Ordination Anniversaries

The month of May marks the ordination anniversaries of all of our beloved priests:

Fr. Tom Bishop—May 14—43 years

Fr. Matt Jamesson—May 17—4 years

Fr. Michael Wanda—May 18—27 years

Fr. Tim Fairman—May 21—30 years

Join us in thanking them for their many years of ministry…

Let's remember the sacrifices of those who have served to preserve our country's freedom both in the present and in the past.

We will celebrate a Memorial Mass at 9:00 AM on Monday, May 28th.

There will be Gold Stars to write a name of a loved one who has lost their life serving our country and they will be remembered at Mass.

A Message from Our Pastor, Fr. Tim Fairman

Dear Friends,

30 years… three decades. That’s a long time! On Monday, May 21st five of my classmates and I will celebrate our 30th anniversary as priests in the Archdiocese of Chicago. I remember when I was a young priest I would look at the list of priests celebrating their 25th anniversaries and I would think, “Jeez, those guys are old!” Now I’ve zoomed past them to 30!

Milestones often invite introspection, so as I look back on 30 years of ordained ministry, it is an opportunity to recognize all I have to be grateful for in my life. I am truly blessed and have had a wonderful life as a priest. One of the questions I receive regularly is “When did you decide to become a priest?” That is a fair question without an easy answer. As we celebrate the great feast of Pentecost this weekend I am reminded that the Holy Spirit has been guiding me to the priesthood since I was a young boy, though I wasn’t always wise enough to recognize the signs along the way.

Growing up on the West Side of Chicago at Our Lady Help of Christians Parish was a fabulous experience. Mom and Dad were tremendously active in the parish and HOC was our home, in every sense of the word. We frequently had priests, deacons and BVM nuns to the house for dinner and when Dad broke both of his feet in a fall off of a ladder; the people of HOC came through in ways to help my family that I will never forget. The seeds of a vocation to priesthood were indeed planted early in my life.

When I was in 8th grade, two vocation directors from the Augustinian community came to my school to promote their seminary high school in Holland, Michigan. I was enthralled with their presentation and asked my parents if I could go there. God love Dad and Mom, they probably knew better than to say yes, but they were always so good about supporting the desires of my brothers and me that they didn’t stand in the way of my request. I only lasted a semester there because I got incredibly homesick (as I’m sure my parents knew I would), but I was impressed enough with the seminary that I decided to continue my journey at the Archdiocesan high school seminary, Quigley North.

Upon completion of my high school years, I was confronted with where (and if) I wanted to go to college. I couldn’t discount the possibility of priesthood, so I entered Niles College Seminary of Loyola University. The formational part of my college education was… formative! I spent one summer as a hospital chaplain and another as pastoral minister at St. Bartholomew Parish in Waukegan, under the guidance of one of the most joyful priests I have ever met, Fr. Bill Zavaski. Those experiences helped me to realize that I still could not discount priesthood in my future, so I continued my education and formation at Mundelein Seminary.

I loved my years at the seminary and learned so much! And I caught a ten pound bass in the lake there! Formationally, each summer I engaged in ministerial opportunities that only confirmed my journey to priesthood and it was with great joy that I was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago by Cardinal Bernardin on a bright and sunny day on May 21st, 1988. I cannot express the joy of blessing my parents, brothers, other family members and friends in the courtyard of Holy Name Cathedral after the Mass had concluded.

The Holy Spirit led me to that day of ordination and it has guided me since.

I have been an associate pastor at Our Lady of Humility in Zion from 1988-1996, an associate pastor at St. James in Arlington Heights from 1996-2002, a pastor at St. Bede in Ingleside from 2002-2013 and have been pastor here at St. Theresa since 2013.

Each of my assignments as a priest has been an incredible blessing, and I would not be the person I am today without the guidance, wisdom and kindness of the people I have served in each parish. When I look back on how I was assigned to each parish, none of them happened in a way I would have expected but in hindsight, each of them has been a tremendous grace in my life. I absolutely believe the Holy Spirit has guided me to each of my parish homes.

