Orlando Game Developers Compete to Create Exciting VR Games Orlando is known to be the vacation destination of the country, however, it is not widely known that it is also the largest simulation and training hub. It is home to the largest concentration of simulator manufacturers for the military and two of the top schools to study game design. This creates a strong community of software developers and programmers interested in getting involved in the simulation industry. Orange Technical College recently started another competitive simulation curriculum in a program called Launch Site. Students can obtain a technical certificate while learning how to design and build simulations alongside industry mentors. Talon Simulations is one of the twenty advisors who has had the opportunity to help apply real world experiences to mold the various programs as well as partner for various events. Talon joined forces with Launch Site to sponsor a one of a kind game jam for Orlando developers which allowed them to create experiences on the Atomic A3 Full Motion Simulator and Oculus Rift Virtual Reality Headset. Game jams typically involve one or two nights of developers hacking together software to present to a group of judges based off certain criteria with exciting prizes and the opportunity to build their professional resume. The “Talon Challenge” was different in that it gave the competitors an entire month to put together their experience. During this time, participants could visit the Launch Site campus and perform testing with the A3 simulators, Rift VR headsets, and even racing and flight controllers. When all of the teams reconvened with the judges four weeks later, some of the submissions included a Mario Kart style racing experience, deep-sea exploration, and even a turret simulator where you get to shoot at drones. Each team had the chance to pitch their project and provide Talon Simulations judges with a demo of the experience. The top student team and the top professional team were then selected based on the playability and visual appeal. It was an exciting and rewarding experience for everyone that made the event possible and it demonstrated the strong potential of the Launch Site Serious Game Challenge, which will continue being held every 9
