Organelles

Cell Wall

Functions:

-protects and supports plant cells

-prevents water loss

-made of cellulose

Location: outer layer of plant cells

Factory = exterior walls, sub floor and roof

Body = not in animal cells

Cell MembraneFunctions:

-protects the cell, barrier

-controls materials that go in and out of the cell

Location: around the cell

Factory = ceiling, floor, doors and windows

Body = our skin with pores

CytoskeletonFunctions:

-support structure of cell

-prevents cell collapse

-aids in movement

-made of Microtubules (thin hollow) & Microfilaments (thin solid) network

Location: Inside the cell

Factory = interior walls, poles…

Body = our bones

CYTOSKELETON

Functions:-control center-largest organelleLocation: inside the cell, near the center

Factory = Main boss’s officeBody = our brain

Nucleus

Nucleolus (Nucleoli)Function:-makes ribosomesLocation: inside the nucleus (dark spot)

Factory = CEO or boss manBody = cerebrum of the brain

Nuclear MembraneProtects nucleusLets things in/out of nucleus (pores)Location: around nucleus

RiobosomesFunction:

-makes proteins

-float free or attached

-smallest & most numerous

Location: in cytoplasm or

attached to E.R.

Factory = secretary, memos, gophers

Body = nerves of the nervous system

Endoplasmic Reticulum (E.R.)Function:-series of folded membranes

-makes & transports proteins

-two types: smooth & rough (w/ ribosomes)

Location: attaches from cell membrane to nuclear

membrane

Factory = machines that make

a product

Body = stomach

MitochondriaFunctions:

-makes energy/powerhouse

-has a double membrane

-turns sugar to ATP

Location: in cytoplasm

Factory = electric power,

generator

Body = lungs & heart

Mitochondria

Functions:-smooth folded membrane packages proteins and secretes waste Location: in cytoplasm

Factory = packaging part of assembly lineBody = lg. & sm. intestines

Golgi complex (or apparatus)

Golgi Apparatus

ChloroplastsFunctions:

-traps sun’s energy and

makes food (photosynthesis)

-full of chlorophyll

Location: in plant cells

Factory = vending machine

Body = we don’t have

Lysosomes

Functions:

Contains digestive enzymes

Destroys bacteria, old cell parts…

Location: in cytoplasm

Factory = inspectors, janitors

Body = liver & kidneys

Functions:-stores food and water-has digestive enzymes-plants have a large one usuallyLocation: in cytoplasm

Factory = warehouse of goods Body = kidneys

Vacuoles

Few Extra Cell Structures

Cytoplasm

Gel-like substances, holds all

organelles in cell

Location: in cell

Centrioles

-Helps the cell to divide

Location: in cytoplasm
