Discussion #1Discussion #1

Cadet X is working on an essay for Spanish, one of his weakest subjects. A friend tells him there is a feature on the new Microsoft Word which allows users to directly translate into other languages. Cadet X realizes that he could type his essay in English then simply translate it into Spanish. Cadet X is excited about this new found ability; however, he is weary that it may be a form of cheating as he is not using his own Spanish skills or research. His friend told him that it isn’t cheating because it is no different than looking the words up in a dictionary. Since he is confused he comes to you seeking advice.

• What do you tell him?

Discussion #2Discussion #2Cadet X has a major accounting test in the

afternoon and needs as much study time as possible. Cadet X does not want to skip his morning Chemistry class, but also needs the time to study so he goes to class, signs the roll and immediately leaves to go study.

• In your personal opinion, has Cadet X lied based off what you have learned? Explain your answer?

• What advice would you give Cadet X?

Discussion #2 Discussion #2 RESULTRESULT

• Currently this is not considered an Honor Violation. It does, however, run contrary to the Spirit of the Code.

Page 17: Orientation This training program is designed to prepare rising honor representatives to supervise the honor system at the Citadel

Discussion #3Discussion #3

Cadet X is classified academically as a 3B when his classmates (mostly 2Bs) are granted their blazer and parade deck privileges. He has not been granted privileges yet because he did a brief tour of duty overseas with the military. Not wanting to be left out, Cadet X puts a “2” on his collar and crosses the parade deck and wears the blazer uniform

• Is this an “improper uniform” or an “honor violation”? Discuss

Discussion #3 Discussion #3 RESULTRESULT

This is something which your Committee will have to deal with – there is no “right answer”

Things to consider:• Intent to deceive?• What is the definition of lying?• Does the fact that “everyone does it” make it OK?
