At a time of giving...

Organise an auction at your team Christmas lunch

An auction guide in conjunction with

1

Use your Christmas lunch to raise money and help young people experiencing homelessness.

An auction is an easy and fun way to fundraise and make a difference. Ask your friends and colleagues to submit lots and auction them off between courses or after lunch. All the money raised will go towards providing safe and affordable accommodation for vulnerable young people, helping them to reach their potential.

Christmas is a time to be spent with loved ones and family, but some of the young people that LandAid’s charity partners support do not have the option to spend it with their family.

Relationship breakdown is the biggest cause of youth homelessness, with thousands of young people leaving home because they feel unable to stay there, being forced out by families who disagree with their sexuality or for some there simply not being enough room for them any longer. For so many young people Christmas will be a lonely time.

Step by Step guide

Before the event: 1. Source your auction lots – ask your colleagues and employees if they have anything

they could donate. There are no rules on what to include – anything you think

people will want to buy! See page 2 for a list of example auction lots

2. Find a volunteer to be your auctioneer on the day. They should be someone

enthusiastic, confident and a good salesperson!

3. Prepare your auction brochure for the event so guests can see what enticing lots are

on offer

4. Prepare vouchers for lot winners if necessary

On the day: 1. Make sure you have all lots and vouchers ready

2. Brief your auctioneer on the items up for grabs

3. Make sure your volunteer is ready and prepared

After the event:1. Follow up with auction lot winners to take payment

2. Provide winners with details on how to claim their lot

3. Make your donation to LandAid!

Do Write a lot description and make any terms and conditions clear - this avoid any future confusions with the lucky winner

Do Write lot descriptions that really sell the item – make it sound exciting!

Do Add one or two images of the items if possible. It always helps if people can see what they are buying!

Don’t Forget to say thank you!

Do’s and Don’ts

Top tips from Allsop auctioneer, Duncan Moir:

1.Offerthesmalllotsfirst

2. Make the opening bid at an attractive price

3. Keep the increments low and momentum high

4. Try to generate competition between two bidders at a time

5. Never insult the bidder

6. VERY IMPORTANT: Always make sure the bidder knows he’s bidding

Suggested LotsHolidays

Sports tickets

Do you have a holiday home or accommodation you offer for a week or two holiday?

Do you have a season ticket to your football club or access to other sporting events? Why not choose a fixture you can’t attend and put the tickets up for grabs!

Event tickets Do you have any contacts who can get their hands on tickets to upcoming events? For example, tickets to the theatre or an art exhibition.

MemorabiliaAny collectables or signed items lying around at home that you don’t want but someone else will? Or perhaps you have a contact who could arrange for something to be signed e.g. a signed football or sports shirt.

Experiences

Tasks

Perhaps you could set up masterclass, workshop or activity - be creative!

You could bid on getting a senior partner to wash your car or walk your dog - these are fun and it’s likely the Senior Partner will bid to get out of it!

For example

A weekend in a pretty Grade IIListed three-bed cottage in Chichester

A week in a Cote D’azur four-bed house with pool, terrace and private garden in St Paul de Vence, South of France (car not included)
