Fiction8RACHEL BILLINGTON

Rachel Billington writes upmarket female fiction with warmth, substance and memorable characters. The reviews she

receives are second to none. ‘A challenging and exciting novel... a grown-up story seasoned with politics, religion and the terrors of breakdown.’ The Sunday Times. She has been president of PEN and is co-editor of Inside Time, the national newspaper for prisoners.

Maria and the Admiral

A richly detailed historical novel perfect for readers of Philippa Gregory and Joanne Harris.

June 1822. Valparaiso, Chile. British Admiral, Thomas Cochrane, has led the Chilean fleet to victory and as the news of the country’s independence spreads, a British woman, Maria Graham, watches from her house near Valparaiso Bay. Based on true events, this is the story of the ten months between their first meeting in Valparaiso and their parting in Rio de Janeiro – a story of two exceptional people who meet in extraordinary circumstances. Using research based on letters and journals held in public archives, Billington has written a deliciously rich and compelling story.

The Ill-Made Knight

The first action-packed tale in the new Chivalry Series, set during the Hundred Years’ War

William Gold comes into the world as his family slides down the social ladder. Whilst his head is filled with tales of chivalry, he is branded a thief and must make do with being squire to his childhood friend Sir Robert. Sir Robert is a knight determined to make a name for himself as a man at arms in France. While William himself slowly acquires the skills of knightly combat, he remains an outsider, until the Battle of Poitiers, when Sir Robert is cut down by the greatest knight of the age, Sir Geoffry de Charny, and William, his lowly squire, avenges him. But with his knight dead, no honour accrues to William for this feat of arms, and he is forced to become a mercenary. Scavenging a mis-matched set of armour from the knightly corpses, he joins one of the mercenary companies now set to pillage a defenceless France, and so begins a bloody career that sees William joining forces with the infamous Sir John Hawkwood and immersing himself in a treacherous clandestine war among the Italian city states. But paradoxically it is there, among the spies, assassins and hired killers serving their ruthless masters, that William finally discovers the true meaning of chivalry, and his destiny as a knight.

Jocelyne is 47 and runs her own dressmaking shop. She’s a bit overweight, her husband is very ordinary and her best friends are the twins who run the hairdresser next door. Jocelyn has reached the point where she is examining her life and measuring it against what her teenage self had imagined.

She doesn’t tell anyone about the win... not just yet... Without cashing the cheque she begins to write down her ‘list of desires’ - a new coat, a bathmat, a visit to her daughter in England. She goes in to the Chanel shop in Paris, thinking she could buy anything she wants but will a new bag really make her any happier than the sandwich her husband prepared for her that morning. Meanwhile, her dressmaking blog is taking off, helping Jocelyne to help other women.

THREE DAYS IN CHICAGOLAND:

1. The Sister

2. The Cop

3. The Killer

An exciting digital endeavour: an original e-book serialization of a trilogy of novellas.

The Sister is the first of a trilogy of original ebook short stories set in Chicago between 1956 and 1960, all of which are inter-related but are also complete stories in their own right. Each novella tells the story of the same murder from a different character’s point of view. The first is from the point of view of the murder victim’s sister; the second from the detective in charge of the case; and the third from the POV of the man accused of the murder. The testimonies of each character will at last reveal the dreadful truth behind the brutal murder of a young girl in Chicago in 1956.

Published over a period of six weeks the ebooks will each feature an excerpt from RJ Ellory’s next full-length novel, A Dark and Broken Heart.

A DARK AND BROKEN HEART

How long can a man escape judgement? A dark and atmospheric thriller from the award-winning author of A Quiet Belief in Angels.

It should have all been so easy for Vincent Madigan. Take four hundred grand from the thieves who stole it in the first place and who could they turn to for help?

Madigan is charming, resourceful, and knows how to look after himself. The only problem is that he’s up to his neck in debt to

Sandià - the drug king of East Harlem. This one heist will free Madigan from Sandià’s control and give him the chance he needs to get his life back on track. But things go wrong when Madigan is forced to kill his co-conspirators and a child is shot in the crossfire. Now both Sandià and the collected might of the NYPD are hunting him down, and the one cop assigned to lead the case is the very last person he could have expected. Employing every deception and ruse he can think of, Madigan must stay one step ahead in a battle of wits that will test him to his limits. Can he evade justice for his crimes, or will his own conscience be his final undoing?

Fiction14ADRIAN GOLDSWORTHY

Adrian Goldsworthy is a critically acclaimed, bestselling historian who has turned his hand to fiction. He is a born storyteller

whose historian’s eye for detail has enabled him to produce an outstanding series – Jane Austen-meets-Bernard Cornwell – set during the Napoleonic Wars. This six-book series will culminate with the Battle of Waterloo, with publication in 2015 (the two-hundredth anniversary).

True Soldier Gentleman: Book I

In this start to the series, we are introduced to the core characters – a group of British recruits, which includes Hamish Williams, a gentleman volunteer, and Mr Wickham, fresh from his dastardly exploits in Pride and Prejudice – who are given their first taste of battle. Goldsworthy’s great skill is to depict action-packed battle scenes alongside fascinating pictures of society and life in the Regency period.

Beat the Drums Slowly: Book II

Ensign Hamish Williams and his comrades are plunged into one of the most brutal near-disasters in British military history. The retreat to Corunna under the might of Napoleon is nail-bitingly suspenseful stuff. Goldsworthy evokes the chaos with his usual rich command of detail, to give a real sense of drama.

