall construction to achieve a building two- thirds the weight of conventional construction. Closely spaced columns allow the weight to be evenly distributed, eliminating need for any new footing in the mud of the Yarra River.

The height and placement of the building are determined by wind mitigation strategies to protect the new public space, Dock Square, and reduce the effects of downwash from surrounding towers.

The environmental goals of the building include a six-star Green Star rating and optimised passive environmental systems.

The Library is designed for twenty-four-hour public access, providing multi-modal information platforms and creative knowledge access. The library design moderates the placeless world of electronic data by fostering comfort, place-making and engagement with users.

The wall of louvres is a logical answer to the need for light, air, views and connec-tion to the landscape. The open glazed wall creates the feeling of living on a screened verandah. As children, both Clares had direct experience of living in louvred spaces.

Here, the tree canopy gives shade protection. The owners worked out how best to live in the house on very hot days: in the morning they keep the building closed for several hours until the thermal mass has delivered up all its stored cool, by which time breezes have arrived and the house can be opened up again.

Thermal mass works well in South-East Queensland, wherever it gets cool enough at night.

Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) technol-ogy: The stringers and the balustrades of the central staircase are formed up as a pair of beam-like units linked by the treads and risers into a single prefab-ricated structural unit that was craned into place (see p 1??).The sketch (left) is typical of hundreds of such drawings made by Kerry Clare when detailing the building.Below left: The CAD rendered drawings by the architects of record reveal the expressive deception of the stair- case. Regulations require landings between floors. The sketch section shows the landing pushing the lower flight forward in relation to the stringer-cum-balus-trade – reducing the effective height of the balustrade. The regulatory require-ments for handrail heights and solid balustrades are met with layers of glass and steel that slide over each other in a layered aesthetic typical of the Clares’ detailing.These details are drawn up in this CAD-rendered construction section, that also shows sets of false treads and risers under the real ones in the lower flights, which – in conjunction with the layered glass and steel handrails – allow expression of the balustrades as single architectonic units (photograph, far left).

Lindsay and Kerry Clare: We were invited to join a consortium to provide a design tender proposal for student housing on UNSW Kensington Campus. Approximately 1030 beds were required for the 1.8 ha site on the campus. At the outset we wanted to provide a framework for good social and environmental outcomes with direct connectivity to campus and to the streets bounding the site. The broad concept of the scheme fell into place quite quickly and remained intact through rigorous buildability and value management review.

Materials, structure and environmental systems are tied into strategic decisions. It had to be a cost-effective precast construction system, with precast walls and floor panels configured like a pack of cards, with no intermediate columns, thereby preserving long-term interior flexibility.

We made use of the plenum created in the hollow-core floor panels for ventilation. Walls are in Thermomass – a sandwich of foam insulation between two precast concrete panels: on 40oC degree days, the wall remains cool; on cool days it is relatively warm. Where Thermomass was not used, we provided a rain screen of composite timber battens to shade the concrete walls.

We designed long windows, like big louvres, and later agreed to use double-sided sliders to save costs. Although these were agreed, we were told that window areas were priced at twenty per cent less glass, and the number of sliding panels was later halved. Sun-shades survived: the development consent included them, although some windows on lower levels are without sun-shades. Some units on the through-site walkway, which are like motels for quick rotation visitors, were compromised by the removal of privacy screens and shading.

Socially, units are mostly five-bedders. This number works well for younger students. Some one- and two-bed units accommodate single and small family units and visiting personnel.

Units are grouped around a core. Each core is designed to achieve views to the street, the courtyard or the campus proper for orientation and connectivity. People feel encouraged to talk to each other from different apartments. The entry lobbies act as social nodes, with natural light and breezes drawn across the spaces.

Inside the apartments, living areas are oriented north-south or east-west. Bedrooms draw air through plenums in the slab, enabling cross ventilation without having to leave doors open. There are no single orientation south-facing apartments.

The campus manager enquired why the energy bills are so low. It is all built in.

The small, regional architectural firms working throughout the United States and abroad have a more profound effect on the built environment than the cultural imperialism thrust upon us, harking back to the Pre-Modernist movement of the last century.

Looking back 50-60 years we can find architects such as Bruce Goff; Oklahoma, Jack Hilmer; California and Al Beadle; Arizona, to see how their work influences architectural culture and generations of young students.

