The William Wrigley Jr. Company is an American company
headquartered in the Wrigley Building in Chicago, Illinois. The
company was founded on April 1, 1891, originally selling
products such as soap and baking powder. In 1892, William
Wrigley,jr. the company's founder, began packaging chewing
gum with each can of baking powder. The chewing gum
eventually became more popular than the baking powder itself
and Wrigley's reoriented the company to produce the popular
chewing gum.
The company currently sells its products in more than 180
countries and maintains 14 factories in various countries,
including the United States, Mexico, Australia, the United
Kingdom, Canada, Spain, New Zealand, the Philippines, France,
Kenya, Taiwan, China, India, Poland, and Russia.
In 2004, Wrigley purchased the Life Savers and
Altoids businesses from Kraft Foods forUS$1.48 billion. On
January 23, 2007, Wrigley signed a purchase agreement to

acquire an 80 percent initial interest in A.Korkunov for $300
million with the remaining 20 percent to be acquired over time.
On April 28, 2008, it was announced that Mars, Inc would
acquire Wrigley for approximately $23 billion.
Financing for the transaction was provided by Berkshire
Hathaway, Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan. Berkshire Hathaway
holds a minority equity investment in the Wrigley subsidiary. The
corporate headquarters, the Wrigley Building, is
one of the more well-known landmarks on
the Magnificent Mile in Chicago.
FOUNDER
William Wrigley Jr. was born in Philadelphia in
1862, at the height of the Civil War. His father,
William, Sr., was a soap manufacturer, and as a little boy, young
William carried a basket through the streets of
Philadelphia, selling Wrigley's Scouring Soap.
When he became a teenager, William took a full-time job as a
soap salesman for his father. He had a talent for salesmanship,
and he drove a horse and wagon from town to town, trying to
convince stores to stock Wrigley's soap.
William Wrigley Jr. struck out on his own in the spring of 1891
when he was 29 years old. He left Philadelphia for Chicago with
just $32 in his pocket and a dream of running his own business.
GOVT R.C COLLEGE OF COMMERCE AND MANAGEMENT Page 8
ORGANIZATION STUDY AT WRIGLEY INDIA PVT L.T.D
He also had boundless energy and a gift for seeing things from
his customers' point of view.
At the start of his new business in Chicago, William sold his
father's Scouring Soap. As an extra incentive to merchants to
stock the soap on their shelves, he offered "premiums" - free
gifts, such as cans of baking powder. Trouble was, baking
powder turned out to be more popular than soap! Rather than
give up, William switched to the baking powder business.
One day in 1892, William got the idea of offering two free
packages of chewing gum with each can of baking powder. The
offer was a big success. Once again the premium - chewing gum -
seemed to be more popular than the product it was designed to
promote. A year later, in 1893, William Wrigley Jr. introduced a
new gum he called Juicy Fruit. And so began the world’s most
popular and successful chewing gum business!
HISTORY
“William Wrigley Jr. came to Chicago from
Philadelphia in the spring of 1891. He was 29 years
old, had $32 in his pocket and the ambition to start
a business of his own. Besides unlimited
enthusiasm and energy, Mr. Wrigley had great talent as a
salesman. His father was a soap manufacturer, and as a boy, Mr.
Wrigley developed his salesmanship selling Wrigley's Scouring
Soap out of a basket in the streets of Philadelphia. In his early
GOVT R.C COLLEGE OF COMMERCE AND MANAGEMENT Page 9