Fiction15ANTHONY HOROWITZ

Anthony Horowitz is perhaps the busiest writer in England. In addition to the highly successful Alex Rider books and the best-

selling The House of Silk, he is also the writer and creator of BAFTA-winning detective series ‘Foyle’s War’, and more recently event drama ‘Collision’. Among his other television work he has written episodes for ‘Poirot’, ‘Murder in Mind’, ‘Midsomer Murders’ and ‘Murder Most Horrid’.

The exciting new project from the best-selling author of The House of Silk.

The House of Silk was an international publishing sensation in 2011. Written with the backing of the Conan Doyle Estate, Anthony Horowitz achieved the difficult task of producing a first-rate mystery for a modern readership while remaining true to the spirit of the Conan Doyle originals. The spectacular reviews confirmed this, and the novel went on to sell well over 160,000 copies, with rights sold in twenty-eight languages.

We are delighted that Anthony will be working on another project for Orion. We can’t release any of the details just yet, but watch this space… It is certain to be one of the publishing events of 2013!

historical novels, including A Place Called Armageddon and Vlad: The Last Confession, based on the astonishing historical story of Dracula. It sold just short of 60,000 copies and was brilliantly reviewed: ‘A fast-paced, intriguing and beautifully-constructed thriller.’ Daily Express

The Fighting Man

1599. The future of England rests on one man’s shoulders when politics and passion collide and a volatile power threesome – Robert Cecil, the Earl of Essex and Queen Elizabeth I – threatens to implode.

Down on his luck and recovering from a month of excess, Will Shakespeare’s friend and fight-scene choreographer John Lawley is determined to restore his reputation and win back the heart of the woman he loves. However, the fates – and his own weaknesses – are against him, and when his past comrade the Earl of Essex, a man he’s been desperately hiding from in the taverns of London, finally catches up with him, Lawley is faced with the prospect of returning to his side to fight in the seemingly hopeless war in Ireland.

But when the feud between Essex and his bitter rival for the queen’s affection, Robert Cecil, reaches breaking point, Lawley can no longer skirt the action. As he becomes embroiled in a foolhardy scheme to oust Elizabeth I from the throne, Lawley must make a choice between duty and desire – a choice that could change the very course of history…

Graham Hurley’s superb twelve volume series of Portsmouth-based crime novels featuring DI Joe Faraday established him

as a premier league writer of crime fiction. ‘There is no doubt that this series of police procedural novels is one of the best since the genre was invented half a century ago.’ Literary Review. And now, French television (France 2) has turned the novels into a series set in Le Havre, starring Jean-Marc Barr as Joe Faraday.

Western Approaches

A brand new series from ‘one of the country’s leading crime writers’. Front Row, Radio 4

Detective Superintendent Jimmy Suttle has finally tired of the relentless struggle against the rising tide of urban crime in Portsmouth. He is transferred to the West Country and looks forward to a saner existence with his wife and two-year-old daughter. How wrong could he be? Soon he is investigating the murder of a long-distance rower in the county town of Exeter. As the job takes over, his wife becomes increasingly unhappy about the move, as she tries to juggle family life with her own new job, isolated in a picturesque but lonely cottage. As his marriage frays, and his investigation becomes mired, Jimmy Suttle realises that his rural idyll is an illusion and a detective’s career in the country is just as harsh and gritty as in the city.

Fiction18J.W. IRONMONGER

Here are a few things you didn’t know about Dr. John Ironmonger: he is a one-time world expert on leeches, author

of The Good Zoo Guide, climbed Kilimanjaro when he was just twelve years old and is in the Guinness Book of Records for the fastest reading of Shakespeare. An interesting name for an interesting man. The Notable Brain of Maximilian Ponder is his first novel.

The Notable Brain of Maximilian Ponder

Welcome to the weird and wonderful, and never dull brain of Maximilian Ponder.

‘Maximilian Ponder is lying face up, dead, on the dining room table in his own front room. This is something you really should know, right from the start. Max would also have wanted you to know that this is an Henri II style, French, walnut extending dining table, standing on solid turned legs with fretwork décor to the middle, also with ebony and sandalwood inlay, designed by the French furniture maker Nicolas Rastin and probably dating from around 1900…’

Could you record and catalogue every single memory in your brain? Is it possible to sit at a desk with pen and paper and to write down the details of everything you remember from childhood to present day? It may sound impossible, but Maximilian Ponder is determined to give it a try, and on his twenty-first birthday he shuts himself away from the polluting influences of the world to do just that. Thirty years later, his room is lined with leather-bound volumes of his handwritten memories, and his body lies headless on a dining table. What drove him to this bizarre obsession? What events led to his peculiar death? Where is his brain? These questions will be left to Max’s childhood friend, Adam, to explain to the police, but will anyone believe his strange and intriguing tale?

The Forgotten

A brand-new, page-turning thriller from the international bestselling author of The Straw Men.

It should have been the greatest day of David’s life: a trip to New York to visit his new publisher. After years of struggle it looks as though the gods of fate are going to lift him from schoolteacher to writer. But on the way back to Penn station, a chance encounter changes that. He bumps into a stranger who covertly follows him, and then, just before he boards the train home, passes by him close enough to whisper: “Remember me”. The stranger follows him back to where he lives, and it isn’t long before David realises that this man wants something from him – something very personal, that he may have no choice but to surrender. Dark Room

A new novel by one of the most intriguing and chilling voices in modern crime fiction. ‘Thrilling, compulsive and difficult to put down.’ Guardian

DI Andrew Hicks thinks he knows all about murder. He even gives it its own architecture – the bedroom, the boardroom, the bar or the basement – depending on the motivations of the killer. So when thirty-two year old Vicki Gibson is found bludgeoned to death, Hicks suspects a ‘bedroom’ murder and attention focuses on her possessive ex-husband. But when a second body is found, similarly beaten and too close to the first murder for coincidence, Hicks is forced to think again: the second victim is a homeless man with no links to Vicki. When more murders take place in quick succession, Hicks realises he is dealing with a type of killer he has never faced before, one who fits nowhere within his architecture. Hicks must search for patterns and reasons where none appears to exist. Then the letters begin to arrive...