The Unshakable Search for Architecture is about the life work of Architect Michael P. Johnson, speaks directly of his regional buildings in both his native Wisconsin in his early career through the work after the migration to Arizona. It also expands upon his work in New York, Colorado, California in the US and further in Canada, Mexico and Italy. In addition, it examines the methodology of Michael’s involvement in teaching at the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture for 25 years. One of the few books that explore the benefits that good architecture can have on our everyday lives.

Louise Noelle was born in Mexico City, 1944, she studied Art History at the Universidad Iberoameri-cana, Mexico City (BA 1969), and at the Univer-sidad Nacional Autònoma de México (MA1988); presently she is working on her doctoral thesis “Arquitectos contemporáneos de México”. She was editor of Arquitectura/México from 1976 to 1980 and coordinator of the design group Praxis Mexico City from 1978-1980. She joined the staff of the Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas of the Univer-sidad Nacional Autónoma de México in 1981 and since 1982 has been a researcher at the Institute. She is involved in many aspects of architectural criticism, being a co-founder and director not only of the Comité International des Critiques d´ Archi-tecture (CICA) but also of the Mexican Association of Architectural Critics. Juhani Pallasmaa (b. 1936), Architect SAFA, Hon. FAIA, Int FRIBA, Professor Emeritus, Helsinki, has practised architecture since the early 1960s and established his own office Juhani Pallasmaa Architects in 1983 after having collaborated with a number of architects during twenty years. In addi-tion to architectural design, he has been active in urban, exhibition, product and graphic design. He has taught and lectured widely in Europe, North and South America, Africa and Asia, and published books and numerous essays on the philosophy and critique of architecture and the arts in over thirty languages.

Aris Georges is a design teacher, a graphic designer, and an artist. As a design teacher, Aris draws from European education, American gradu-ate studies, and over 25 years of apprenticeship in architectural and creative studios in the EU and the US. Aris promotes conscious thinking in architec-ture and design and his classes offer students the opportunity to expand their mental boundaries to explore and advance their ideas and vision. He en-gages his students through interactive processes and supports their development in striving to be unbound thinkers and designers.

interesó por la arquitectura aunque decidió no hacer estudios formales en una universidad sino directamente en la práctica; por ello en 1957 ingresó como aprendiz, al taller de William Wensler, donde se desempeñó por una década, aunque cabe agregar que en el los últimos periodos atendió paralelamente algunos proyectos personales, en su tiempo libre. Forzado por las circunstancias, fue tan solo en 1967 que presentó el Examen profesional, que le permitió obtener el diploma de arquitecto.

Desde sus épocas de estudiante, interesado en la arquitectura y las corrientes de la vanguardia internacional, había conocido a algunos de los principales exponentes a nivel nacional. Con Frank Lloyd Wright tuvo un breve encuentro en su primera juventud, cuyo fallecimiento en 1959, truncó su intención de ingresar como aprendiz en Taliesin. Poco después se acercó a otras figuras de la arquitectura, iniciando con un viaje a Bartles-ville, Oklahoma, para trabar conocimiento con Bruce Goff en 1961, y entablar lo que sería una larga amistad. Un año más tarde tiene un encuentro con Paolo Soleri, en Madison, Wisconsin, a raíz de una conferencia que este último ofreciera, y que derivó en un vínculo amistoso que perdura hasta hoy en día, que ambos viven en Arizona. Después vinieron encuentros con Victor Lundi, Paul Rudolph, Louis Kahn y Félix Candela, y mucho después la obra arquitectónica de Luis Barragán; también están sus relaciones con George Nakashima y Joseph Albers del entorno del arte y el diseño, así como con Donald Judd y Richard Serra; una conexión importante es la que estableció, a partir de 1967 durante la Expo de Montreal, con Bruno Zevi el connotado historiador y crítico italiano, manteniendo por muchos años una interesante correspondencia epistolar. En últimas fechas, el encuentro con Oscar Niemeyer, otro de los arquitectos que mucho le habían atraído, dio una dimensión particular a su interés por América Latina, donde México ha jugado un papel preponderante. Las enseñanzas de estos personajes que el considera sus maestros, tanto en diversos encuentros como por medio de numerosas publicaciones, son fundamentales para comprender el desarrollo mismo de su quehacer arquitectónico. Es preciso hacer una referencia a la idea que George Kubler presenta en su libro The Shape of Time, con relación a la interminable secuencia de ideas y objetos de arte, para poder explicar la correlación natural entre diversos artistas, para así evitar una posible crítica a la correspondencia de su trabajo.