teens he took a full time job as a soap salesman for his father,
driving a horse and wagon from town to town, calling on retail
stores.
At the start of his new business in Chicago, in April of 1891, Mr.
Wrigley sold Wrigley's Scouring Soap. As an extra incentive to
the merchants, Mr. Wrigley offered premiums. One of these
premiums was baking powder. When baking powder proved to be
more popular than soap, he switched to the baking powder
business. Then one day in 1892, Mr. Wrigley got the idea of
offering two packages of chewing gum with each can of baking
powder. The offer was a big success. Once again the premium -
chewing gum - seemed more promising than the product it was
supposed to promote.
At that time, there were at least a dozen chewing gum companies
in the United States, but the industry was relatively
undeveloped. Mr. Wrigley decided that chewing gum was the
product with the potential he had been looking for, so he began
marketing it under his own name. His first two
brands were Lotta and Vassar.
Juicy Fruit gum came next in 1893, and Wrigley's Spearmint was
introduced later that same year. Getting a foothold in the
chewing gum business was not easy. Existing companies offered
GOVT R.C COLLEGE OF COMMERCE AND MANAGEMENT Page 10
ORGANIZATION STUDY AT WRIGLEY INDIA PVT L.T.D
products that were then better known than Wrigley brands. In
1899, the six largest companies merged to form what was known
as "the chewing gum trust," and this combination meant very
serious competition for the developing Wrigley business. (Mr.
Wrigley was offered a chance to join the trust, but he chose to go
his own way.) Several times the young company was on the verge
of going under but finally resist to the trust hegemony."
Mr. Wrigley continued the use of premiums to encourage
merchants to stock his products. He knew that his customers
would be more likely to carry Wrigley's chewing gum if they
received a little "something for nothing." Mr. Wrigley expanded
his premium offers to include items ranging from lamps to razors
to scales. These offers grew to be so successful that he published
premium catalogs to assist his customers in their selection.
Mr. Wrigley also experimented with the idea of using advertising
to encourage more people to buy Wrigley's gum. He was one of
the pioneers in the use of advertising to promote the sale of
branded merchandise. He saw that consumer acceptance of
Wrigley's gum could be built faster by telling people about the
benefits of the product through newspaper and magazine ads,
outdoor posters and other forms of advertising. Then, as more
and more consumers began to ask for and buy Wrigley's chewing
GOVT R.C COLLEGE OF COMMERCE AND MANAGEMENT Page 11
ORGANIZATION STUDY AT WRIGLEY INDIA PVT L.T.D
gum in the stores, the storekeeper would naturally want to keep
a sufficient stock of Wrigley brands on hand.
This idea was put to the test when Mr. Wrigley decided to
concentrate on popularizing a spearmint-flavored gum, which he
believed to be a superior product - the now famous Wrigley's
Spearmint. Because this brand was a slow seller at first, in1906,
Mr. Wrigley decided to advertise the gum on a modest scale in
the three eastern cities of Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse. The
results were promising.
The company was also rapidly becoming an international
business. Through exports to many countries, Wrigley brands
became known the world over. The first factories established
outside the United States were in Canada (1910), Australia
(1915), Great Britain (1927) and New Zealand (1939). Different
preferences in the international markets led to new types of
products and flavors. Perhaps the most successful product for
the Wrigley Company outside the United States is the pellet-
shaped chewing gum most often sold under the "P.K" brand
name.
During World War II, Philip Wrigley, son of the founder and then
president, led the company in an unusual move to protect the
reputation of its brands. Because of war conditions, supplies of
GOVT R.C COLLEGE OF COMMERCE AND MANAGEMENT Page 12
ORGANIZATION STUDY AT WRIGLEY INDIA PVT L.T.D
top-grade ingredients became limited. At the same time, the
demand for chewing gum increased. Large quantities were
supplied to the Armed Forces, since gum helped ease tension,
promote alertness and improve morale among the fighting men.
The company could not make enough top-quality gum to meet
everyone's needs. So rather than change the high quality that
people expected in these brands, the company took Wrigley's
Spearmint, Doublemint and Juicy Fruit off the civilian market. By
1944, the entire output of these brands was directed to the U.S.
Armed Forces overseas.
For civilians, the company developed a wartime brand. The
company told the public honestly that this product, though pure
and wholesome, was not quite good enough to carry a standard
Wrigley label. Soon after that, top-grade materials became so
scarce that pre-war quality gum could not be produced even for
the Armed Forces. So the company completely stopped making
its established brands, and the special wartime brand was
supplied to the Armed Forces. Meanwhile, a unique advertising
campaign continued to keep the name and quality of Wrigley's
gum in consumers' minds, even though they couldn't buy it.
Dramatic ads featured a picture of an empty Wrigley's Spearmint
gum wrapper with the slogan "Remember This Wrapper".
GOVT R.C COLLEGE OF COMMERCE AND MANAGEMENT Page 13
ORGANIZATION STUDY AT WRIGLEY INDIA PVT L.T.D
After the war's end, the company was again able
to purchase the ingredients used in its established
brands. Wrigley's Spearmint came back on the
market in 1946. Juicy Fruit followed later that
same year, and Double mint reappeared in 1947.
Though these brands had not been sold in the
United States for two years, they quickly regained
and then exceeded their pre-war popularity. The
Wrigley Company then concentrated on expanding
its global market. In addition to the already
existing facilities in Chicago, Australia, Canada,
Great Britain and New Zealand, sales offices were
opened throughout Asia and Europe. To
accommodate the increasing demand for Wrigley
products,
Factories were built in the following locations: Manila Philippines (1965); Biesheim, France (1967); Salzburg, Austria (1968); Nairobi, Kenya (1971); and Taipei, Taiwan (1978).
To meet changing consumer tastes, the Wrigley Company introduced non-tack Freedent gum, Big Red cinnamon gum and Hubba Bubba bubble gum in the mid-1970s. Responding to the demand for a good-tasting sugarfree product, the Wrigley Company introduced Extra sugarfree chewing gum in 1984. Today Wrigley brands of chewing gum are enjoyed in over 100 countries throughout the world, and the Wrigley Company is the recognized leader in its field.”

