1 Oriel Davies Open Space Background Following successful funding bids to the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and Arts Council of Wales Lottery, Oriel Davies is planning to launch Open Space in autumn 2016. Open Space will be a creative hub generating and presenting a broad platform of cultural activity within a dedicated period. We plan this as a Pilot Project over a 2-year period, to run alongside, and in addition to, the Gallery's existing exhibition and learning programmes. Each year it will transform one of the Gallery's main exhibition spaces for a block of 16 weeks into a live, dynamic and fast-changing space, presenting a range of projects which will explore: short and longer-term artist residencies, film screenings, performances and performance art (music, live art, dance), new commissions, artist- and community-led workshops, demonstrations, professional training (portfolio and mentoring sessions); talks, presentations, discussions and displays. In the Open Space programme audiences and participants will encounter artists and participants working directly in the gallery to create a continuously changing environment, where an artist’s work will feature for a few days, to be replaced or joined by a community or student’s group’s creative work. This will include live art, performances, interventions, installations, workshops, discussions and debates. A guiding principle of Open Space is to develop new models of working and new ways of bringing artists and audiences together to deepen understanding of and access to the visual arts. The programmes will focus on direct contact between artists and audiences, the commissioning of new work, and active exploration of practice and process, resulting in a space that embraces and celebrates risk, experimentation and participation. Open Space will also develop partnerships in and beyond Wales, forging strong links and exchanges with artist groups and training and mentoring programmes. Open Space differs from Oriel Davies’ existing programmes by changing the exhibition gallery into a highly dynamic and fast-changing environment for experimentation, active participation and excitement: a space where risk-taking, debate and creative exploration are made possible. In Open Space we anticipate and will actively encourage that the boundaries between art forms will merge and the boundaries between artist, audience and participant will blur. For some aspects of the Open Space programme the artistic outcomes will be unknown and developing, and able to be carried on from one year into the next. This approach will encourage the gallery to be more fluid, flexible and responsive in the way we develop our programmes. As an example, in the Open Space first year, aspects of an artist’s residency will involve working with a participatory group – be it school, college or community: we will encourage the artist to develop a longer-term relationship with the group, resulting in the programme’s second year with the group and artist returning to develop creating their own project.
