Organic Chemistry
Synthesis of Organic Compounds
Learning GoalsStudents will:• Understand that organic compounds can be
synthesized in the lab using chemical reactions that they have learned.
• Apply their knowledge of Organic Reactions• Understand that the synthesis of organic
compounds often requires a series of reactions (see flow chart on the next slide)
Success CriteriaStudents will be able to:• apply the correct organic reaction at each step• Use the organic reaction flow chart to choose the
correct synthesis path• Understand the condition under which reaction
occurs (catalysts, heat, pressure, etc.)
The Organic Chemistry Lab
• Lab Equipment• Chemicals• Catalysts• Safety Materials• Fume Hood
Supplies for our Organic Chemistry
LabOur lab contains the following Chemicals:• Any alkene or alkane you wish• Ammonia (NH3)
• Oxidizers (ex. KMnO4, Cr2O72-)
• Halogens (ex. Br2) or Hydrohalogens (HBr)
• Catalysts (conc. H2SO4, FeCl3, Pt, etc.)
• Sources of heat and pressure• Separation and purification
equipment
Prepare ethyl pentanoate from a
primary alcohol and ethene. O
O
ethyl pentanoate
Prepare 1-aminopropane
(propanamine), a primary amine, from
propane and ammonia.
H2N
propanamine
Prepare a tertiary amine starting with
alkenes and ammonia.
N
N,N-diethylbutanamine
Try these:pentanoic acid
N-methyl aminobutane
Synthesize all of these compounds using the simple compounds found in our lab
N-ethyl-N-propyl ethanamide
Hexyl ethanoate