About Gum
Spruce trees.
People worldwide have chewed on natural materials
for hundreds of years. Some of these materials
include thickened resin and latex from certain types
of trees, various sweet grasses, leaves, grains and
waxes. The ancient Greeks chewed mastic gum (or
mastiche, pronounced "mas-tee-ka") for centuries. This
substance is formed from the resin contained in the bark of the
mastic tree found mainly in Greece and Turkey.
Grecian women favored chewing mastic gum to
clean their teeth and sweeten their breath.
The Indians of New England taught American colonists to quench their thirsts by
chewing the gum-like resin that forms on spruce trees when its bark is cut. In the
early 1800's, lumps of this spruce gum were sold in the eastern United States,
making it America's first commercial chewing gum. Sweetened paraffin wax
became an acceptable alternative around 1850 and eventually surpassed spruce
gum in popularity.
Gum, derived from the sapodilla tree, was
brought to the U.S. in the 1860s, and inspired
the gum we know today.
GOVT R.C COLLEGE OF COMMERCE AND MANAGEMENT Page 15
ORGANIZATION STUDY AT WRIGLEY INDIA PVT L.T.D
Modern gum products evolved from a chicle-based gum brought
to the United States in the early 1860s. Chicle is derived from
the milky juice (latex) of the sapodilla tree that grows in tropical
rain forests of Central America. This tree is found mainly in the
areas of Mexico, Guatemala and Belize, which lie within the
Yucatan Peninsula.
Due to the increased popularity of these products, the demand
for chicle rose quickly. But, as chicle-suppliers soon realized,
their ability to supply chicle was limited by the trees from which
it was derived. The trees needed an average of four to eight
years of rest between tappings. When chicle-bearing trees of
Central America could not keep up with demand, manufacturers
turned to synthetic gum bases to continue their business.
Paraffin, originally discovered in 1830, was an option as it is
colorless, odorless, tasteless and plentiful, but
others kept searching for a better material. An
Ohio dentist used rubber to create a gum product for jaw
exercise and gum stimulation. William F. Semple was honored
for this work with the first patent to manufacture chewing gum
in December 1869.
Today, gum base is made of man-made latex and divided into two
major categories, chewing and bubble gum, with the latter
having more elasticity. In recent years, nonstick gum bases for
chewing and bubble gums have been formulated to satisfy the
chewing needs of more consumers.

RECENT CHANGES IN GUM
In June 1974, a Marsh supermarket in Troy, Ohio installed the
first code scanning equipment. The first product to be scanned
using a UPC bar code was a 10 pack of Wrigley's Juicy Fruit gum.
This pack of gum is now on display at the Smithsonian
Institution's National Museum of American History.
In some countries, xylitol is used to sweeten gum, instead
of aspartame. By avoiding sugar, the chance of tooth decay is
lowered, since the sugar otherwise used may turn into acid after
chewing the gum. It is also claimed that in chewing, it may help
to remove food residues. Xylitol based products are allowed by
the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to make the medical
claim that they do not promote dental cavities

ALTOIDS
Altoids, the Original Celebrated Curiously Strong Mints, were first produced in England at the turn of the 19th century during the reign of King George III. Smith & Co. BENEFITS OF CHEWING
You love to chew gum because it tastes great and helps freshen your breath, but
did you know there may be additional benefits to chewing gum. More than two
decades of research and consumer outreach have driven Wrigley's leadership in
oral care with consumers and within the professional and scientific community. In
fact, according to some of that research, chewing sugar-free gum for 20 minutes
after eating or drinking can help protect your teeth. Because of studies like this,
GOVT R.C COLLEGE OF COMMERCE AND MANAGEMENT Page 34
ORGANIZATION STUDY AT WRIGLEY INDIA PVT L.T.D
more and more consumers and dental professionals around the world are
remembering to “Eat.Drink.Chew.” to help practice good oral
health, especially when on-the-go.
In addition to the well-known oral care benefits, sugar-free gum can provide a way
to help manage your calories. Even small decreases in calories, according to
experts, can have a big impact in the long-term, so chewing a five calorie stick of
sugar-free gum instead of reaching for high-calorie snacks could be an effective
way to help you reduce calorie intake.

