Dear Parents/Guardians

Welcome to Emmanuel Catholic College

The transition from primary to secondary school is a significant event in your child’s schooling. At Emmanuel Catholic College we recognise the importance to make this transition as smooth as possible and as such we run a Transition program throughout the first week of Term 1.

Before this begins, we encourage families to book a time to get their IT device set up and ready for the start of the school year. We are running four sessions: Two on Tuesday 28 January (9am-Midday, 1pm-4pm) and two on Thursday 30 January (9am-midday, 1pm-4pm). It is expected that you sign up to one of the sessions. By doing this, your child will enter the transition week completely prepared for the activities planned and with an understanding of how their device operates.

Your child’s first week at Emmanuel Catholic College is a transition week and begins with a ‘Welcome Assembly’ on Monday 3 February. Please have your child at the College by 8:30am in the SPACE (Sport & Performing Arts Centre of Excellence). Throughout the transition days, we will be running an amended program to help your child settle into high school.

There are a few key points that you need to take note of that will occur during the transition week:

Monday – Students will be settling into Pastoral Care Classes and are expected to bring their device to school. Students will be shown their individual timetable on SEQTA as well as being allocated a locker & lock to keep their belongings in. Students are to bring their books & resources; Please make sure all books and stationery are labelled with your child’s name. Year 11 Peer Support students will be assisting the Year 7 students throughout this day. The House Coordinators will be running a House activity session in the afternoon. Please note students are to wear their summer PE uniform with their House shirts for this day.

Tuesday – every student will be participating in Form Class and group activities during the day. All students are to wear their summer uniform for this day.

Wednesday - We will be having swimming trials on this day therefore students are to wear their summer PE uniform with the white PE shirt. Students should also bring their College bathers, towel and goggles and remember to bring their hat and drink bottle.

We look forward to getting to know you and your child on our journey together at Emmanuel Catholic College.

Yours sincerely

Mrs Teresa Cosgrove Mr Michael Rathmann Deputy Principal (Years 7/8) Head of Year 7

YEAR LEVEL RESOURCE FEE A YEAR LEVEL Resource Fee contributes to miscellaneous student related expenses with the balance being subsidised by the College. The major items where the College utilises the collected resource fees are; IT infrastructure, subject levies, school excursion, student insurance, diary, College Annual, locker combination locks, copyright fee and general supplies such as tissues and sunscreen. Families with eligible means-tested family concession cards will receive a credit for the full resource fee upon application and acceptance of the Health Care Card.

BUILDING LEVY - COMPULSORY The Building Levy ensures the College is able to continue successive building stages to cater for the College’s growing enrolment and optimise the learning environment for every student. This fee is a compulsory payment and is not tax deductible. Families with eligible means-tested family concession cards will receive a reduced levy upon application and acceptance of the Health Care Card.

BUILDING FUND - NON-COMPULSORY (DGR - Deductible Gift Recipient) The Emmanuel Catholic College Building Fund enables parents to make a direct contribution towards the new Arts and English facility. This fund is a tax-deductible voluntary contribution.

NEW SITE ACQUISITION FUND (NSAF) - COMPULSORY The Catholic Education Commission passed a resolution for existing schools to contribute a 3% levy for the establishment of new Catholic School sites. As Emmanuel has received assistance in this way in the past, we are now compelled to provide this levy. Through our families the levy is set at $100 per family with the remainder subsidised by the College

USEFUL INFORMATION

ABSENCE FROM SCHOOL

Parents are requested to email – [email protected], telephone 9414 4051, or SMS 0418 605 675 the College by 8.30am on the day of a student’s absence from school. An explanation is required from the Parent/Guardian that must detail the reason for the student’s absence.

EXTENDED ABSENCE FROM SCHOOL

Parents are encouraged not to take their children on holidays during term time. Families who make decisions to remove their children from the College during the normal school term for extended periods of time and for the purpose of a vacation need to inform the Principal in writing of any extended absence. They also need to be aware that teachers are under no obligation to provide work for the students concerned. Parents need to understand that there is no substitute for having face-to-face instructional contact with the classroom teacher.

Please refer to the College Assessment policy available on the SEQTA homepage for information in regards to absence and its impact on assessment.