El propio arquitecto Johnson confiesa que desde sus inicios se preocupó, no solo por leer con avidez sobre los que consideraba sus preceptores, sino por visitar la mayoría de sus obras, para conocer y aprender de primera mano del hecho construido. Este insaciable apetitito por saber y observar, lo ha llevado a una gran asiduidad dentro de la lectura y un constante deambular por el mundo en aras de transitar por aquellas creaciones que ha venido estudiando en libros y revistas.

Por otra parte, estas mismas inquietudes, y su profundo sentido de justicia social lo hicieron participar activa-mente en el movimiento de los Derechos Civiles, de finales de los sesenta. En particular se acercó al movimiento Chicano que se desarrollaba en California, preocupado por la situación de los migrantes, con un interés que

Site Specific is an investigation into how place and context affects critical design development in an architectural site-related programme. Architects were shortlisted for this project for their particular (and sometimes contrasting) modes of working with site specificity within European and American contemporary architectural practice. All the archi-tects selected are working at an international level within their field and display a high level of intel-ligence and sensibility within their designs.

This book offers the reader a chance to under-stand the deeper thinking of the individual inter-viewees. This insight can enhance significantly an appreciation of some of the key issues in contem-porary architectural practice today.The reader gains an intimate portrait of the con-cerns, thoughts and feelings of these architects as they reflect on their own practice in the midst of their working challenges and successes. It reveals a more intricate, individually nuanced reading of site, meaning and context. It offers the reader a series of studies in the form of interviews, which should inspire future and current architects to con-sider issues of context in greater depth.

Karen Forbes is fascinated by the interface of art and architecture. Her work involves examining the creative possibilities which arrive from this dialogue.

Born in Glasgow in 1962, she works between Edinburgh and Amsterdam, She has been the recipient of a number of international fellowships to support her research including DAAD, Christoph Merian Stiftung, Beleyer Foundation, Basel, Chicago Project FOF, RMIT, Australia and the Scottish Arts Council Amsterdam Residency. Recent projects include ‘Evolution Tower’ Moscow (2005-15) and ‘The Solar Pavilion’ – a meeting point for the visual arts (2011)commissioned for the Visual Art Festival through Scottish Government Expo Funding, Creative Scotland and the British Council. She is currently Professor of Art at the University of Edinburgh and focused on new developments in art, place-making, interactive 3D imaging and architecture.

W+: The Future (Life) of a Historical BuildingAnderson Lee

In the spring of 2012, the Department of Architecture at The University of Hong Kong conducted a series of Research and Design (R&D) studio within its Master of Architecture Program. One of the R&D topics, led by Mr. Anderson Lee, was to study and examine the potential role and development of a historical building in the heart of Hong Kong: The Old Wan Chai Police Station and Married Quarters. The students were asked to address on issues ranging from public space in contemporary cities to heritage conservation; and from design and building technology to sustainable planning.

This book recorded the research and the subsequent design proposals. They are by no mean the final conclusion on a complex topic as such. In the studio which lasted only for 12 weeks, the students tried to identify: issues of scales that inform and affect architectural decision-making; the role of stakeholders pertaining to development; the urban and economic forces which shape the morphology of the urban fabrics; a new way to integrate new programmatic elements within the existing urban fabrics, and finally, to design a mixed-used project on a constrained site with a given formal and tectonic logic.

The Old Wan Chai Police Station and Married Quarters remains largely uninhabited and its future yet to be determined. Under the current political climate in Hong Kong, it is almost certain that this piece of colonial past would sit idle for a few more years to come…

Anderson Lee is an architect, educator and curator. He founded Index Architecture Limited in 2000. The architectural practice encompasses multidisciplinary services on urban planning, architecture, interior design and product/furniture design. He has been teaching at the Faculty of Architecture, the University of Hong Kong(HKU) since 2003. Currently he is the Academic Director of the HKU Shanghai Study Centre and the Program Director of the Career Discovery Program (HKU). He was also the Chief Curator of the 2011-2012 Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture (Hong Kong).

Coop Himmelb(l)au: Dalian International Conference Center represents an architectural monograph, covering the new Dalian International Conference Center from the first concept sketch to the final building.