As the death toll rises, the threat gets closer to home for Hicks. To survive, Hicks must face not only a killer obsessed with randomness and chaos, but also the secret in his own past. If he is to stop the killings, he must confront the truth about himself and the fact that some murders take place in much darker rooms than he ever imagined..

When calm is restored, the mob leader, Dimitri, discovers his daughter has vanished. Luka is the only man with the skills to find who could have stolen a child in these frozen white wastelands. Together with his sons and Dimitri, Luka sets out in pursuit across lands ravaged by war and gripped by treachery. Soon they realise that the man they are tracking is no ordinary criminal, but a skilful hunter with the kidnapped child as the bait in his violent game. It will take all of Luka’s strength to battle the harshest of conditions, and all of his wit to stay a step ahead of the Soviet authorities. And though his toughest enemy is the man he tracks, his strongest bond is a whispered promise to his family back at home.

33MITCH BENN

Mitch Benn is a much admired comedian and musician. He is a regular contributor to Radio 4’s The Now Show. Terra is his

first novel.

TERRA

An exciting SF debut from a master of British comedy.

No-one trusts humanity. No-one can quite understand why we are intent on destroying the only place we have to live in the Universe. Though there is one alien out there who think Rrth is worth looking at. Not humanity, obviously, we’re appalling, but there are some truly wonderful places on Rrth and some wonderful creatures living in them. But on one trip to Rrth our alien biologist causes a horrendous road accident. In the wreckage of their car our alien discovers a baby girl. She needs rescuing . . . And now eleven years later a girl called Terra is about to go to school for the first time. It’s a very alien experience . . .

Terra is a charming and hilarious satirical fable. A story about how odd and alien we are. And a story about how ‘human’ odd aliens are. It tells the story of a girl who grows up in a very different world, who gains a unique perspective on our world and a unique perspective on her new home. A girl who can teach us, and them, a lot. A girl living in an extraordinary world that is spiraling into a terrible war.

In the Empire of the Saviours, the People are forced to live in fortified towns. Their walls are guarded by an army of Heroes, whose task is to keep marauding pagans out as much as it is to keep the People inside. When a young boy, Jillan, unleashes pagan magicks in an accident, his whole town turns against him. He goes on the run. Jillan is initially hunted by just the soldiers of the Saint of his region, but others soon begin to hear of his increasing power and seek to use him for their own ends. Some want Jillan to join the fight against the Empire, others wish to steal his power for themselves and others still want Jillan to lead them to the Geas, the source of all life and power in the world. There are few Jillan can trust. With his parents threatened, his life in tatters, his beliefs shaken to the core, Jillan must decide which side he is on, and whether to fight or run . . .

Wolfson College before joining the Civil Service. He began writing fantasy and SF stories in 2006 and his work has appeared in Fantasy: Best of the Year 2007 and Best New Fantasy 2. Wolfhound Century is his first novel.

Wolfhound Century

A gripping SF thriller in a brilliantly realised alternate Russia.

A thousand miles east of Mirgorod, the great capital city of the Vlast, deep in the ancient forest, lies the most recent fallen angel, its vast stone form half-buried and fused into the rock by the violence of impact. As its dark energy leeches into the crash site, so a circle of death expands around it, slowly - inexorably - killing everything it touches. Alone in the wilderness, it reaches out with its mind. The endless forest and its antique folklore are of no concern to Inspector Vissarion Lom, summoned to the capital in order to catch a terrorist. A totalitarian state, worn down by an endless war, must be seen to crush home-grown terrorism with an iron fist. Lom was chosen because he is an outsider, not involved in the struggle for power within the party. And because of the sliver of angel stone implanted in his head at the children’s home. His investigations reveal secrets so ancient that only the forest remembers and catapults Lom into a perilous, life-threatening conspiracy.

Promixa

Proxima is a brand new novel from pre-eminent SF writer, Stephen Baxter. It is an awe-inspiring planetary romance set in the 27th century. Proxima Centauri, a red dwarf star, is the nearest star to our sun, and host to the world, Proxima IV, habitable by humans. Huddling close to the warmth, orbiting in weeks, Proxima IV keeps one face to its parent star at all times. The ‘substellar point’, with the star forever overhead, is a blasted desert, and the ‘antistellar point’ on the far side is under an ice cap in perpetual darkness. How would it be to live on such a world? Proxima will tell the amazing tale of how we colonise a harsh new Eden, and the secret we find there that will change our role in the Universe for ever.

BEN CHU

Ben Chu studied Modern History at Jesus College, Oxford and has been a leader writer at the Independent since 2004. He is

currently Economics Editor there. Chinese Whispers is his first book.

Chinese Whispers Why everything you thought you knew about the world’s most populous nation is wrong

A corrective to Western assumptions about modern China.