Continued from previous page... Serving under three Archbishops of Chicago has been unique. Cardinal Bernardin, a holy and kind man, seemed to be very much an introvert. I really didn’t have the opportunity to know him. Cardinal George is one of my heroes. He was incredibly smart (in fact I was always nervous talking to him!) but he had a pastoral side to him that was very endearing. He made an effort to know his priests and from my perspective was a strong, convicted, faithful Archbishop at a time the Church needed that kind of leader. I aspire to be like him in many ways. I have come to know Cardinal Cupich through my ministry on the Priest Placement Board and Presbyteral Council. He has great compassion and passion. His leadership through Renew My Church has been inspirational. He definitely needs our prayers as he leads us through charting a course for the future of this local church. What have I learned in 30 years of priesthood? I could write a book about that, but here are a few thoughts as I sit here composing this reflection:

• The Catholic Church, like any other institution, can be very political. I learned as a political science/history major in college that politics is unavoidable in life. I should not have been surprised that the Church has a political side to it, but I was.

• Every parish is made up of very good people. Seems like a simple truth, but that realization helped me to transition from one parish to the other confident that I would be at home wherever life’s travels took me.

• I must like Vicariate I! I have been in this Vicariate (which makes up the parishes of Lake and Northwest Cook Counties) since I graduated from college seminary. Not always on purpose, but this is where the Spirit has led me. We have been blessed with excellent bishop vicars as well, among them Bishops Goedert, Kicanas, Listecki and now Bishop Rassas for many years.

• I loved being an associate pastor and I especially loved telling people that if a decision needed to be made they should address it with the pastor! :)

• I learned so much from my two pastors and the people were very warmhearted and helpful to me. • I never thought I would know when I was ready to be a pastor, but after my fifth year at St. James, I felt called to apply for a

pastorate. • People in parishes are incredibly forgiving. Not knowing a thing about being a pastor, the people of St. Bede were very kind to me

as I learned the ropes. I’ll never forget my first Finance Council meeting without the business manager. I foolishly believed I could answer all of their questions. After the third “I don’t know” and shrug of my shoulders, I told the group we would no longer have meetings without the business manager!

• After leading construction projects at two parishes, I think I know more about VCT, TaraFlex flooring, soffits and HVAC systems then I do about the Holy Trinity! I’m kidding…. kinda.

• I am amazed at how much my ministry involves sitting in front of a computer monitor. When I was newly ordained, there was no internet, so people stopped in for a visit or spoke on the phone. Now, no one uses a phone but I sift through about 50-75 emails a day.

• Parishioners may not always realize this, but people who work in pastoral ministry do incredible work and are completely dedicated to the people they serve.

• I cannot describe how happy I have been living with the priests of St. Theresa. Fr. Matt, Fr. Tom, the late Fr. Ron and now Fr. Michael have brought me more joy than they probably know. Our seminarian, Rob Ryan, has also been a lot of fun to get to know when he stays with us during breaks.

• I love being a priest. Now more than ever. I wrestled with whether or not to celebrate this anniversary, but as one of my spiritual directors (and Fr. Ron) once told me, anniversaries are a reminder to people of what a wonderful vocation priesthood is, so I conclude by asking you to pray for an increase in vocations to the priesthood and religious life. I would not have traded these last thirty years for anything and look forward to serving all of you in the years to come! Ad multos annos!

Sunday Rosary 12:30 p.m. St. Theresa Day Chapel

During the month of May, we honor Mary, the Mother of Jesus. One of the most beautiful ways to honor Mary is by praying the Rosary, which she herself gave to us and asks us to pray. The Rosary is one of the oldest and most cherished forms of prayer in the Catholic Church, recalling the events of Christ’s life through contemplation of the Mysteries surrounding it.

When was the last time you prayed the Rosary? Did you stop saying it years ago because you thought it was boring? Have you forgotten how to do it or perhaps you never learned? Would you like to revisit the Rosary and pass along this form of prayer to your children and grandchildren? If so, the Knights of Columbus is inviting you to join us. Whether you haven’t said the Rosary in years and would like to be reintroduced to this peaceful form of prayer, or you pray the Rosary regularly, please come and be inspired!

Since its founding in 1882, the Knights of Columbus has been involved in evangelization and to guide Catholics in fulfilling their mission to proclaim the faith and call people to the Gospel of Life. Questions call Pierre Zermatten at 847.323.0914 or [email protected].

Please be mindful to provide food products that are still within their freshness date and not expired; check the date. We are truly blessed to have such generous donors. May God Bless you, and the parishioners of Holy Family Church for their generosity as well as the pantry stewards who are kind, compassionate and feed the hungry.
