Orlandoisknowntobethevacationdestinationofthecountry,however,itisnotwidelyknownthatitisalsothelargestsimulationandtraininghub.Itishometothelargestconcentrationofsimulatormanufacturersforthemilitaryandtwoofthetopschoolstostudygamedesign.Thiscreatesastrongcommunityofsoftwaredevelopersandprogrammersinterestedingettinginvolvedinthesimulationindustry.OrangeTechnicalCollegerecentlystartedanothercompetitivesimulationcurriculuminaprogramcalledLaunchSite.Studentscanobtainatechnicalcertificatewhilelearninghowtodesignandbuildsimulationsalongsideindustrymentors.TalonSimulationsisoneofthetwentyadvisorswhohashadtheopportunitytohelpapplyrealworldexperiencestomoldthevariousprogramsaswellaspartnerforvariousevents.
TalonjoinedforceswithLaunchSitetosponsoraoneofakindgamejamforOrlandodeveloperswhichallowedthemtocreateexperiencesontheAtomicA3FullMotionSimulatorandOculusRiftVirtualRealityHeadset.Gamejamstypicallyinvolveoneortwonightsofdevelopershackingtogethersoftwaretopresenttoagroupofjudgesbasedoffcertaincriteriawithexcitingprizesandtheopportunitytobuildtheirprofessionalresume.The“TalonChallenge”wasdifferentinthatitgavethecompetitorsanentiremonthtoputtogethertheirexperience.Duringthistime,participantscouldvisittheLaunchSitecampusandperformtestingwiththeA3simulators,RiftVRheadsets,andevenracingandflightcontrollers.
Whenalloftheteamsreconvenedwiththejudgesfourweekslater,someofthesubmissionsincludedaMarioKartstyleracingexperience,deep-seaexploration,andevenaturretsimulatorwhereyougettoshootatdrones.EachteamhadthechancetopitchtheirprojectandprovideTalonSimulationsjudgeswithademooftheexperience.Thetopstudentteamandthetopprofessionalteamwerethenselectedbasedontheplayabilityandvisualappeal.ItwasanexcitingandrewardingexperienceforeveryonethatmadetheeventpossibleanditdemonstratedthestrongpotentialoftheLaunchSiteSeriousGameChallenge,whichwillcontinuebeingheldevery9weekswithdifferentsponsorsandthemes.