The West has been getting China wrong for centuries. Our perspective on this sprawling and complex empire tends to be skewed by our own insecurities and the assumption that in China’s rise we are witnessing the inevitable eclipse of the Western world. Ben Chu identifies seven common myths - or ‘whispers’ - that hold sway about modern China, and deconstructs them. Some, such as the supposedly inexhaustible Chinese appetite for work, have a long lineage; others are more recent, such as the myth that Chinese parents bully their children into success or the frequently asserted notion that it is only a matter of time before China rules the world. By examining the twisting roots of these assumptions and contrasting them with the reality, Ben Chu gets to grips with modern China in an iconoclastic and illuminating portrait of this profoundly misunderstood country.

Those who raise the alarm about the economic expansion of China are right about one thing: the Western world’s relationship with China will help to define the twenty-first century. It is time for the West to stop getting China wrong, and to stop listening to the Chinese Whispers.

JAMES EVANS

James Evans gained a PhD at Oriel College, Oxford, following a first-class Masters in Historical Research. He has worked as

a producer on several historical television documentaries for the BBC and Channel 4.

Merchant AdventurersThe Voyage that Launched Modern England

A Tudor voyage of exploration – an extraordinary story of daring, discovery and tragedy.

In 1533 a pioneering voyage was undertaken in an attempt to find a new, shorter route to China and its riches, skirting through the icy seas round the top of Norway and along Asia’s northern rim. Two of the three ships became trapped in an Arctic bay by the oncoming winter; the captain and his crew were discovered by Russian fishermen the following summer, their bodies still frozen in the thawing ice.

Sir Hugh Willoughby, the captain of the doomed ships, kept diaries which were recovered from his final resting place, and James Evans has used these to build a vivid account of the tragic fate of the two ships.

A third ship, commanded by Richard Chancellor fared better, thanks to his study of the navigational sciences that were beginning to transform Europe. He voyaged over a thousand miles by sled through the Russian wilderness to Moscow, where he dined at the court of Ivan the Terrible. Chancellor returned to London as a hero, only to be drowned on his second journey to Muscovy two years later. Yet, as Evans makes clear, his ground-breaking achievements laid the foundations for England’s subsequent expansion on the global stage.

Merchant Adventurers illuminates wider themes in the history of exploration, trade, science and globalisation. But, above all, it promises to be a gripping and tragic story of adventure.

Swedish by birth and educated in Britain, Leonie Frieda speaks five languages and is a member of the Institute of Linguists.

Her long interest in Catherine de Medici resulted in a biography that was a bestseller on both sides of the Atlantic and was translated into six languages. ‘This intelligent and well-researched biography of her is a worthy testament to Catherine’s formidable strength. Catherine de Medici reveals Frieda, a first-time biographer, to be a writer of tremendous talent and skill.’ Amanda Foreman, bestselling author of Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire.

The Deadly Sisterhood Eight Princesses of the Italian Renaissance

The rise and fall of the Italian Renaissance through the women who shaped it.

Mothers of popes and wives of princes, diplomats, warriors, lovers and savvy political operators, the eight remarkable women featured herein were among the most significant power players in fourteenth and fifteenth-century Renaissance Italy. Looking at Lucrezia Tornabuoni, Clarice Orsini, Beatrice d’Este, Caterina Sforza, Isabella d’Este, Giulia Farnese, Isabella d’Aragona and Lucrezia Borgia, Frieda explores the intricate network of blood ties that bound them together, even as ambition, love and betrayal set sister against sister in the brutal dynastic conflicts of the peninsula. Leonie Frieda brilliantly weaves their stories together in a sweeping hundred-year saga.

Adrian Goldsworthy has a doctorate from Oxford University. His first book, The Roman Army at War, was recognised by

John Keegan as an exceptional work, original in treatment and impressive in style. His monumental biography of Julius Caesar in 2006 has been translated into fourteen languages.

Augustus

From obscure teenager to Rome’s first and greatest emperor: Augustus’s rise to power, by an acclaimed expert on ancient Rome.

In 44BC, on the death of Julius Caesar, Augustus stepped forward to proclaim himself Caesar’s rightful successor. He was not yet twenty years old. Over the next ten years he consolidated his power in Rome, and finally overthrew the last of his rivals in 31 BC. From that moment on Rome became an empire, and Augustus its first emperor.

Adrian Goldsworthy’s biography is the first major book about Augustus and his legacy for well over a decade and is destined to become the standard work for years to come.

GEORGE GOODWIN

George Goodwin is a history graduate of Cambridge, where he was awarded a Foundation exhibition. He is a Fellow of

the Royal Society of Arts and lives in London. His 2010 debut for Weidenfeld and Nicolson, Fatal Colours, was warmly praised: ‘Vivid, humane and superbly researched.’ David Starkey.

Fatal RivalryPower, personality and the decisive battle for Renaissance Britain

The relationship between England and Scotland became defined by the biggest and bloodiest battle in British history: the Battle of Flodden.

James IV came to the Scottish throne as a fifteen-year-old widely suspected of ordering the murder of his own father. Chronicling James’s curbing of a nobility to whom regicide was second nature, Fatal Rivalry charts his ascent to the first ruler of a unified Scotland. It shows how he was able to outfox Henry VII, and how Scotland and England later signed a Treaty of Perpetual Peace, cemented by James’s marriage to Henry’s eldest daughter, Margaret Tudor.

But peace was never guaranteed for long. After the death of Henry VII, James’s ambition to become a great Renaissance prince soon clashed with the new teenage king, his brother-in-law, Henry VIII. The ensuing rivalry was a full-scale political, ceremonial and even cultural competition at a time of rapid technological, economical and geopolitical change, fuelled by shifting alliances with France and Spain, Popes and Emperors.

