September Speaker Brandon Tam “The Huntington Orchid Collection” Brandon Tam has been growing orchids since the age of seven, starting with a white flowering Cymbidium his grand- mother gave to him. She has been the source of his inspiration to further his stud- ies within the botanical world and pursue a career within that field. She would bring him to their local nursery where she would let him pick a plant each time they went. Over time, not only did his orchid collec- tion grow, but his knowledge in that field did as well. At the age of 14, he began volunteering at The Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens where he helped out among the different areas of the institution. From tending to the plants of the Conser- vatory to database entry of pressed speci- mens in the Herbarium, there were always plenty of opportunities to quench his thirst for plant knowledge. When Brandon turned 16, he graduated from high school and began attending college. During the next four years, Brandon had earned his Bachelor of Science in Plant Science at the California State University, Pomona, by the age of 21. A few months after graduating high school at the age of 16, the Director of the Botanical Gardens at The Huntington offered Brandon an internship within the Orchid Department to reorganize and perpetuate the collection. Brandon has been with the institution over eight years in total, but over five years with the Orchid Collection specifically. Currently, at the age of 22, Brandon is the Orchid Collection Specialist, focusing mostly in Paphiopedilums since a large chunk of the collection at The Huntington consists of that specific genus. Overseeing one of the United States’ larg- est Orchid Collections of 16,000 plants is no easy task, but Brandon manages to get it done. From hybridizing new plants to the propagation of rare and endangered spe- cies, it is a high priority for The Hunting- ton to further the advancements of plants within the orchid world. At the moment, Brandon is working on the conservation aspect of the collection while acquiring and adding more rare orchids to The Huntington’s fast growing collection. Our own Tina Coombe had some beauti- ful photographs on display and Ha put together a beautiful orchid display. With the profits from this show and the Febru- ary expo, we are able to invite exciting speakers to our monthly society meetings. In August, we had Phyllis Prestia, a NHOS member, present an entertaining slideshow and talk on her trek through the rainforests in Madagascar and the World Orchid Conference in Johannesburg. Nancy Benay was in attendance (looking great after her hip surgery!) and added some fun tidbits about the trip, too! This month, First Vice President Alex Al- len has booked Brandon Tam from Hunt- ington Library, Art Collections and Bo- tanical Gardens. We are excited to have Brandon, another NHOS member, speak on his experiences with his vast orchid collection at the Huntington. Be sure to check out his impressive bio! The Orchid Expo planning committee is already in full swing. The theme this year is “Many Faces of Orchids.” We will have more information coming, but be sure to mark your calendar for February 12-14, 2016. If you are interested in helping out in the planning, we are always happy to have extra help and fresh ideas! Plus, we always have GREAT food and lots of FUN! Brandon Tam “The Huntington Orchid Collection”

Brandon Tam has been growing orchids

since the age of seven, starting with a

Greenhouse & Garden Tour

Join your fellow Orchidistas for a Greenhouse and Garden Tour on

Saturday, October 10th. Lunch will be at Sherman Library and Gardens

in Corona del Mar with a behind-the-scenes tour of the Greenhouse, Conservatory and orchid collection.

Down the road, Brandon plans to travel

the world orchid hunting on behalf of

The Huntington Botanical Gardens.

Along with being the Orchid Collection

Specialist, he is also the keeper of the

Amorphophallus titanum collection,

better known as the Corpse Flower. He

manages and oversees 50 titanums

alongside with The Orchid Collection in

the greenhouse and has successfully

bloomed one flower during his tenure

there in August of 2014.

paid your dues. We still have a few left

and if we work diligently, the roster will

be ready in September. If any questions,

Also, I have had some requests for new

name badges, especially for the Hunting-

ton Show offering free admission to

their big event in October. If you can’t

find your badge and want a replacement,

please let me know right away. We en-

courage everyone to wear their badges at

all NHOS meetings by giving an extra

raffle ticket when you where them. Re-

placements are $6.00. Please let me

Member update: I have talked with Bill

Fogarty only to find he has been very ill

with pneumonia. Happy to report he is

doing well and working on building up

Newsletter Editor

Approximately 1-2 hours a

month. Responsibilities include gathering articles, reviewing for typos and content from the president, membership, speaker information, culture class, photos, future events.

All the information will be forwarded to our newsletter designer who completes the layout.

Silent Auction Support

Approximately 30-60 minutes per month. Responsibilities in-

clude gathering monies from

silent auction winners at NHOS monthly meetings and giving the total sales to the treasurer for money distribution.

2016 NHOS Spring Orchid Expo:

”The Many Faces of Orchids”

Please mark your calendars for February 13, 14, and 15, as these

are the dates of the 2016 NHOS

Spring Orchid Expo: ”The Many Faces of Orchids.”

It will again be at Westminster Mall (in the Macy’s wing) in Westmin-ster, Orange County, CA. Plans are already underway, and the committee is working hard to

make the Expo even better in 2016. Check out our NHOS website, newly redesigned by NHOS member George Allen, at www.nhosinfo.org.

More information about the Expo will be available there each month.

The NHOS Summer 2015 Exotic

Plant and Orchid Festival was a

huge success. Thanks to the hard work of the Fes-tival Committee and all the many people who volunteered to work at the festival. Thank you also to our

many regular vendors and some new ones. This year we invited sev-eral nurseries to join us and hope they liked being a part of our festi-val. Again thank you to our many vol-