The edition offers a detailed insight of the work and design process of the internationally well-known architecture company COOP HIMMELB(L)AU as exemplified in this special building.

Besides high-resolution images of the final building from in and outside, the book explores the design process from the very early beginning to the final appearing as a recognizable landmark for the city of Dalian. The iconic Gestalt of this special building expresses the power of the content: a city in a city, it shelters a flexible conference hall for 2,500 people and a multifunctional opera with 1,700 seats at the core, surrounded by conference rooms and passage-like places for stopovers and leisure.

The shown material ranges from concept sketches, model shots over construction documents to images of the final building. An essay written by Joseph Giovannini, architect as well as architectural critic, introduces the reader to the history, attitude and design-related processes of COOP HIMMELB(L)AU, as well as examining China's pivotal points in history.

Joseph Giovannini is a critic, architect, and teacher based in New York. Trained at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design, he has written for The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, New York Magazine, Architect Magazine, Architectural Record, and he has taught at Columbia, Harvard, UCLA, USC, and SCI-Arc.

COOP HIMMELB(L)AU was founded in Vienna in 1968 and has since been operating under the di-rection of CEO and Design Principal Wolf D. Prix in the fields of art, architecture, urban planning, and design. Another branch of the firm was opened in the United States in 1988 in Los Angeles. COOP HIMMELB(L)AU currently employs over 100 people from 19 different countries. In numerous countries the team has realized museums, concert halls, science and office buildings as well as residen-tial buildings. Presently COOP HIMMELB(L)AU is working on various projects in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

Wolf D. Prix, born in 1942 in Vienna, is co-founder, Design Principal, and CEO of COOP HIMMELB(L)AU. He studied architecture at the Vienna Univer-sity of Technology, the Architectural Association of London as well as at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) in Los Angeles. Wolf D. Prix is counted among the originators of the deconstructivist architecture movement. COOP HIMMELB(L)AU had its international breakthrough with the invitation to the exhibition "Deconstructiv-ist Architecture" at MoMA New York in 1988. Over the years, Wolf D. Prix and COOP HIMMELB(L)AU have been awarded numerous international archi-tecture awards.

10th Dragon RisingICC's Impact on West Kowloon and BeyondRebecca Lo and SHKP Limited

Kowloon, or Nine Dragons, has historically been the Chinese flipside to Hong Kong’s Central, where British traders first set up trading compa-nies in the protected Victoria Harbour. After the relocation of Hong Kong International Airport from Kowloon Bay to Chek Lap Kok, the relaxation of building height restrictions allowed for skyscrap-ers to begin dominating Kowloon’s skyline.

10th Dragon Rising chronicles the development of the International Commerce Centre (ICC) and how what was originally just another office build-ing is changing the way Hong Kong residents live, work, play, and perceive West Kowloon as the new central business district. From Governor David Wilson’s 1989 policy address outlining a masterplan for a rail corridor linking a new airport to Central, to KPF’s initial design sketches for what became a mixed-use engineering marvel, to case studies of those who have chosen West Kowloon as their office or home, 10th Dragon Rising illustrates how ICC challenges the old order of Central’s dominance.

A native of Hong Kong, Rebecca Lo grew up in Toronto and holds a Bachelor of Interior Design degree from the University of Manitoba. She returned to Hong Kong in 2000 and contributes to Beijing-based China Daily, Shanghai-based LP Luxury Properties, NYC-based Hospitality De-sign, and Manchester-based Sleeper.

However, creating the memorable forms is one of the most challenging undertak-ings that architects and engineers face. Jigsaw City explores the phenomenon of growth in Asia through the lens of AECOMS's work to cre-ate new urban settlements of many types at many scales. From India, to China, to the Phillippines, the developments explored include regional infas-tructure corridors, transit-oriented city extensions, downtown redevelopments, new communities, mixed-use open space districts, environmental conservation frameworks and ecological res-torations. On display are the efforts of strategic planners, environmental and ecological planners, masterplanners, urban designers, landscape architects, and civil engineers to deliver the places and infrastructure needed by rapidly growing populations and economies. At stake is quality of life for millions of people, the rise of a new Asian middle class, and the question of whether frenetic growth can be brought into balance with natural systems already strained to the breaking point. The premise of the book, and of AECOM’s work in the region, is that an interdisciplinary placemaking approach driven by multiple perspectives holds the best hope for tackling challenges of such magnitude. Increasingly relevant in this work is the use of quantitative modeling and decision-making tools capable of processing the vast amounts of information at play as planners and design-ers seek the optimal outcome for projects under convergent pressure from social, economic, and environmental imperatives. Daniel Elsea is Creative Director for AECOM’s plan-ning, design + development group. Daniel has published numerous articles, reviews and essays on issues related to the built environment in publica-tions such as Topos, Architectural Record and Print.