This book captures the importance of the key players in the story, as they bring the two countries inexorably to war. Fatefully it would be an error by James, that most charismatic of commanders, and in the thick of engagement, that would make him the last British king to die in battle, that would condemn the bulk of his nobles to a similarly violent death and that would settle the fate of Scotland.

LISA HILTON

Lisa Hilton was educated at Oxford University and lives with her husband in London. Her first book for Weidenfeld & Nicolson

in 2005, a biography of actress-turned-duchess, Lavinia Fenton, was a huge hit with the critics: ‘Hilton’s style is … positively edible.’ Observer

ElizabethA Biography

The definitive portrait of a brilliant and compelling monarch: Queen Elizabeth I.

It is more than a decade since publication of David Starkey’s biography of Elizabeth. Assimilating new discoveries and interpretations from the academic corpus, Lisa Hilton takes a new direction. She argues that Elizabeth’s royalty negated her gender, and that the queen regarded herself primarily as a prince. Hilton carefully grounds this approach in contemporary Renaissance theory, and in turn provides a fresh perspective on Elizabeth’s emotional and sexual life, as well as her drive to fashion England as a Renaissance state. Elizabeth was not merely an exceptional woman, but an exceptional ruler, and Lisa Hilton redefines English history with this vibrant and utterly comprehensive account of her life and times.

60ROBERT HUTCHINSON

Robert Hutchinson has made his name as a popular historian with several critically acclaimed and commercially successful

books on Tudor history. The Daily Express on The Last Days of Henry VIII said ‘the scholarship of this book is meticulous… Hutchinson brilliantly conveys the atmosphere of terror and provides an across-the-spectrum grand-slam portrait of the second Tudor monarch. No-one writing about Henry VIII in the future will be able to ignore this magnificent book.’

The Spanish Armada

A dramatic blow-by-blow account of the defeat of the Spanish Armada by the English fleet.

Robert Hutchinson’s tautly-written book is the first to examine the dramatic sea battles of 1588 for intelligence, using everything from contemporary eye-witness accounts to papers held by the national archives in both Spain and the United Kingdom. Contrary to poular theory, the Armada was not defeated by superior English force – in fact, Elizabeth I’s parsimony meant that her ships had no munitions left by the time the Armada had fought its way up to the south coast of England. In reality it was a combination of inclement weather and bad luck that landed the killer blow on the Spanish forces, and of the 125 Spanish ships that set sail against England, only 60 limped home – the rest sank or were wrecked with barely a shot fired.

61BERNARD LEWIS

Bernard Lewis, who was born in London in 1916, is Emeritus Professor of Near Eastern Studies at Princeton University. He

was formerly Professor of Middle Eastern History at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London between 1949 and 1974. He is regarded as one of the West’s leading scholars of the Middle East.

Notes on a Century Reflections of a Middle East Historian

The memoirs of the greatest living historian of the Middle East.

Notes on a Century is a great historian’s vivid and insightful reflection on his life, from his childhood as a confident, clever little boy to his energetic old age in the present day. Coming from a relatively secular anglicised Jewish family, Bernard Lewis’s interest in the Middle East seemed to be innate rather than a reflection of his own personal history. His insistence on the importance of the primary source was one of his motivating factors in learning so many languages fluently. His academic life was interrupted by the Second World War, but his language skills and knowledge base were put to good use in the Secret Service. Although his primary historical focus is on the Ottoman Empire, his expertise and language knowledge led to his involvement in the modern-day Middle Eastern conflict. His list of contacts and connections is truly impressive, and he has been in touch with most of the main political players of the region.

This is not only a fascinating memoir but addresses the uniquely difficult recent history of the Middle East from a wise and superbly well-informed perspective.

the Hillsborough disaster and the death of Princess Diana.

The Assassination of the PresidentThe Mysterious Death of John F Kennedy

Astounding and convincing inquiry into the assassination of uS president John F Kennedy in Texas in 1963.

Published to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the assassination, Lightbown’s book takes advantage of the new information that has emerged since the passing of President Clinton’s JFK Act. Even as the anniversary approaches, there is still no definitive answer as to who killed Kennedy. The argument rages between those who believe the official version – that he was killed by Lee Harvey Oswald, acting alone – and those who believe the President was a victim of a conspiracy. Chris Lightbown’s masterly book is the first to use the network of high-quality but little-known independent researchers whose findings have been largely ignored by the mainstream media. The author dismisses bizarre conspiracy theories to allow the extraordinary evidence to speak for itself.

63IAN MACKERSEY

Ian Mackersey is a writer and documentary film-maker, as well as author of several aviation biographies.

No Empty ChairsThe Short and Heroic Lives of the Young Aviators Who Fought and Died in the First World War

The 1914-18 conflict, narrated by the men whose combat was not in the trenches, but in the air.

In the spring of 1917, when the world’s first great air war was at its height, British squadrons were losing 200 pilots a month, and the life expectancy for a British pilot engaged in combat was a mere eleven days.

No Empty Chairs illustrates the devastating emotional impact of the air war on the participants and their families in a narrative enriched by their private correspondence, diaries, reports and interviews. The pilots of these rudimentary open-cockpit biplanes, made of wood and fabric, initiated aerial combat tactics so effective that they were used to deadly effect in the Second World War.

64STEVEN MITHEN

Steven Mithen, a renowned archaeologist and pre-historian, is Dean of Science and Professor of Archaeology at the

University of Reading. In 2004 he was elected a Fellow of the British Academy. His earlier works have been much appreciated, garnering glorious reviews, for example, the Observer wrote, ofThe Prehistory of the Mind, ‘An accessible, very well written, provocative and most valuable book.’

