September Speaker
Brandon Tam “The Huntington Orchid Collection”
Brandon Tam has been growing orchids
since the age of seven, starting with a
white flowering Cymbidium his grand-
mother gave to him. She has been the
source of his inspiration to further his stud-
ies within the botanical world and pursue a
career within that field. She would bring
him to their local nursery where she would
let him pick a plant each time they went.
Over time, not only did his orchid collec-
tion grow, but his knowledge in that field
did as well. At the age of 14, he began
volunteering at The Huntington Library,
Art Collections and Botanical Gardens
where he helped out among the different
areas of the institution.
From tending to the plants of the Conser-
vatory to database entry of pressed speci-
mens in the Herbarium, there were always
plenty of opportunities to quench his thirst
for plant knowledge. When Brandon
turned 16, he graduated from high school
and began attending college.
During the next four years, Brandon had
earned his Bachelor of Science in Plant
Science at the California State University,
Pomona, by the age of 21. A few months
after graduating high school at the age of
16, the Director of the Botanical Gardens
at The Huntington offered Brandon an
internship within the Orchid Department to
reorganize and perpetuate the collection.
Brandon has been with the institution over
eight years in total, but over five years
with the Orchid Collection specifically.
Currently, at the age of 22, Brandon is the
Orchid Collection Specialist, focusing
mostly in Paphiopedilums since a large
chunk of the collection at The Huntington
consists of that specific genus.
Overseeing one of the United States’ larg-
est Orchid Collections of 16,000 plants is
no easy task, but Brandon manages to get
it done. From hybridizing new plants to the
propagation of rare and endangered spe-
cies, it is a high priority for The Hunting-
ton to further the advancements of plants
within the orchid world.
At the moment, Brandon is working on the
conservation aspect of the collection while
acquiring and adding more rare orchids to
The Huntington’s fast growing collection.
He stays active in the orchid world by be-
ing a member of seven different orchid
societies located all over Southern

Meetings are held on the
third Tuesday of each month
Culture Class at 7:00 p.m.
General Meeting at 7:45 p.m.
The Exotic Plant and Orchid Festival was
a great success! Thank you to all the vol-
unteers who helped support the event and
BIG thanks to Ha Bui and Richard Hara
for heading up the committee. There were
also beautiful bonsai displays, floral ar-
rangements, orchid displays, paintings and
photos.
Our own Tina Coombe had some beauti-
ful photographs on display and Ha put
together a beautiful orchid display. With
the profits from this show and the Febru-
ary expo, we are able to invite exciting
speakers to our monthly society meetings.
In August, we had Phyllis Prestia, a
NHOS member, present an entertaining
slideshow and talk on her trek through the
rainforests in Madagascar and the World
Orchid Conference in Johannesburg.
Nancy Benay was in attendance (looking
great after her hip surgery!) and added
some fun tidbits about the trip, too!
This month, First Vice President Alex Al-
len has booked Brandon Tam from Hunt-
ington Library, Art Collections and Bo-
tanical Gardens. We are excited to have
Brandon, another NHOS member, speak
on his experiences with his vast orchid
collection at the Huntington. Be sure to
check out his impressive bio!
The Orchid Expo planning committee is
already in full swing. The theme this year
is “Many Faces of Orchids.” We will have
more information coming, but be sure to
mark your calendar for February 12-14,
2016. If you are interested in helping out
in the planning, we are always happy to
have extra help and fresh ideas! Plus, we
always have GREAT food and lots of
FUN!
Keep cool and see you on September 15th,

be ready in September. If any questions,
my email is [email protected].
Also, I have had some requests for new
name badges, especially for the Hunting-
ton Show offering free admission to
their big event in October. If you can’t
find your badge and want a replacement,

courage everyone to wear their badges at
all NHOS meetings by giving an extra
raffle ticket when you where them. Re-
placements are $6.00. Please let me
know ASAP: [email protected].

The NHOS Summer 2015 Exotic
Plant and Orchid Festival was a
huge success. Thanks to the hard work of the Fes-tival Committee and all the many people who volunteered to work at the festival. Thank you also to our
many regular vendors and some new ones. This year we invited sev-eral nurseries to join us and hope they liked being a part of our festi-val. Again thank you to our many vol-
unteers, vendors and everyone who attended the 2015 Exotic Plant and
