ORIENTATION BOOKLET
When International Students first arrive in
New Zealand, there is a lot of information
they have to learn about Kelston Girls’
College, living in a Homestay, education in
New Zealand, what Auckland and New
Zealand have to offer, plus much more.
The Orientation Booklet gives you a lot of
information about people who can help you
and it is full of useful information for new
students.

Greetings: Hello, Tena koutou katoa, Kia orana, Bula vinaka, Talofa lava, Hi,
Malo e leile, Namaste, Konnichiwa, Fakalofa lahiatu, Lei hou, Ni hao, Guten
tag, Ciao.
New things to learn: There are lots of new things to learn when you attend Kelston Girls’ College.
Living in a homestay.
Getting used to Education in NZ.
Different types of food.
The language and the culture.
The People.
All this will be new and strange for you at first.
Keeping things safe:
Avoid carrying too much money.
Always keep your school reports, passport and school information in a safe place.
Always have your homestay, International Student Administrator phone numbers on you at
all times.
Your time at Kelston Girls’ College:
Talk to teachers when you have difficulties.
Do your best to make new friends.
Make the most of all opportunities, in the class and out of class activities.
Join lunchtime and after school sports activities.
We are a very multi-cultural school, and our girls’ are very welcoming.

Late to school:
Go to the Student Centre and sign in.
If you are regularly late, your Dean will ring home and ask why?
Absences:
If you are absent from school, you need to ring the Attendance Office 09 8279647 and bring
a note on your return to school.
You cannot leave school without a note from your homestay, or the Health Centre signs you
out if you are unwell.
Doctor or Dentist:
Please inform your agent if you need to see a doctor or dentist, so they can make
arrangements.
You will need your insurance information, so please have it with you.
Attend classes:
You must attend all your classes and complete all your course work.
If there is a problem, see your Dean - Mrs Raghavan.
Working part-time:
You need permission from your parents and a letter sent to Ms Ginny if you want to work
part-time.
This will not be granted if your school work is not up to standard.
Certain procedures have to be followed.
Personal Property:
Valuable items should not be brought to school. However, if you do, you may leave your
items with Ms Ginny and pick them up at the end of the school day. This includes large
sums of money.
P.E. Classes – Hand over any valuables to your teacher before changing into PE Gear.
You may bring your mobile phone to school but do not use it in class. You can use this at
interval and lunchtime

You may bring your own device to school. (please note the school cannot take responsibility for any
damage or if you lose your device)
Lost Property:
All lost property goes to the Student Centre.
It is a very good idea to have all your clothing clearly marked with your name on.
Leave:
Leaving early to go on holiday is not a good idea. You will need a letter from your parents
informing your Dean if this happens.
Holidays and Travel:
Homestay Auckland will inform Ms Ginny if you are going away for the holidays. All
information pertaining to your travel arrangements need to be handed to the International
Student Office.
Photo ID cards:
Your photo will be taken at the start of the year and you will be issued with a KGC ID card.
It lets you get cheaper transport fares.
Stationery:
You will be given a stationery list at the start of the year. The Warehouse is the best place to
buy your stationery.
If you need to buy extra books for a certain subject, your teacher will let you know.
Uniform:
You can purchase your uniform from NZ Uniforms, 7 Rata Street, New Lynn, near The
Warehouse.
It is important to wear your uniform correctly.
The school rules for uniform are: no make-up, nail polish, dyed hair or incorrect uniform.
Only one pair of small earring studs are permitted and no nose ring.

The Kelston Way
Respect Yourself “Manaaki Tatou”
Post only information that you would be happy for everyone to see.
Write appropriately – no swearing.
Don’t post information about yourself that is disrespectful to you.
Don’t post information that reveals personal information – where you live, your age.
Respect Each Other “Manaaki Ratou”
Write and speak about others respectfully.
Don’t post anything that you would not say directly to an individual.
Use appropriate language – think about the audience – writing in Caps is shouting!
Respect the privacy of your friends and schoolmates – don’t share everything you see and
hear.
Delete any information that you see is offensive to you or someone else.
Respect the work of other people.
Don’t share any information that you know is disrespectful and hurtful.
Treat others, as you would like to be treated.
Respect your school community “Manaaki To Matou Kura”
Make responsible choices.
Use digital technology to support your learning.
Don’t share information about your school community that you would not say directly.
Respect the school rules and expectations about the use of devices.
Write in appropriate language for assessments and schoolwork.
Anything you post should make the world a better place.
In an Emergency:
Fire: A continuous ringing will sound and the words “Evacuate the building”
Action: Leave the buildings immediately, and walk quietly and calmly.
Assembly Point: Meet in your form class outside the hall. Your form teacher will explain
Lockdown:
Follow your teacher’s instructions.

Homesickness: It is natural to feel a little homesick and lonely when you first arrive. These feelings will pass
and you will gain confidence as time goes on.
Talk to Ms Ginny and Ms Kanayo.
Talk to your homestay family and ask questions if you do not understand.
Spend time catching up with your friends from your country.
Go out on the weekends and visit the sights of Auckland.
New Zealand Culture words you may hear:
New Zealanders are usually very friendly people.
Some people speak very fast, if you don’t understand, just say “Can you speak slowly
please?”
When you greet someone for the first time, some people may shake your hand – that is ok.
It is polite to talk to your homestay. “Hi” in the mornings and when you come home, and
“bye” when you leave the house (depart).
New Zealanders are called Kiwis.
Please use “thank you” and “excuse me” to be polite.
In NZ we have 3 official languages. English, Maori, and Sign Language.