ThirstWater and Power in the Ancient World

A pioneering work on how water has influenced and changed society and civilisation.

While different civilisations have varied in their beliefs, knowledge, technology, diet and so forth, the need to drink is a universal requirement, making water the great common denominator. The rise and fall of any civilisation has always depended on its ability to harness and manage water, and it has often been one of the great drivers of historical change, leading to some of the most remarkable engineering projects of the ancient world. Steven Mithen examines the history of water in the ancient world, using examples from a five year archaeological research project in the Jordan Valley to discover exactly what happened to water in the ancient world, and how its domestication changed society at all levels. From the first flushing toilets in the Minoan centre of Knossos, to the viaducts of Petra; from the fountains of Jerash, in what is now Jordan, to the bath houses of the Greeks and Romans: water and its management has been the constant factor in an ever-evolving world.

65RICHARD MORRIS

Born in 1947 Richard Morris grew up in Birmingham and studied English at Oxford. Morris’s research on medieval and

20th-century themes is reflected in writing that includes five books of history and historical biography. He is Professor of Conflict and Culture at the University of Huddersfield.

Time’s Anvil England, Archaeology and the Imagination

A unique, lyrical rediscovery of the history of England.

Richard Morris brilliantly weaves a series of interconnecting studies of apparently unrelated things and periods that are normally considered in isolation. In the process he re-examines aspects of England’s story from the end of the last glacial period 12,500 years ago to the present, touching upon such things as Britain’s apparent emptiness for long stretches of deep prehistory, battlefields, and the human element of the Industrial Revolution. Combining the personal with the academic, amalgamating literature and myth with science, and reflecting on how and why archaeology goes about its business, the result is a fresh account of who the English are.

66TOM NEIL

Thomas Francis Neil is a famed World War II RAF fighter pilot ace and one of the few remaining survivors of the Battle of

Britain. After joining the RAF in 1938 at the age of 18, Neil was called up to full-time service at the outbreak of war. He retired from the RAF in 1964 with the rank of Wing Commander.

The Silver Spitfire

A brilliantly vivid WWII memoir by one of ‘The Few’ fighter pilots.

Following the D-Day landings, Battle of Britain hero Tom Neil was assigned as an RAF liaison to an American fighter squadron. As the Allies pushed east, Neil commandeered an abandoned Spitfire as his own personal aeroplane. Erasing any evidence of its provenance and stripping it down to bare metal, it became the RAF’s only Silver Spitfire.

Alongside his US comrades, he took the Silver Spitfire into battle until, with the war’s end, he was forced to make a difficult decision. Faced with too many questions about the mysterious rogue fighter, he contemplated increasingly desperate measures to offload it, including bailing out mid-Channel. He eventually left the Spitfire at Worthy Down, never to be seen again.

The Silver Spitfire is the first-hand, gripping story of Neil’s heroic experience as an RAF fighter pilot and his reminiscences of his very own personal Spitfire.

67NEIL OLIVER

Neil Oliver is an archaeologist, historian and broadcaster, best known as the captivating presenter of the award-winning

documentary series Coast.

Vikings

The truth about the Vikings by one of the most charismatic of the new historians.

The Vikings famously took no prisoners, relished cruel retribution, and prided themselves on their bloodthirsty skills as warriors. But their prowess in battle is only a small part of their story, which stretches from their Scandinavian origins to America in the West and as far as Baghdad in the East.

As the Vikings did not write their history, we have to discover it for ourselves, and that discovery, as Neil Oliver reveals, tells an extraordinary story of a people who, from the brink of destruction, reached a quarter of the way around the globe and built an empire that lasted nearly two hundred years.

Drawing on the latest discoveries that have only recently come to light, Neil Oliver goes on the trail of the real Vikings. Where did they emerge from? How did they really live? And just what drove them to embark on such extraordinary voyages of discovery over 1000 years ago? Vikings will explore many of these questions for the first time in an epic story of one of the world’s great empires of conquest.

Red NileThe Unexpurgated Biography of the World’s Greatest River

A fascinating exploration of one of the world’s natural wonders.

From his back garden Robert Twigger can see kingfishers swooping and crocodiles emerging from the grey-green expanse of the Nile. Never-ending, as wide as a lake in places, the Nile snakes its way north to the sea. It’s a river steeped in history, and as Twigger searches for its source and probes its ancient, biblical and more contemporary existence, he uncovers the Nile’s bloody, murderous past. Whether tracking Cleopatra’s great journey up the river with Caesar, investigating the attacks of the Nile crocodile (the deadliest creature on earth), exploring the context of Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nile or that of the assassination of President Sadat, Twigger’s history of the river is hugely atmospheric, definitive and incredibly violent.

A unique insight into the modern RAF: this is the first time that the RAF has granted this kind of access to one of their Tornado squadrons at war.

During the Second World War, 617 Squadron earned legendary status. The Dambusters raid, the sinking of the battleship Tirpitz, leaders like Guy Gibson and Leonard Cheshire all sealed the squadron’s place in history.

In January 2011 the squadron, now flying supersonic swing-wing Tornado GR4 bombers, deploy to Afghanistan for the first time. Granted unique access to both the squadron personnel as well as 16 Air Assault Brigade on the ground, 617 tells the story of the Dambusters’ landmark deployment to Kandahar.

The author was embedded from pre-deployment training until the squadron’s return to RAF Lossiemouth in May 2011, allowing him to produce the richest, most gripping account of the modern RAF at war ever written.

Mapping PersonalityA comprehensive guide to the science behind human personality.