MISSED ASSESSMENTS

Without Penalty

Students who miss class assessments due to absence from school may be entitled to sit the missed assessments on their return (please see Assessment Policy) without penalty. On these occasions, the student is to sit the missed assessment, on their return to school, in negotiation with the classroom teacher. Typically, students will need to sit the assessment during the assessment catchup sessions, which occur on a Tuesday (3:15-4pm), Thursday (3:15-4pm) and Friday (7:45-8:30am)

With Penalty

Students who do not have an approved absence from school, will also be required to sit the assessment for diagnostic purposes. Whilst the student’s paper will be marked, these students will not receive a score toward their end of year grade.

LATENESS

Students are expected to be at their PC class at 8.35am, so please arrive in time to get to lockers and walk to PC class. Students arriving at the College after this time must report to Student Services before attending class. The students will sign into the Late Kiosk and an automated message will be sent to parents notifying them that their child has arrived late. Parents/Guardians are asked to provide a note with a valid explanation. Sanctions are put in place for students with multiple unexplained late arrivals.

Page 13: Orientation Information Booklet 2020 - emmanuel.wa.edu.au

EARLY DEPARTURE

Students who need to leave the College before the end of the School day, must bring a note signed by a Parent or Guardian detailing the time and reason for the early departure. The note must then be presented to the class teacher at the beginning of the lesson during which the student is going to leave. The note needs to be signed by the class teacher. It will then be taken by the student to Student Services and presented to office staff.

Parents/Guardians are requested to wait in College Reception to collect their child. Students must wait in Student Services until a Parent/Guardian has signed them out.

SICKNESS AND MEDICATION

Any student who is injured or taken ill must report initially to the Student Services with the permission of the classroom teacher. If the illness is sufficiently serious, a Parent/Guardian will be contacted to take the student home. All communication home must go via Student Services. Students are not to contact parents themselves to request pick up. The College can only release a student to a Parent/Guardian, or to a person authorised by the Parent/Guardian. It is essential for emergency contact information to be accurate. Any changes to contact details for your family must be updated immediately.

The College is not permitted to give students any form of medication unless parents complete the specified Medical Form available by contacting Student Services.

BUSES AND BUS STOPS

Some of our students access routes serviced by Transperth WA. Students catch the bus at the front of the College (on Hammond Road). These bus stops are supervised by College staff after school. For details of the bus times and routes, parents and students can use the Transperth website at www.transperth.wa.gov.au

There is also a privately run College bus route, which students can use. For more information regarding the College operated bus route see the following page on the College website https://www.emmanuel.wa.edu.au/enrolments/transport/

Pease note that the College will be purchasing students’ SmartRiders. The photos will be taken during the first week of School for all new students and will be ordered shortly after. We anticipate the cards being distributed to students by the end of February. In the interim, your child’s current SmartRider (from their primary school) should still be valid until March 2020. If your child did not receive one in Year 6, then they will need to purchase their bus/train fare. More information regarding SmartRiders can be found on the Transperth website.

USE OF MOBILE PHONES

Students who bring mobile phones to school are to store them in their locker for the entire day. No calls or text messages are to be made or taken during the school day. Mobile phones found out of lockers will be confiscated. Confiscated phones must be collected by Parents/Guardians after having a conversation with a Deputy Principal. Sanctions will be issued where students are in breach of this.

Emmanuel Catholic College Parent and Friends Association

As parents of the College, we automatically become members of the Parents and Friends Association of Emmanuel Catholic College (the P&F).

The function of the P&F is:

1. To build the parent community of the College through events. 2. Support the College by distributing funds raised by fundraising events

and the P&F Levy. • The P&F meet on the 4th Monday of each month. • Meetings are held in the Boardroom at 6:00pm. Entrance is to the

right of the Administration area. • Meetings are generally finished by 7:30pm. • Cheese and wine will be on offer for those who are interested.

We encourage all parents to attend the P&F meetings. They are held in a welcoming and friendly environment and can be a great insight to the happenings of the College.

You do not need any special skills to be a valued P&F member, just a willingness to provide input and come and see what is going on.

P&F meeting dates are always advertised in the weekly College Newsletter.

Our first meeting is on Monday 24 February 2020.

We look forward to meeting some fresh new faces in 2020. Why not bring a friend along too?

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the Emmanuel Catholic College P&F President, Mrs Kerri Muller.