Gum Base
Gum base puts the "chew" from chewing gum, binding all the ingredients together for a smooth, soft texture. The Wrigley Company uses synthetic gum base materials that provide longer-lasting flavor, improved texture and reduced tackiness.
Sweeteners
The finest grades of pure powdered cane sugar, beet sugar and corn syrup are used from the production of Wrigley's sugar-sweetened chewing gums.
Several types of high-intensity sweeteners are used from Wrigley’s sugarfree products and as flavor enhancers from some other brands. These artificial sweeteners deliver long-lasting, noncaloric taste and do not promote tooth-decay.
Flavorings and Colorings
The most popular flavors for chewing gums come from the mint plant. Mint flavoring for Wrigley’s chewing gums is extracted from fresh mint plants grown on farms from the United States. After the plants are harvested, they go through a distillation process that extracts the oils used for flavoring Wrigley brands. Other Wrigley brands are flavored by a variety of fruit and spice essences. Colorings are used to distinguish different flavors.
The Wrigley Company manufactures chewing and bubble
gums with long lasting flavour and consistent, high quality.
This includes manufacturing our gum in spotless, air-
conditioned rooms and sampling all ingredients before
accepting them into any of Wrigley's manufacturing facilities.

After raw ingredients are approved as meeting our quality
standards, the first stage of production begins.
Gum Base mixing In this process the machine to take 2.1/2 hours mixing the sugar powder ,sugar free powder , liquid bluecose and flavors color items. In Wrigley having 2 big machines for mixing the gum base items.
melting
In this process The making of Wrigley's gum begins by melting and purifying the gum base. Mixing The melted base is poured into a mixer that can hold up to one tonne of ingredients. Sweeteners and flavours are added at just the right moment and in just the right amounts and then slowly mixed.
GOVT R.C COLLEGE OF COMMERCE AND MANAGEMENT Page 56
ORGANIZATION STUDY AT WRIGLEY INDIA PVT L.T.D
Rolling
From the mixers, a large "loaf" of gum is sent through a series
of rollers that form it into a thin, wide ribbon. Each pair of
rollers is set closer together than the previous pair, gradually
reducing the thickness of the gum. A light coating of finely
powdered sugar or sugar substitute is added during this
process to keep the gum from sticking and to enhance flavour.
Sheeting in this process after the rolling process next
move to gum through sheeting means to produces a sticks .
At the end of the rolling process, the continuous ribbon of
gum is then cut into a pattern for sticks, short thicker tabs,
long rolled strips or small rectangular gum centers,

ORGANIZATION STUDY AT WRIGLEY INDIA PVT L.T.D
depending on what type of gum is being made.
Cooling and temping in this process after sheeting the sticks put in cooling room 4 hours and temping room 12hours . The scored gum is then moved to a temperature-controlled environment to cool and ensure the finished gum will have the right consistency and stay fresh on store shelves

coating After tempering, the gum centers are broken into
individual pieces. The pieces are then fed to a spray drier
that forms the crunchy coating around the gum center. It
tumbles the pieces while a prepared syrup mixture, made of
filtered water, sweeteners, and colouring is sprayed onto
the gum. This combination of tumbling and spray coating
forms a candy shell around the
soft gum centers.
in this process the Wrigley having 3 machines and that machines takes 51/2 hours for loading and unloading the sticks
Wrapping
After cooling and tempering, skilled operators break the
sheets of sticks up into sections and feed them into the
wrapping machine. In one continuous process, the wrapping
machine receives and wraps the sticks, in some cases applying
an outer wrapper and seals the ends of the package.
GOVT R.C COLLEGE OF COMMERCE AND MANAGEMENT Page 59
ORGANIZATION STUDY AT WRIGLEY INDIA PVT L.T.D
Packaging this is the last process
Pellet-style gum is principally packaged by two
methods. One is to place the pellets into the
formed plastic compartments of a blister pack.
The package is heat sealed with a foil backing,
and inserted into a cardboard sleeve. The
second method is to line up ten pellets in a row,
wrap in traditional packaging and seal both
ends to ensure freshness. For Wrigley's HUBBA BUBBA®
Tape, a ribbon of gum is rolled up and placed in a plastic
clamshell-like package.

Packaging, Innovation & SourcingPackaging is a high-profile component of a consumer’s experience – it enables the safe transportation of our product, identifies our brands and provides consumers with important information. However, packaging also uses material, and we need to find solutions that allow us to deliver our product while lowering the impact of those materials on the environment. A critical first step has been the recent implementation of an