Who am I? Why am I like this? Why do some people habitually lie, or take silly risks, or fail dismally to resist temptation? We all crave to understand ourselves and those around us. Countless personality tests and theories have evolved to help us classify and describe people. Yet all these systems merely describe the way people are, rather than attempting to explain why.

The latest research in neuroscience and genetics is beginning to change this. Neuroscientists are now able to untangle the complex neural networks that give rise to ‘whole person’ characteristics to examine how one brain differs from another, and how such differences produce the enduring characteristic behaviours which we call personality. Scientists are fast piecing together links between gene mutations and particular behaviours. Risk-taking, addiction, ruthlessness, courage, kindness and compulsive violence have all been linked with specific variations in the genome. In between lie the brain processes which produce the behaviour. When all three are aligned – genes, brain and behaviour – we will have a predictive portrait of the individual.

Drawing on the very latest research, Dr Rita Carter explores how and why personality evolved as well as the prospects for transforming personality through brain manipulation in the future.

The Inheritor’s Powder A tale of poisoning, inheritance and betrayal

The Suspicions of Mr Whicher meets Victorian science in this compelling true story of family rivalry and arsenic poisoning.

This is the story of how an infamous murder case - when one young man was accused of poisoning his family in order to gain his inheritance - led to the birth of modern toxicology.

In the 19th century, criminal poisoning with arsenic was frighteningly easy. For a few pence and with few questions asked, it was possible to buy enough poison to kill off an entire family, hence arsenic’s popular name ‘The Inheritor’s Powder’. Yet if poisoning was easy, it was a notoriously difficult crime to prove. The popular press led to the nation becoming transfixed by the idea that danger lurked in every cup and on every plate. Thus, armed with a coffee pot and some ‘rat poison’ one potential heir saw his opportunity. The case became a cause celebre, and drew the attention of the experts. Michael Faraday asked a young chemist, James Marsh, to develop a failsafe test. This proved a turning point in the way such crimes were investigated - but years later there was a twist in the tale!

72 Hours

The nail-biting, true story of a Royal Navy mission to save the crew of a trapped Russian submarine.

5 August 2005. While conducting a secret mission thirty miles off the coast of Kamchatka, the Russian Navy submarine AS-28 became snared in the thick cables anchored on to 60 tonne concrete blocks on the sea floor. Without power, the stricken boat sank to the sea floor. Trapped 600 feet down – too deep to escape – her crew of seven had just seventy-two hours before their onboard air ran out.

Twenty-four hours later, after the Russian Navy had failed to save their comrades, the boss of the Royal Navy’s Submarine Rescue Team got the call: there is a sub down and the clock is ticking.

In the meantime the crew onboard AS-28 climbed into thick thermal suits to keep the freezing cold at bay. And waited. But as the first of them began to drift in and out of consciousness, they knew that time, and air, was running out.

Written with the help of Commander Ian Riches, RN, 72 Hours tells the story of an extraordinary, edge-of-the-seat real-life drama. It’s the gripping inside story of one of the most dramatic rescue attempts of recent years.

Using fascinating case studies of identical twins, Tim Spector draws gems from his exhaustive research project to show how even real-life ‘clones’ with the same upbringing turn out to be very different. Based on cutting-edge discoveries that are pushing the frontiers of our knowledge of genetics, he show us that – contrary to recent scientific teaching – nothing is completely hard-wired or pre-ordained.

Football Tactics, won a National Sporting Club award and was shortlisted for the William Hill Sports Book of the Year.

The OutsiderA History of the Goalkeeper

The first ever cultural history of the ‘loner’ between the posts.

‘Aloof, solitary, impassive, the crack goalie is followed in the streets by entranced small boys. He vies with the matador and the flying aces, an object of thrilled adulation. He is the lone eagle, the man of mystery, the last defender.’ So wrote Vladimir Nabokov – author, butterfly obsessive and goalkeeper. Camus was a goalkeeper. So was Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, James Joyce and even Julian Barnes. It’s safe to say the goalkeeper hasn’t always been a team player.

In The Outsider, Jonathan Wilson traces the sometimes dangerous intellectual and literary preoccupations of the keeper, and looks at how the position has secured a certain existential cool. He also takes a deep tactical and technical look at the history of goalkeeping to create a book of scope, depth and breadth.

Pep Guardiola The Biography of a Football Manager

Entertainingly perceptive biography of the hugely successful manager of FC Barcelona, Pep Guardiola.

As a footballer, Josep ‘Pep’ Guardiola was a much-acclaimed defensive midfielder who spent the majority of his playing career with FC Barcelona. He was part of the great Johan Cruyff’s ‘dream team’ that won the club’s first European Cup. After retiring as a player, Guardiola became a coach at Barcelona. In his first season, he led the team to the treble of La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Champions League – and became the youngest-ever winning manager of that tournament. The following season the club won six trophies in six competitions, playing some of the most fabulous football ever witnessed. The team comprises global stars like Lionel Messi, Xavi and Iniesta and continues to compete at a level its rivals cannot match. This book tells how Pep Guardiola did it, playing the Beautiful Game – and winning.

82PAMELA HICKS

The daughter of Lord Louis and Lady Edwina Mountbatten, Lady Pamela Hicks was Lady in Waiting to the Queen both when

she was a princess and following her coronation. In the 1960s she married the flamboyant designer David Hicks who became internationally celebrated. This is Lady Pamela Hicks’ second book; her first, India Remembered (Pavillion, 2007), an illustrated account of the Mountbattens during the Transfer of Power, was published in 2007.