Clare Jacobson is a Shanghai-based design writer, editor, and curator. She is the author of the book New Museums in China and co-author of Karlssonwilker Inc.’s Tell Me Why: The First 24 Months of a New York Design Com-pany. She is a contributing editor to Architectural Record, and her articles have also appeared in Engineering News Record, Randian, Architectural Review Asia Pacific, Azure, Landscape Architecture, and other magazines. Siew Man Kok and Cheng Pai Ling co-founded MKPL Architects Pte Ltd in 1995 after meeting while obtaining their bachelors of architecture degrees from the National University of Singapore (NUS).

John A. McLaughlin joined the firm in 2001 and was made a Director seven years later. Starting with small dwell-ings, innovative designs enabled MKPL's body of works to grow to include projects ranging in scale and type from high-rise residential towers, university buildings, a conser-vation shop house, and now several master plans.

The conception of the Dhivehin (local terms for the Maldivian) and how they thrive in the midst of the tourism's income can only be seen by a visit to the capital city.

Malé–the capital city of the Maldives is the living construction site of the country. The construction and design industry in the Maldives has largely been an automatic offshoot from the tourism industry–and we are still building every single day. Buildings play a large role in the diversification of the dreams, shaping ideals, and the ideas of the private and public lives of the Dhivehin.

Ahmar Mohamed is a poet, designer, producer, cultural enthusiast, and community expressionist. He was born and raised in the Maldives. He has a Master's of Science in sustainable community de-sign from the University of Heriot-Watt. He is the founder of PMO and currently the principal de-signer of the studio. He is also a charted builder from the Charted Institute of Builder (CIOB).

Every day is a building day. No need for an alarm clock, the next door construction site makes the best alarm. We used to live in a happily wondered beauty. We can all remember, but we don’t see it anymore in this uniformity. Loneliness, emptiness and separation are common in Malé. Before we could see where we grew our crops, but now there is a skyscraper. We are left to wonder if it is possible for us to stay and thrive.

Mongrel RaptureThe Architecture of Ashton Raggatt McDougall

In his contribution to Mongrel Rapture, the first monograph on the polarising work of Australian architectural practice Ashton Raggatt McDougall (ARM), Charles Jencks identifies ARM as one of a handful of architectural practices internationally that operates in a mold he describes as ‘Radical Post Modernism’. Eschewing notions of good taste and formal purity, ARM opts instead for an ‘architecture of ideas’. Drawing from diverse sources that range across everything from Le Corbusier to Robert Venturi, computer programming to biblical verse, ARM’s architecture has been alternately celebrated and execrated by critics and the public alike. Despite ARM’s radicalism and the attention it garners, the practice has also produced some of the most important public buildings in Australia, including the National Museum of Australia, Canberra (2001), Melbourne Recital Centre and MTC Theatre (2008), and the Perth Arena (2013).

Mongrel Rapture combines extensive photography and plans of all of ARM’s major buildings with essays from a range of highly regarded critics, including Jencks, Mark C Taylor, Leon van Schaik, Harriet Edquist and others. Part scrapbook, part critical exegesis, like the architecture it documents Mongrel Rapture is both confronting and thought-provoking. A vital publication for anyone with an interest in this practice and Australian architecture’s very particular strain of ‘Radical Post Modernism’.

Charles Jencks designs landscapes and sculpture and writes on cosmogenic art. He is known for his books questioning Modern architecture and defining its successors - Late, New and Post-Modern architecture, and is the co-founder of Maggie Cancer Caring Centres.

Leon van Schaik AO is Professor of Architecture with an Innovation Chair in Design Practice Research at RMIT University. He is a writer and academic with research interests focusing on spatial thinking, the poetics of architecture, urban design and the processes involved in procuring innovative architecture.

Harriet Edquist is Professor of Architectural History and Head of the School of Architecture and Design at RMIT. She is the author of a number of books, including Harold Desbrowe-Annear: a life in architecture (Miegunyah Press, 2004).