Lady In Waiting

A magical memoir about childhood in India by the daughter of Lord Louis and Lady Edwina Mountbatten.

Pamela Mountbatten was born at the end of the Twenties into one of Britain’s grandest families. The daughter of Lord Louis Mountbatten and his glamorous wife Edwina Ashley, she was brought up by nannies and governesses as her parents dutifully carried out their public roles. A solitary child, she learned to occupy her days lost in a book, riding or playing with the family’s animals. Her parents’ vast social circle included royalty, film stars, senior service officers, politicians and celebrities. Noel Coward invited Pamela to watch him filming; Douglas Fairbanks Jr. dropped in for tea and Churchill would call for ‘a word with Dickie’.

After the war, Pamela truly came of age in India, when her parents were the Last Viceroy and Vicereine. This introduction to the country would start a life-long love affair with the people and the place.

As well as being a wonderful evocation of a magical setting seen through the eyes of a child, this book will be full of insights into the lives and loves of not only the British aristocracy, but Hollywood stars and politicians.

83JOHN LENNON, HUNTER DAVIES

John Lennon, founding member of The Beatles, died aged forty in 1980. Hunter Davies, editor of the letters, is an author,

journalist and broadcaster, author of the only ever authorised biography of the Beatles, and Lennon correspondent.

The John Lennon Letters

An international publishing event: the first ever published collection of the letters of John Lennon. Edited and with an introduction by Hunter Davies

John Lennon was a writer as well as a musician. It was entirely natural for him to put pen to paper whenever he had an idea, a thought, a reaction or a desire to communicate.

He lived - and died - in an age before emails and texts. Pen and ink was what he turned to. John wrote letters and postcards all his life; to his friends, family, strangers, newspapers, organisations, lawyers and the laundry, most of which were funny, informative, campaigning, wise, mad, poetic, anguished, and sometimes heartbreaking. For the first time, John’s widow, Yoko Ono, has given permission to publish a collection of his letters. John’s letters are in a way something of a mystery: where are they all? Over the years many have come up at auction, then been sold to dealers and collectors. Or they have been kept by the recipients. It has been a wonderful piece of detective work tracing many of these 150 letters, which are arranged in chronological order, so that a narrative builds up, reflecting John’s life. It will be visual - in that many of the letters are reproduced as they were, in his handwriting or typing – with the odd cartoon or doodle.

The Lennon Letters is fundamentally a book to read and study, providing a unique insight into the mind of one of the great figures of our times.

Amy

Sensitive, in-depth biography of Amy Winehouse.

This thoughtful, well written look at the life, death and times of Amy Winehouse will get at the real person behind the headlines as well as considering her musical legacy (something often lost in the never-ending talk of her addiction and rehab). That said, answers to the questions surrounding her final days will be sought too. Garry has the ear of individuals within her management and record company/PR, and plenty of music industry insiders, so the book will have weight/authority and genuine behind-the-scenes insight.

85THOMAS PAKENHAM

Thomas Pakenham is the author of the bestselling and critically acclaimed books Meetings with Remarkable Trees, Remarkable Trees

of the World and In Search of Remarkable Trees. He lives in Ireland and is chairman of the Irish Tree Society.

The Company of Trees

Thomas Pakenham has been an historian, a politician, a reluctant member of the aristocracy and the energetic guardian of a grand country house and estate. But it is as a champion on behalf of trees that he is best known. He has led expeditions to conserve seeds, and has planted forests; he has chaired tree societies, led protests against destruction and lectured tirelessly.

Each chapter of his new book deals with his adventures: the trees he has encountered and the often hazardous journeys to find them. He investigates likely future threats to the landscapes we take for granted, whether directly from the hand of man or from the effects of a changing climate, or from disease. A passionate writer, educator and entertainer, Pakenham brings both wit and grit to a subject of universal appeal.

86ROB YOUNG (editor)

Rob Young is the former editor of The Wire magazine, and author of Electric Eden: Unearthing England’s

Visionary Music.

No Regrets Writings on Scott Walker

A collection of pieces on enigmatic musical genius Scott Walker.

Scott Walker has travelled from teen idol to the outer limits of music. From his number one hit ‘The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Any More’, to his latest album in which he used recordings of meat being punched, he has managed to retain a passionate and committed fan base. His impeccable critical reputation as a serous and uncompromising musician has never been in question, as seen in recent film 30th Century Man, in which David Bowie, Damon Albarn, Jarvis Cocker, Radiohead, Johnny Marr and Sting all lined up to sing his praises.

Despite this critical acclaim there has not been, until now, a serious book about him. Rob Young has collated a series of features and interviews (some previously published, some newly commissioned) that celebrate Scott Walker’s life and work.

James Wong trained at the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew, and at the University of Kent, gaining a Master of Science degree

with distinction in Ethnobotany. He is the presenter of the award-winning BBC2 television series Grow Your Own Drugs, the tie-in book of which sold over 100,000 copies.

James Wong’s Home Grown Revolution

A revolution in the garden, a completely new range of fruit and vegetables to grow – and eat.

James’s idea is both simple and revolutionary. For a century and more gardening books have suggested the same fruits and vegetables to the amateur gardener. But there is a huge variety of delicious and often simple-to-grow common plants whose food uses we have forgotten. For example, plants grown for flowers, such as fuchsias and roses, have delicious fruits or hips. As the demand for home-grown produce increases, James Wong blazes the trail for overlooked plants that can provide a tasty, healthy and productive alternative to the humble lettuce and potato.

Gardening for a new generation that is ready for something completely different.
